The Horned Devil, also known as the R.GOYLE in the Nintendo Entertainment System version, is an enemy in the original Final Fantasy.
Horned Devils are quick; even faster than their Gargoyle counterparts, and can deal up to four hits per normal attack. They cast Fire, Fira, and Hold spells and resist fire and ice element attacks, but due to their low HP and physical defense, they can be defeated easily with one or two hits.
They later appear in the Citadel of Trials where they are more of a nuisance than a threat. Utilizing Thor's Hammer and/or the Gauntlets to cast Thundara can handly wipe out mobs of them as they do not resist lightning element.
Horned Devil is a palette swap of the Gargoyle enemy. At one point in development, their physical attacks may have been intended to inflict a status condition, because their physical attacks are set to check Poison/Stone resistance upon inflicting a status, but aren't given any status to inflict.
