Etymology[]

The Romani, not to be confused with Romanians, a separate ethnic group, arrived in Europe as migrants from northern India around the 14th century, and now also live in North America and Australia. Many Romani groups have preserved elements of their traditional culture, including an itinerant existence and the Romani language. Gypsy is a term which was and still is widely used by others to refer to the Romani, originating to from a mistaken impression that the Romani came from Egypt. In some regions the term is increasingly considered to have negative or even racist connotations, with Roma or Romani being preferred, while in other regions it is considered acceptable or even used by the Romani to identify themselves.
