Guildenstern is the final boss of Vagrant Story. This is his second form, created after his human form is defeated. This form has the appearance of an angelic monster. Guildenstern's HP and MP stats are 666, in reference to the Christian number of the devil.

Stats[]

Battle[]

Guildenstern is difficult to defeat. The battle begins on a magic platform on top of the ruined Cathedral. Guildenstern speeds around the platform, casting powerful elemental spells and debuffing and dispelling any positive buffs on Ashley.

The only way to attack him is to get near the edge of the platform until he casts a status-changing spell. Before Guidenstern casts it, the player will have a chance to attack. After some damage is dealt, Guidenstern will fly up and the player will have a chance to attack him as he flies over Ashley's head. If the player fails, Guildenstern will execute his ultimate attack: Bloody Sin.

Strategy[]

A bow-type weapon reaches his body and chest more easily, as these are his most vulnerable spots. However, it is not wise to use the bow-type Break Arts due to most of them having a Dark or Light affinity. Equipping accessories and gems that deal extra damage to Evil enemies are useful, and the Heavy Shot and Crimson Pain chain combo can help deal the most damage. The player can use a Vera and Cure potion to heal afterward.

The only way to defend against Bloody Sin is to use Demonscale as a Defense Ability, though the timing of it is difficult, as it occurs during the last few frames when the camera rapidly zooms in on Ashley.

Etymology[]

Guildenstern, along with Rosencrantz, are minor characters in one of Shakespeare's tragedies, Hamlet. He is also one of the protagonists in Tom Stoppard's absurdist play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
