Help:FAQ

From Final Fantasy Wiki

This section and its sub-sections are managed by Crazyswordsman. If something is not explained to a satisfactory degree (or not at all), please contact him on his Talk page. However, feel free to correct typos, should you find any.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This page is for FFWiki related stuff only, and NOT for asking for help in your game. People looking for game strategy should look here.

Contents

[edit] Adding to the FFWiki

[edit] How do I make an article?

Simply type the title (take account for the casing) in the search line and press the "Go"-button. If the title doesn't already exist, you will be prompted to create an article with that pagename. The exact wording is:
There is no page titled "<your input>". You can create this page.
Now simply press the red link that appears, which will direct you to an empty page with the title you searched for and you will be free to start the article. But please be so kind as to make a search (by pressing the "Search"-button) before starting an article, just in case we might have missed a redirect or if what you are about to create is already a section in an existing article.

[edit] What should or should not be added?

If you have any doubts about if a piece of information you have should or shouldn't be added to the FFWiki, check out the Scope. The Scope is a page with a list of all the games that are featured on the FFWiki as well of a short explanation of what kind of information, related to that game, may be added.

[edit] The Scope okays it, now what?

Now, just go for it. Even if it's a bit crude, add it to the article. We have several users who regularly check the Recent Changes page and are able to smooth the information out. And if the information is wrong, it will be removed, no harm done. We encourage trying, rather than punish failing, it gives a better atmosphere. The only time anyone is ever punished for editing, is if the edit is a clear act of vandalism (e.g. blanking pages, adding utter nonsense like "Vincent Valentine is a RoxxoR character" and stuff like that).

[edit] Why can't I say that someone/something is Roxxor?

Because all articles are to remain as objective as possible. If they weren't objective, it would be a constant editing war between those who love a specific game/character/skill and those who hate it and we would like to avoid that if possible. However, you are completely free to write whatever you wish on your Userpage such as "Final Fantasy VII sucks so hard, I thought it was a new brand of vacuum cleaners." (if you hate FFVII) or "Final Fantasy VII is the best thing since sliced bread... and cookies." (if you love FFVII).

[edit] Any specifics on what should be on a page?

As a matter of fact, there is. To make sure we are able to present as much information as possible, a few guidelines have been written, referred to as our Manual of Style. But if you don't have all the specifics, don't worry about it. Just add what you do have and stick the Expand template at the top of the article. You do this simply by writing Expand at the top.

[edit] I saw a good article on Wikipedia, can I dump it here?

We try to avoid material that are copy/pasted from external sources, as we find it somewhat easier to start off with a blank slate. This way, we are less influenced by the setup of other people and are able to write more specific and satisfying material. But if you absolutely have no other choice, then make sure to add the De-Wikification template at the top of the article, so that other user may become aware of it being dumped from the Wiki and so that a De-Wikification process may start. You do this simply by writing De-wikify at the top of the page.

[edit] What should I do if I come across a poorly written article?

Re-write it to the best of your abilities. But if you don't have any knowledge of the subject of the article, you can simply stick the Cleanup template at the top of the article, to show that it needs some tender love and care. You do this by writing Cleanup at the top of the article.

[edit] Spamming the recent changes list

To avoid spamming of the recent changes list, use the button called Show preview (it's right next to the Save page button, so it's not hard to spot) to make sure that all the links, templates, tables, etc. you have are working properly. Making dozens of minor edits on the same page with 30 seconds in-between, because something didn't work and you're "trying again" by making a change and saving, is annoying to other users and make possible vandals harder to catch, if they vandalize a page in-between 10-11 minor edits made by someone who didn't want to use Show preview or simply neglected it for reasons unknown. Of course, slip-ups, typos, etc. occur and it's perfectly understandable if someone misses it the first time around and fixing those will not be considered spamming the list. This also applies for Templates, as the effects of changes to the template has had on articles it is included in can only be seen after the page has been saved.

[edit] I'm bored... Have any articles I could make or expand?

Well, if you don't know what to do, the absolute best place to check out would be the To-Do List. There, you can see a list of the most important things that needs to be made. This can include finding images, finishing articles, making templates, write walkthroughs, you name it. If you are more in the mood for adding stats and such, try checking out the Articles with Incomplete Tables. For minor article expansion not noted in the to-do list, you can check out the Articles to be Expanded or the Stubs.

[edit] Userpages

Userpages are personal pages which are accessible when you create an account. It is also this page that will be linked to, when ever you sign a comment by using four tildes, i.e. ~~~~. It is not required that you make a userpage, but it is somewhat advised to drop a line or two about yourself.

