[edit] In the Game

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

If the player talks to some of the people in the first town they reach in World of Ruin, one person will mention some ancient evils that were released when Kefka caused the Apocalypse, consisting of Humbaba, the Eight Dragons, and Deathgaze.

[edit] First fight

In the World of Ruin, Humbaba is a vicious monster who prowls the Mobliz region and terrorizes orphans who live there. Terra Branford befriends these orphans after being separated from the party when Kefka destroyed the world. The player first runs into it in Mobliz where it easily defeats Terra, leaving the player to fight it with the party of Celes Chere and Sabin Rene Figaro, if you have him. The player may also have Gau at this point. Upon defeating Humbaba, the player receives the Fenrir magicite.

[edit] Second fight

The player has the option to return to Mobliz later in the game where they must face Humbaba again, finally killing it, and making the town safe for Duane and Katarin to raise their newborn child. Upon defeating Humbaba this time Terra finally decides to rejoin the party.

[edit] Strategy

Humbaba is essentially the same opponent in both fights, as it uses the same attacks. Both times, the attacks are dangerous. It uses Thundaga and Blow Fish. It is weak to Poison, so casting Bio and having Sabin double up on Poison Claws works nicely. In the second battle, having Shadow around to throw Poison Rods at the enemy helps, too. If you have Gau, you should use an appropriate Rage.

During the second fight, Humbaba uses an attack called BabaBreath, which blows two random characters (only one random character if you use the Vanish/Doom trick) out of the battle. Terra then rejoins the party in her Esper form and helps finish the battle off. Because Terra is permanently in her Esper form when she joins the battle, she easily compensates the lost characters.

[edit] Trivia

  • The first battle with Humbaba is scripted (both parts), meaning in terms of the story, Terra is supposed to lose and Celes (and optionally, Sabin) drive it off. In fact, all of Terra's attacks do zero damage. Even if the player casts Vanish followed by Doom/Death, it will still register as a loss.
