Gladiators aspire to become masters of the sword, the most ubiquitous weapon in all of Eorzea. The sword is a deceptively simple weapon, which is why many take it up to achieve their goals. Wealth, power, love—all seem within reach when duly armed. A gladiator, however, understands that to live by the sword is not a decision to be taken lightly. To walk upon the bloodsands is to court death, and we must ever be prepared to enter Thal's realm. But when you stand triumphant in the Coliseum and hear the crowd chanting your name, you feel...immortal. Of course, victory goes only to those willing to work for it. A gladiator must rigorously train not only to deliver fierce attacks, but also to weather them. Indeed, learning the shield is just as important as learning the sword. These defensive skills are especially important when fighting alongside allies. In battle, a gladiator is often relied upon to draw the enemy's attention while his weaker allies seize the opportunity to attack. It is for this reason that gladiators are often considered indispensable in battle, for none are more skilled in the arts of war than we.

The Gladiator (剣術士, Kenjutsu Shi?) is a Disciple of War in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced in the original release, with a guild situated in the Coliseum in Ul'dah. It can be upgraded to the Paladin job via the quest "Paladin's Pledge" with a level 30 Gladiator.

Profile

Gladiator

Gladiators specialize in the handling of all manner of one-handed blades, from daggers to longswords, be it single- or double-edged, straight or curved. A defining characteristic of the guild is its emphasis on diverse combat tactics, training its members to bring their martial skills to bear in any situation.

As such, there are practitioners who marry sword with shield, seeking to defend their fellow companions. Others opt for an empty off hand, choosing instead to focus entirely on their sword arm. The gladiator's proficiency with blades extends to those hurled at range, such as throwing knives.

Lodestone

Gladiators attack using a variety of styles of sword and is the only Discipline of War capable of equipping a shield. The Gladiator's primary role in a party is that of a tank, and therefore their focus is to shield their allies from enemy ire by forcing them to focus their attacks on them.

The Gladiator's skillset contains many abilities that allow them to increase enmity with enemies, as well as abilities that increases their defense. As such Gladiators tend to have the highest defense of all roles in the game, being able to equip heavy armor. This is offset with having one of the lowest damage per second ratio of any role.

Paladin

Roegadyn-Paladin

For centuries, the elite of the Sultansworn have served as personal bodyguards to the royal family of Ul'dah. Known as paladins, these men and women marry exquisite swordplay with stalwart shield work to create a style of combat uncompromising in its defense. Clad in brilliant silver armor, they charge fearlessly into battle, ever ready to lay down their lives for their liege.

To be a paladin is to protect, and those who choose to walk this path will become the iron foundation upon which the party's defense is built.

Lodestone

Paladins further increases the defensive capabilities of its base class. Paladins gain abilities that sacrifice offense for defense and vice versa. They also make use of healing and barrier spells.

Equipment

The Gladiator class is defined by wielding a one-handed sword. Since they are also meant to use a shield, they are the only combat class without two-handed weapons. For this reason, Paladin is the only job to have two Relic/Zodiac weapons.

In terms of late game armor and accessories, Gladiators and Paladins share "Fending" gear with Marauders, Warriors, and Dark Knights.

Job gauges were introduced in 4.0 Stormblood. The Paladin uses the Oath Gauge.

The Oath Gauge displays an icon that changes color depending on whether the Paladin is in a defensive or offensive stance. The gauge also displays the strength of Sword or Shield Oath. Defensive stance (Shield Oath) reduces the damage take and increases enmity. Paladins in offensive stance (Sword Oath) increases damage after each auto-attack. Several actions require a stronger Oath before they can be used, and will weaken Oath with each use. Using auto-attacks will strengthen Sword Oath and blocking attacks will strengthen Shield Oath.

In PVP, Oath is used to activate Cover and the gauge will gradually deplete when Cover is in effect. Using combo actions will refill the Oath Gauge.

Limit Break

Gladiators' and Paladins' Limit Breaks focus on drastically raising the defense and magic defense of the entire party for a short period of time. They both have the same Level 1 and Level 2 limit breaks as other Tanks.

Etymology

A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers but most were slaves schooled under harsh conditions. Gladiators were celebrated in art, and it became a feature of politics and social life in the Roman world.

Trivia

  • After patch 1.20, gladiators received many of the abilities from the scrapped Sentinel discipline, and lost a bit of attack power in exchange for better defense and tanking abilities.
  • Gladiator animations are used by any Disciple of the Hand or Land that enters combat with their tools.