[edit] Objectivity

On your own personal userpage, you get to throw objectivity out the window. Write about anything you wish. About yourself, about what games you like, what games you don't like, why something is better than something else and so on. Go nuts with it. The only thing we don't accept are comments that are directly insulting to a specific person or a group of people, i.e. racist comments, insults to people's religion, etc. So please use common sense when it comes to that.

[edit] Userboxes

"A picture says more than a thousand words", and a Userbox says at least 10 or 15. Userboxes are quick and simple ways to get a point across, as most users will start off by looking at the userboxes to get information about someone. Next to the userbox is a code, which must be inserted between a set of curly brackets (since they act like templates). For instance, user rc for the User rc userbox. It is generally advised that they be put in a table, due to not all templates having the same height, which can lead to problems with white spaces. The correct way to put up this would be (example uses six of the same userboxes, results can be seen on the right, the actual setup on the left):

Setup

user rc
user rc
user rc
user rc
user rc
user rc

However, if you have your userboxes in a section on its own, changing style="float:right" to align="center" is advised.

[edit] Talk Bubbles

TacticAngel
TALK - 09:50, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
The talk bubbles or talk text you notice in all of the talk pages that look more or less like this can be found at Template:Talk. This template, as you will notice, is quite blank. If you desire a talk template and plan to use it with any consistency, we would suggest that you create a template of your own that references this template.

As the creator and a person of spartan tastes, I choose to use a simple black and white theme. You would want to create a new Template page. We would suggest naming it by your username, or something identifiable with your username. For instance, I am TacticAngel, so my text template is called Template:TacticAngelText.

You will want to include only a certain portion of all information in your text template. It should look something like this when you are done.

{{Talk
image=Myfavoriteimage.jpg
name= YOURUSERNAME
time= {time}
text= {text}
}}<noinclude></noinclude>

Save this, and in the future you will only need to do "" in order to have a neat little talk template. The two things you will want to be mindful of is that you need to fill out all blanks, you need to leave time and text as variables (surrounded by "{}") and you do not want to include "File:" in front of your image name.

If you want a more advanced text box, like most people have opted for, view this. There are a fair more variables that are required than the mandatory three (image is optional) shown above. Review what I have posted below if you have any questions about how to use the more option-filled version of the text template. Otherwise, feel free to leave a message on my talk page and I will try to respond as quickly as possible.

[edit] Example

{{Talk
image=FFIII-Refia-WhiteMage.jpg
color=Pink
color2=#ABCDEF
color3=#FFEEDD
namecolor=#012345
namefonttype=Times New Roman
textcolor=Navy
textcolor2=Red
line=#DD33EE
line2=#EE33DD
fonttype=Arial
name=CookieMunster
sig=...is hungry
time={time}
text={text}
}}

...will create...

CookieMunster - ...is hungry
TALK - {time}
{text}

Note: Color variables will take either color names, as per HTML, or hexidecimal. Click here to see the color chart.

Summary
 1. Create your talk template the same way you create an article: by typing, without quotation marks, "Template:your talk template name" in the Search box. Press Go, then click on the red link of the "You can create this page" up there. We advise you to choose a short name for your talk template.
 2. Copy the coding of the talk template you wish to follow and paste it into your empty talk template page.
 3. Fill out the coding after the "=" sign accordingly. E.g. "image=your image's name" or "color=your desired color". Leave the "time={time}" and "text={text}" parameters alone.
 4. Save and you are now ready to use it. Just type, without quotation marks, "" to leave your message.

As a side note, if you want to make a Talk Bubble with a dark background, please use extremely light font. White works best. If you use a dark or even medium font on a dark background, nobody will be able to read your words without highlighting them.

You are only allowed to create one talk template per user. Though you are allowed more, you must host these in userspace, or in walkthrough space if you want to use one just for your walkthrough. Hosting a template in userspace works the same as template space, to use it, you would have to type "". You are also allowed to use multiple talkboxes in one template using choose/option or . For help creating one of these, leave a message here.

[edit] Images

[edit] Personal Images (for userpage-usage)

Due to copyright restrictions, personal images can no longer be uploaded to the wiki, unless they are:

 • a): Related to the Final Fantasy series (these must be categorised as fair use images).
 • b): Original material or fan-art which is self-created.
 • c): Fan-art or original material which you have obtained permission from the creator to use.

If your image does not fall within these three categories, it will be deleted. Consider uploading it to an external image hosting website, such as Photobucket; and link to it from there.

[edit] Before uploading

The most important things to do before uploading are:

 1. To perform a search (enter a keyword and click "search"). Make sure that categories and images are part of your searching criteria. These can be marked either every time you search at the bottom of the search page or by default in Special:Preferences (requires that you have an account).
 2. To check Category:Images. There will be subcategories leading to a specific game, e.g. Final Fantasy X, and again subcategories leading to type of image, e.g. characters, locations, etc.

It is important to do this, so that we don't have several copies of the same image taking up space.

