Battle

The first battle with a Gigas can be a surprisingly difficult one, if the party is not ready for it. Like most creatures of his type, he is a muscle-bound brute with a high Attack stat. He does not cast any spells, instead relying on a constant physical barrage. Depending on the characters' HP levels, he may be able to knock them out in one hit. He also boasts very high Defense and Magic Defense stats, making it difficult to land substantial hits on him.

Strategy

The Hill Gigas is easily put to sleep, and if the Sleep Blade was picked up early on in the Dreadnought, it can be equipped and used to put the giant to sleep while the party dishes out damage. Make sure to cast Blink and Protect on the party to reduce the damage the Hill Gigas dishes out.

Etymology

Gigas is a popular term for races of giants in fantasy games. Gigas is a Greek word meaning "giant", originally used to describe the race of Gigantes in Greek mythology and is used in the scientific name, as the specific epithet, of hundreds of species of animals and dozens of plant species to denote their size.

The mythology and legends of many different cultures include monsters of human appearance but prodigious size and strength. Giant is the English word, coined 1297, commonly used for such beings, derived from one of the most famed examples: the gigantes of Greek mythology.
