Battle

Jormungand has three attacks. Its normal attack is not too powerful, but Cold Stare deals damage and petrifies the target (and if the damage would KO the target the target is petrified and immediately shattered). Space-Time Vorpal affects the whole party and deals moderate damage. It is vulnerable to Slow, as well as all Breaks. Magic does not have much effect on Jormungand due to its high Magic Defense statistic.

Jormungand drops three to four slot equipment, one to four of them having abilities. It drops weapons with any of the status strikes and armor pieces with any of the status proofs, with Stonestrike and Stoneproof as fixed abilities.

Its equipment drops provide a 6% critical hit chance bonus instead of the usual 3% (this is relevant to weapons and armor pieces, but only to attacks that deal physical damage).

Strategy

While Jormungand is not immune to Armor Break, it will only work 10% of the time. A Frag Grenade or Auron's Banishing Blade Overdrive work 100% of the time (if successful), and so are more effective to break its Full Break resistance. Using Hastega to give the party more turns is also useful.

Etymology

The name hails from Norse mythology, in which Midgardsormr (Old Norse: Miðgarðsormr; also known as the World Serpent or Jörmungandr) was the middle child of Loki and a giantess named Angrboda. Odin threw it into the ocean that encircles Midgard and it eventually grew large enough to reach around the entire world and bite its own tail. It had been foreseen that on the day of Ragnarök it would battle with its arch-nemesis: Thor, the god of thunder. The sky would darken from the poison mist emitted by Midgardsormr, and the battle would end in the death of both. Thor would first kill Midgardsormr and then stagger nine steps before dying from its poison.
