Icestorma is a magic ability for Lightning in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It is a compound ability that combines the Blizzara and Aerora spells, dealing magic ice and wind-elemental damage to multiple foes. It is the upgraded form of the Icestorm spell.

Obtained[]

Icestorma is one of the few magic abilities that does not have a garb exclusive version. It can only be obtained as a drop from the Aster Protoflorian enemies with a 22.5% drop rate. The enemies drop different levels of the ability on the following days and difficulties:

Enemy Lv. 1 Lv. 2 Lv. 3 Lv. 4 Lv. 5
Aster Protoflorian Day 7 - 9 (Easy/Normal) Day 10 - 13 (Easy/Normal) Day 1 - 6 (Hard) Day 7 - 12 (Hard) Day 13 (Hard)

Mechanics[]

When used, Lightning summons a small pillar of ice and a gale to strike the target, dealing five magic ice and wind-elemental attacks to all enemies within a small radius. By default, Icestorma Lv. 1 has an ATB cost of 40, an attack power of 0.25 (1.25 in total), a Stagger Power of B, and a Stagger Time of E. When fully upgraded, Icestorma Lv. 5 at max has an ATB cost of 25, an attack power of 1.35 (6.75 in total), a Stagger Power of B, and a Stagger Time of E.

The boss of the Wildlands main scenario is the only foe that uses Icestorma against Lightning. They will only perform the attack when under the effects of their Ravager stance.

Passives

Icestorma abilities can have the following passives:

Normal
  • Magic +150
  • Multiple Targets +20%
  • ATB Recovery +5
Rare
  • Multiple Targets +30% (Chaos variant drop)
  • Elemental Chaser (Synthesis only, 20%)

Use[]

Icestorma is useful when battling foes weak to both ice and wind-elemental magic damage. Due to its multi-hitting and elemental affinity, Icestorma can easily increase the stagger waves of multiple targets when cast in quick succession. The spell is best equipped onto garbs with high magic oriented stats and ATB amounts.

If players are fortunate enough to obtain the spell from Aster Protoflorians on the Wildlands' Rocky Crag road, they can take advantage of the spell when exploring the Temple of the Goddess and Eremite Plains regions of the zone, due to multiple foes within these locations being weak to either ice and wind oriented attacks. Players should prioritize using Icestorma and Blizzara/Aerora as their primary spells to increase stagger waves, while weaving in Blizzaga/Aeroga to stagger and possibly launch targets.

Etymology[]

An ice storm is a type of winter storm characterized by freezing rain, also known as a glaze event or, in some parts of the United States, as a silver thaw. The U.S. National Weather Service defines an ice storm as a storm which results in the accumulation of at least 0.25-inch (6.4 mm) of ice on exposed surfaces.
