FFII PSP Haste

Haste in Final Fantasy II.

This should be quick!

Haste (ヘイスト, Heisuto?), also known as Fast, is a spell in the Final Fantasy series that induces the status of the same name, making the afflicted able to act more often during combat. Since its appearance at the start of the series, Haste has appeared in almost every series title as a magic ability. It is generally a middle tier buff spell support characters and jobs learn in later portions of titles.

Overview[]

Rosa using Haste from FFIV Pixel Remaster

Rosa using Haste in Final Fantasy IV (Pixel Remaster).

Haste serves as one of the primary recurring buff spells in the series, appearing since original Final Fantasy. Despite its recurring speed increasing properties in most titles, the first three entries in the series had Haste initially serve the role of increasing the hit rate of a target's physical attacks, boosting the damage they dealt. Starting from Final Fantasy IV it exclusively took a role in raising a target's speed, allowing them to have their turns faster and increase the charging speed of their abilities. Titles with magic types often categorize Haste as a Time Magic spell, but there have been several entries that include it as a White Magic or Black Magic spell.

Newer entries would begin to regularly feature group-wide variants, with Haste often being relegated to single targets. Upgraded versions have names deriving from the series recurring Magic tier system. The following are some of the recurring upgraded tiers:

  • Hastera - (ヘイスラ, Heisura?, lit. Hasra) - Serves as a unique form of Haste that exclusively appears in the Chocobo Racing series of titles. When a player uses two stacks of the Haste magicite, it will increase the speed of the driver for a period of time.
  • Hastega (ヘイスガ, Heisuga?, lit. Hasga) - Serves as a recurring group variant of Haste, originally appearing in Final Fantasy V as a Time Magic spell. It often grants Haste to all allies, with some titles having the spell's effects have a shorter duration than its single target counterpart.

In addition, several titles have featured unique or alternate upgraded forms for Haste. These spells include unique properties, or are used by specific jobs:

  • Hasteja (ヘイスジャ, Heisuja?, lit. Hasja) - An upgraded version of Haste that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy Tactics as a Time Magick. It has a similar area of effect range to its predecessor, but has a greater height range.
  • Haste I - XVI (ヘイストLv.1 - ヘイストLv.16, Heisuto Lv.1 - Heisuto Lv.16?) - Due to the unique progression system of Final Fantasy II, Haste levels up like all other magics. There are sixteen versions, granting increased hit count and success rates with each level.
  • Haste II (ヘイストII, Heisuto II?, lit. Haste II) - An upgraded form of Haste that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy XI as a high tier Red Mage White Magic spell. Due to the -ra and -ga tiers in the title being used exclusively for area-of-effect versions, Haste magics serve as the single target versions used by most jobs with access to White Magic, with its upgraded versions using Roman numerals to signify their enhanced rank.
  • Geo-Haste (ジオヘイスト, Jio Heisuto?, lit. Geo Haste) and Indi-Haste (インデヘイスト, Inde Heisuto?, lit. Indi Haste) - Unique versions of Haste usable by the Geomancer job of Final Fantasy XI as high tier Geomancy spells. Both grant increased attack speed for party members within range of the caster.
  • Lv.5 Haste (レベル5ヘイスト, Reberu 5 Heisuto?, lit. Level 5 Haste) - A unique version of Haste that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift as an Arcane Magick. It grants Haste to friend or foe alike whose levels are a multiple of 5.

Non-Final Fantasy guest appearances[]

Other Square Enix titles[]

Chrono Trigger Haste

Haste in Chrono Trigger.

Haste has appeared outside of the Final Fantasy series as a magic ability in several other Square Enix titles.

The spell's first appearance outside of the series would be in SaGa 3 (known as the Final Fantasy Legend III in the west) as Fast (ヘイスト, Heisuto?, lit. Haste), serving as an enhancing White Magic spell. The Japanese-exclusive 3D remake of the title includes Haste once again as an enhancing magic, with its upgrade being Hasga (ヘイスガ, Heisuga?).

Haste also appears in Chrono Trigger as a single tech of Marle, which cuts half the time between turns for a single ally.

Bravely Default - Haste

Haste in Bravely Default.

The Kingdom Hearts series features Haste as a recurring auto-ability, increasing a character's running speed in 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep. Several Haste-based abilities also appear in numerous other games, with MP Haste being the most recurring, being joined with its upgrades MP Hastera and MP Hastega in Kingdom Hearts II. Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance also feature Attack Haste and Magic Haste, which reduce the reload speed of attack and magic Deck Commands.

Additionally, Haste is a recurring spell in the Bravely series, being the common means of temporarily increasing a target's speed in combat. It serves as a Time Magic spell in titles associated with the first Bravely Default, while Bravely Default II changes Haste into a Divination spell. All titles feature Hastega as the spell's upgraded form.

Influences in other media[]

RWBY - Time Dilation

Weiss casting a Time Dilation glyph on herself.

The Haste from Final Fantasy has served as an influence in RWBY, serving as the primary inspiration for the Time Dilation attack used by Weiss Schnee. According to the commentary present in RWBY VOLUME 2 BLU-RAY / DVD COMBO PACK, the time glyph called is based on the spell Haste. In addition, Haste had previously appeared in the online fan-animated series Dead Fantasy as an attack used by Tifa Lockhart, both Dead Fantasy and RWBY were created by Monty Oum.
