Fungus (Final Fantasy: Unlimited)

From Final Fantasy Wiki

Fungus (フングス, Fungusu) is one of the antagonists of Final Fantasy: Unlimited. One of the four Lords of Gaudium, Fungus is the first to provoke Kaze and the Hayakawa twins Yu and Ai. He was a general of his own homeworld, now consumed by Chaos. He was voiced by Daisuke Ghori in Japanese and Grant James in English.

Appearing as a mushroom humanoid, Fungus is always seen with a pipe in his mouth. Fungus is virtually immortal, and will always reappear after losing a fight against Kaze. This is because Fungus draws his power from his homeworld; the power of the fungi and poison. After dying, Fungus is reborn as a 1/10th miniature of himself and must wait for some time before regaining his original stature.

When the Lords of Gaudium were sent to find the innate pieces of Omega, Fungus failed to find any. Fungus was desperate to impress Earl Tyrant, but with each losing battle the Earl lost his trust on the former general. While Fungus had a foolproof plan of defeating Kaze by using all the power from his world, the Earl had collaborated with Oscha to dispose of the useless Fungus by destroying his world. In his winning moments against Kaze, Fungus lost his power when a mysterious mold sent by Oscha through Crux began to consume his world and his powerful body. Kaze ended his life when seeing that Fungus is in pain, and in the last moments, Fungus thanked Kaze for doing so.

While Fungus is portrayed as being both vicious in battle and being highly loyal to Earl Tyrant, he is often thought of as being more of an anti-villain in the story, much like General Leo of Final Fantasy VI. Rather, he is shown more as a proud figure who, after the loss of his world and all that he loved, found solace in serving another great leader as part of another great force, and often cited that the Earl's rule would be for the betterment of Wonderland. While speaking to Ai and Yu as prisoners, right before his final confrontation with Kaze, he speaks of how he wishes to one day, after helping the Earl conquer Wonderland, become ruler himself, partially in order to fully restore his homeworld.
