Template:Sideicon Template:FFXIII Enemy Humbaba is a Mark and regular enemy in Final Fantasy XIII. It appears in Missions 50 and 58.

Battle

Like some of the other powerful Behemoths, Humbaba stands up when low on HP, fully healing itself and allowing it to do more damage, now using Aeroga and Sunder. Its chain gauge does not drop, however, and it is often easy to stagger it soon after its transformation.

Strategy

For a 5-star attempt, the player should enter the fight with Lightning as the party leader. Using a Fortisol beforehand also helps. The party should begin the battle with Espionage and debuff it with at least Imperil, Deshell, and Deprotect.

The party can then switch to Tri-disaster, and after about one wave of assault the Humbaba should be on low health. Lightning can use Army of One to push the Humbaba down and stop it from transforming. The rest of the party should be able to finish it off after this.

In low levels buffs, such as Protect, Haste, and Enfire, are integral. A team of Fang, Lightning, and Hope can use all paradigm roles. It is best to enter the battle in the Guerrilla (SAB/RAV/SYN) paradigm to apply buffs, before switching to the offensive with Relentless Assault (RAV/COM/RAV) and Aggression (COM/COM/RAV). If one wants to get the stagger up quickly without dealing much damage, using Smart Bomb (SAB/RAV/RAV) will help. When healing is required, Discretion (COM/MED/MED) paradigm will keep up the chain gauge while healing up. Having Fang know Daze will help.

Etymology

In Akkadian mythology, Humbaba (Assyrian spelling) or Huwawa (Babylonian) was a monstrous giant of immemorial age raised by Utu, the Sun. Humbaba/Huwawa was also the guardian of the Cedar Forest where the gods lived. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh slays Humbaba for fame and glory.