[edit] During (or after) uploading

When uploading the image write replacing the "??" with the number of the game, i.e. IX or VIII in the "Summary" box to make sure the image is categorized, e.g. Category: Final Fantasy VI Images (it is case-sensitive). If it's a spin-off/sequel/prequel, please write the entire title. To check the titles to use for each respective game, see the sub-categories of Category:Images. If you forget to add the category during upload, please be so kind as to click the "edit" tab and add it then.

[edit] How to upload

[edit] New uploads

On the left side of your browser, you will see a box named "Toolbox" with a link called "Upload file". Click the button next to the empty space. The name of it changes to fit the language setup of the computer (For English-speakers, it's called "Browse..."). Then simply locate the file and upload it. Of image formats, you will be able to upload .JPG, .PNG and .GIF (the last one is not listed on the upload page, but it is possible).

[edit] Over pre-existing images

First and foremost, the only times you may upload over a pre-existing image is if the image you wish to upload is either of better quality or a more reasonable size of the exact same motif.

If the image fits these criteria, here's how you do. Go to the existing image, e.g. Image:Ffx-chocobo.jpg. At the bottom will be a link called "Upload a new version of this file". Click it. The Destination filename will already be filled out; do not change it. Select the image you want to upload and make sure it has the same extension as the existing image, i.e., if the existing image is .jpg, your image has to be .jpg as well. When you have selected the image you want to upload, click the upload button. You should now get a warning message saying that a file of this name already exists. Ignore it and click the Save file button. After a minute or two, the change will be visible.

[edit] Naming!

It is absolutely vital that you give an image a name that makes sense. This is because images cannot be moved/renamed. So once you've found the file you wish to upload, using the "Browse..." function, the destination filename will automatically be the same as the filename on your computer. You can manually change this. Giving it a good name will help reduce duplicate images and makes it easier to find, should you forget its name (as it will pop up during searches). Example of a good name would be the before-mentioned Image:Ffx-chocobo.jpg. You can tell from its name that it is an image of a chocobo from FFX. An example of a bad name would be Image:128.gif. You would have no way of knowing that this was an image of Necron from FFIX by just viewing its name. The sole exception for this rule applies to images not to be used in articles, e.g. wallpapers or userimages. However, as a common courtesy, it should be mentioned in the description what it is for.

But most importantly, never EVER include a + in the name, because this will make it impossible for anyone to gain access to the image.

About Wikis

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a website that you can edit. The word comes from "wikiwiki", a Hawaiian word for "fast". Wikis are designed to be collaborative so people can work together on a wiki project, so it's possible to build up a lot of content very quickly.

Find out more about the background of wikis on Wikipedia.

Getting started

Creating Your Wikia Account

The "Create an Account" button (encircled in red) is located in the top right hand corner, next to the "Login" button.

While most Wikia wikis can be edited anonymously, creating an account allows you to keep track of your edits and only takes a moment.

 1. Click the "create an account" link in the upper right hand corner of the page.
 2. Choose a username and a password in the newly opened box.
 3. Provide your birthdate. This is both a safety precaution and as a means of preserving the integrity of the site while complying with federal regulations.
 4. Type in the word you see in the "captcha" image shown. This shows us you are a real person!
 5. Choose whether to provide an email address - it's optional, but if you don't give a valid email address you will not be able to recover your account if you forget your password.

Using the wiki

Finding Articles

Search box

All pages (on the Monaco skin) have a search box at the top left. Just enter your search term here, and click the search arrow. An alternative is search suggest, simply start typing in the search box and it will try to guess articles based on what you're typing.

Recent Changes

Recent changes is one of the most important pages on a wiki. It lists every edit that's made, tells you who made the change, and shows you what edit summary they added. So, it's a great way to get an idea of what's going on in your wiki and what pages are most active.

You can get to the recent changes page by clicking on the "Recent changes" page in the toolbox on the left or by going to Special:RecentChanges. You can get to Recent Changes on any Wikia wiki by typing Special:RecentChanges after the /wiki/ part of a Wikia URL. For example, to get to the Recent Changes page for Recipes Wiki, you would type http:/recipes.wikia.com/wiki/Special:RecentChanges.

Keeping Track of Changes to an Article

Every page has a "history" page to go with it. This lists the usernames of everyone who has edited the page, and tells you when it was edited. It also gives you links to old versions... nothing is lost when a page is changed, you can always recover previous versions. To see the history of a page, look for the "history" link above each article.

More... How history works

Knowing when a Page is Changed

The watch button has a picture of binoculars next to it.

You can "watch" any page, by adding it to a list of pages kept for your username. To do this, click the "watch" link at the top of the article you want to watch. If you want, you can set your preferences to have an email sent to you each time a page on your watchlist is edited.

