Jachol Cave is an optional location in Final Fantasy V, accessible in both Bartz's world and the merged world, and in close proximity to the town of Jachol. Though the cave's end has no apparent purpose in Bartz's world, in the merged world, it leads to an entrance to the Castle of Bal, where Odin resides.

History[]

The Ancients set up many traps in Jachol Cave with skull switches to deactivate them and traverse the cave.[1][note 1]

Jachol Cave was a common excavation site for adventurers. Many traveled to Jachol to excavate the cave, and weapons sold in the town were ones that had been excavated in the cave. By the time Bartz Klauser and his party arrived, most had already been looted,[1] both by adventurers and potentially by Lone Wolf the Pickpocket.[note 2]

Geography[]

The entrance to Jachol Cave is located south on the western continent, and runs through several mountains. It is found along the path between Jachol that leads north up through the Library of the Ancients and to Karnak. The end of the cave in Bartz's world simply leads to an empty patch of land, but in the merged world, leads to the basement of the Castle of Bal.

The cave is filled with traps placed by the Ancients, and empty treasure chests that have already been looted, many of which connect to the traps placed.[1] At the end of the cave is a wall that can be climbed to leave, leading out either onto the overworld or the Castle of Bal basement.

Quests[]

The player can visit the cave in Bartz's world to fight enemies for AP, but otherwise, it is entirely skippable. At the end of the cave is a wall that the player character can climb. In Bartz's world, this only leads to a dead-end section on the overworld with no apparent purpose.

The main reason to travel to the cave is for Odin, later in the game. In the merged world, the wall climbed at the end of the cave leads to the other side of the locked door in the basement of Castle of Bal, where Odin can be challenged and obtained as a summon.

Annotations[]

  1. It is unclear if the Ancients who built the Library of the Ancients are connected to those who built the Ronka Ruins. The residents in Jachol are descendants of the Ronkans, and many describe their own civilization that collapsed 500 years before the events of Final Fantasy V.[1] The Sealed Temple, built by the Ancients,[2] has an area named the "Heart of Ronka" that greatly resembles the Ronka Ruins. Though the Library of the Ancients share the name "Ancient", the library predates this, as it predates the separation of the worlds which occurred 1,000 years before the events of Final Fantasy V.
  2. 2.0 2.1 If Lone Wolf the Pickpocket is let out of the dungeon in Walse Castle, the Blitz Whip treasure will disappear.
