Fungus is one of the antagonists of Final Fantasy: Unlimited. One of the four Lords of Gaudium, Fungus is the first to face Kaze and the Hayakawa twins Yu and Ai Hayakawa. He was voiced by Daisuke Gori in Japanese and Grant James in English.

Profile[]

Fungus is an humanoid mushroom with a large frame, a pipe, and the power to manipulate other fungi. He is a proud general, but compared to the other lords, is incompetent and is mocked for his repeated failures by his peers. While he serves Earl Tyrant loyally and wholeheartedly, his true desire is the restoration of his homeworld rather than serving Chaos.

Story[]

Hailing from a mushroom world where he was a celebrated general, Fungus became a Lord of Gaudium and served Earl Tyrant to restore his homeland. Fungus was the first lord to confront Lisa and the Hayakawa twins after reviving Kaze, though he failed to prove himself much of a threat. He regenerates from a surviving spore after Kaze obliterates him with a summon, though it takes him time to grow back to size. Eventually, both his continued failure and his inability to obtain a piece of Omega places Fungus in danger of being killed off as Oscha takes him to a surfing fragment of his homeland.

Unaware of Oscha’s reasons, Fungus uses the terrain to become an invincible giant and defeats Kaze before sending him and Lisa into the bowels of his domain to be digested. Kidnapping the Hayakawa twins so they can be executed, Fungus reveals his reasons and hopes that he would succeed the Earl in ruling Wonderland before learning that Kaze is still alive and calling him out for a final battle. The chain of events was arranged by the Earl and Oscha to dispose of Fungus by having Crux lace the land with a fungus-eating mold. Fungus despairs, reliving his homeworld's destruction, nourishing Chaos. Kaze gives the fully-powered Fungus a quick death as he thanks his rival for allowing him to die in battle.

Musical theme[]

Fungus's theme is named for him, and is the twenty-first track on the second disc of the soundtrack. The song "Death" plays in his last moments, and is the thirty-second track on the same disc.
