Pyramid

Party member being Imprisoned.

Imprisoned is a recurring status effect in the Final Fantasy series.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy VII[]

Imprisoned is a status effect where a character is incapacitated by a special enemy attack. While imprisoned, they cannot take action until the enemy imprisoning them is defeated. Imprisoned characters are considered defeated and if all party members are Imprisoned, the game is over.

This status only occurs in three separate boss battles.

During the battle with Reno in Sector 7 Pillar, his Pyramid attack can imprison a character. Attacking the Pyramid destroys it. Freeing the character and destroying the pyramid wins AP.

During the battle with Bottomswell in Under Junon, the Waterpolo attack will imprison a character. While imprisoned by the Waterpolo, the affected's HP will trickle down as if they are being drowned. Damaging the Waterpolo with a magic attack will destroy it, freeing the character. It can also be countered by casting Regen on the imprisoned character, stopping the character's HP from dropping.

During the battle with Carry Armor, either Left Arm or Right Arm can imprison a character. When targeted, a character is picked up and held by one of the arms. During this state, damage inflicted on Carry Armor will reciprocate in damage inflicted on the imprisoned character(s). If an arm is destroyed, the character it was holding will be dropped. A held character that dies will also be dropped.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

While Imprisoned is not formally listed among the game's status effects, Pyramid returns as an attack of Reno. It traps the target, requiring the player to attack the Pyramid with other characters until it breaks.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth[]

While Imprisoned is not formally listed among the game's status effects, Water Cell returns as an attack of Terror of the Deep (how this game localizes Bottomswell's name). It traps the target and gradually depletes their HP. It can be broken using magic or (unlike in the original game) physical attacks, but the latter will require more hits.
