VII

Gorky-ffvii-field

Gorkii, also known as Gorky outside of battle, and as Gorki in the BradyGames guide, is the first boss that Yuffie fights alone in the pagoda in Wutai. He represents Power. Losing to Gorkii does not prompt a Game Over.

FormationsEdit

# Formation
623 Gorkii (No Rows)

LocationsEdit

Wutai
Godo's Pagoda, 1f. 623

BattleEdit

Even though the battle is not a back attack, some of the special attack formation rules still apply to the battles fought in the pagoda. The Change command to change row is greyed out, Gorkii starts with an empty ATB bar, and the first physical attack Yuffie inflicts deals double damage.

Gorkii fights in a similar manner to the demon counterparts met earlier in the game. The only difference is that Gorkii casts Demi2 instead of Demi3. He can cast Barrier on himself to increase his defense, but he is not a significant threat.

EtymologyEdit

All the bosses in the Wutai Pagoda appear to have a link to theater. Gorkii's name is most likely a reference to Maxim Gorky, a 19th century Russian author, playwright and political activist. The intention was that each opponent would speak in a different way based on their origin, but this is missed in the English translation.

The name is also likely a pun in Japanese. The kanji ?, meaning "power" or "strength", can be read as "riki", which is a part of the enemy's Japanese name. This is relevant because Gorky's transformation is "Power" (, chikara?). The pun could also be extended to include the first part of its name. It may be a pun on 剛力?, read "gōriki", meaning "Herculean strength". It could also be a pun on 強力 (kyōryoku?, lit. powerful), which would be read "gōriki" if both characters were read with their Go reading.