Changing Your Email, Password Etc.

To change your email address, password etc. click on "More" and then choose "My Preferences" from the drop-down menu that appears.

Almost everything you might want to change about the way Wikia sites display and function can be found in your preferences. To get there:

 1. Click the "MORE" button in the upper right (between the "Watch list" and "Logout" links).
 2. Choose "My preferences" from the drop-down menu that appears. You can also visit Special:Preferences.

If password reset does not work, please Contact Wikia for help.

Editing

Changing a Wiki Page

The "Edit" button

Editing a page is easy:

 1. Click the "Edit this page" link above any article. Doing so will open a window that looks like a word processor document.
 2. Type your changes in the text box. Tip: It's a good idea to preview your edit to be sure the changes look the way they're supposed to. This allows you to see and fix mistakes before they get saved onto the wiki. If the article looks, good, click the "save" button at the bottom of the text box.

There's no way to break a wiki, so feel free to dive in and start making changes right away!

More...Editing tips

Undoing an edit

Keeping bad content off the wiki is just as important as adding good content. That's why it's important to know how to revert back to a previous version of an article.

Every edit made is stored on a Wiki, that means it's easy to go back to an old version if an edit is a mistake or vandalism. To change an edit for an article, go to the article's "history" page. Each date/time listed on the history page is a link to a different version of that article. Just click the version you want, then click edit, followed by the save button. Wiki admins have a shortcut link for this, and can "rollback" the most recent edits with one click.

More... Revert and Rollback

Formatting text

You can also bold and italicize text by highlighting text and clicking the 'b' and 'i' buttons above the editing area.

The rich text editor makes bolding and italicizing as easy as selecting text and clicking a button. There's also wikitext code that will work as a shortcut if you prefer to keep your fingers on the keys:

 • Bolding: Surround a word with three single quotation marks ().
 • Italicizing use two quotation marks ().
 • Putting it together: You can make text bold and italic with five quotation marks ().

Linking to another page on a wiki

As with formatting, there's more than one way to link to another page. In the rich text editor, select the text you want to turn into a link, then click the "Link" button (with the chain links) to pop up a dialog box which makes it simple to link internally to other pages on the wiki, or externally to sites elsewhere on the web.

The wikitext shortcut for internal page linking works in either the rich text or source editing box. To link to a another page, you put the page title in double square brackets. So to link to the page "Example", you would type Example.

Once you know how to link to other wiki pages, you're ready to learn the pipe trick.

More... About Linking

Starting a New Page

Inputbox from Recipes Wiki

To start a new page you can use three basic methods:

 • Click the "New page" link next to the pencil icon in the sidebar.
 • Click a red (broken) link. A broken link is a link to a page that doesn't (yet) exist on the wiki.
 • Use an inputbox -- an article creation box that can be place on the wiki's main page.

Remember to do a search for your topic before creating a new page. This is especially true of large wikis where there is a high probability that the subject you want to write about has already been added to the wiki by someone else.

Renaming (moving) Pages

This is the page you'll be redirected to after clicking the "Move" button.

Any logged in user can move pages. To do so, use the "move" link above the article:

 1. Click "move".
 2. Enter the correct title
 3. Click "Move page".

Note: It's a good idea to explain your move in the box provided.

More... A moving experience...

Using Templates

A template is a page with text ready to be used on many pages without having to type it in each time. It looks like a normal page, but the title starts with "Template:". Templates are good for content that has to be added to many pages on the wiki, since they save you the time and effort of having to write the same text and wiki code over and over again.

To use a template, you just need to type its title inside curly brackets. So name will add the text from the page Template:Name.

Templates can get very complex, but at their simplest they are just pages that can be used many times using a simple form.

Adding an Image

Upload link in the toolbox

There are three ways of adding an image:

 • Upload it to the wiki using the Add image link, next to the painting icon, in the toolbox. You will be able to choose an image from your computer, and save it on the wiki. Then you can add it to an article by editing a page to add the image name in the form .
 • Add an image while you are editing a page. Just click on the upload button File:Button wmu.png and you will see a form to upload and insert your image. See Help:Add Images for more on this method.
Import Free Images search result list
 • The Import Free Images Button: Import free images allows you to upload freely licensed Flickr images without leaving your wiki! All you need to do is go to Special:Importfreeimages and type what you are looking for in the search box. Click search and thumbnails of Creative Commons licensed Flickr images matching your search terms will appear. Click on the (import this) link below an image to upload it to the wiki.
More... How do I upload and display an image?

Categorizing Pages

The gray "Add category" button at the bottom of the text box makes it easy to search among existing categories or type in new ones.

To add categories in wikitext, add to the article. This will add the category to the bottom of the page. If you want to link to a category, rather than add a page to it, you need to add a colon inside the brackets: :Category:Name.
