Grunt is an enemy from Final Fantasy VII encountered in the No. 1 Reactor, the game's opening location, and is a possible encounter in the Battle Square opening round before the player obtains the Tiny Bronco. In the Battle Square, it has enhanced stats with double the normal HP and 25% higher Attack and Magic Attack.

Grunts and their variations each have four kanji on their arms, translating to "flammable" (火気厳禁, Kaki Genkin?).

Grunts were called Combatants in the earliest Final Fantasy VII demo, and also appeared in the boss battle accompanying a large Sweeper; this battle replaces the Guard Scorpion battle from the final game. In the remake, the Grunt is called Shock Trooper.

Battle[]

Grunt uses their two attacks, Handclaw and Beam Gun, equally, and both are weak. Beam Gun is marginally stronger and a Grunt is more likely to use it from the back row. Grunt is more powerful than the MP encountered in the same reactor, but is still far from formidable.

Grunt was supposed to use Handclaw on targets on the front row and Beam Gun on targets on the back row, but due to flaws in the AI script, does not differentiate between targets on different rows.
