Fractional damage (割合ダメージ, Wariai Damēji?, lit. Percentage Damage) is a recurring damage type in the Final Fantasy series. These abilities often deal damage based on the victims' current or maximum HP. Very often, these types of attacks have no effect against bosses. The most famous fractional damage ability is the recurring Gravity spell.

Final Fantasy VI[]

Final Fantasy VI uses fractional damage mainly with abilities that have magical properties. These abilities have a bit flag enabled that redirects the spell power to use a fractional formula:

Most of the fractional damage abilities miss if the target is immune to Death status.

Ability Type Effect
Gravity Magic Reduces target's HP by 1/2. It is vulnerable to Runic, ignores reflect and fails on targets immune to death.
Graviga Magic Reduces HP of all targets by 3/4. It is vulnerable to Runic, ignores reflect and fails on targets immune to death.
Gravija Magic Reduces HP of all targets by 7/8. It is vulnerable to Runic, ignores reflect and is unblockable.
Tornado Magic Attack spell that targets all enemies and allies randomly and reduced HP by 15/16. It fails on targets immune to death and ignores reflect.
Raise Magic Revives KO'd party member with 1/8 of max HP. It is vulnerable to Runic, unblockable and ignores reflect and Defense.
Arise Magic Revives KO'd party member to full HP (factor of 16/16). It is vulnerable to Runic, unblockable and ignores reflect and Defense.
Tiger Bushido Physical damage that halves HP and inflicts Sap status to one target. It is unblockable, fails on targets immune to Death and ignores Reflect and Defense.
Sonic Boom Dance/Enemy ability Reduces HP by 5/8 and inflicts Sap status to one target. It is unblockable, fails on targets immune to Death and ignores Reflect.
Cave In Dance/Enemy ability Reduces HP by 3/4 and inflicts Sap status to one target. It is unblockable, fails on targets immune to Death and ignores Reflect.
Snowball Dance/Enemy ability Reduces HP by 1/2 and inflicts Sap status to one target. It is unblockable, fails on targets immune to Death and ignores Reflect.
Transfusion Lore/Enemy ability Sacrifice self to fully restore the HP/MP (factor of 16/16) of an ally. User is removed from battle and cannot be revived. It is unblockable and ignores Reflect. Lifts statuses: Darkness, Zombie, Poison, Petrify, Doom, Critical, Silence, Berserk, Confuse, Sap, Sleep, Slow, Stop.
Cyclonic Rage/Enemy ability Reduces all targets' HP by 15/16 of their current total. Its Hit Rate is 75, and it fails on targets immune to Death and ignores Reflect.
Gravity Bomb Rage/Enemy ability Reduces a random target's HP by 1/2. It fails on targets immune to Death and ignores reflect.
Shamshir Rage/Enemy ability Reduces a target's HP by 1/2. It is vulnerable to Runic, unblockable and ignores reflect, but fails on targets immune to Death.
Launcher Enemy ability Uses eight missiles on random targets. Each time a target is hit, their HP is halved. Its Hit Rate is 100, and it fails on targets immune to Death. It ignores reflect, defense and split damage.
Missile Enemy ability Reduces one target's HP by 1/4 of its current total and inflicts Sap. Its Hit Rate is 126, but it misses on targets immune to Death.
Hailstone Enemy ability Reduces target's HP by 3/4 of its current total. It is unblockable and ignores reflect, but it fails on targets immune to Death.
Flames of Rebirth Magicite: Phoenix Fully revives KO'd party member(s) with 1/4 of their max HP. It is unblockable and ignores reflect.
Dark Messenger Magicite: Diabolos Reduces HP of all enemies by 15/16 of current total. It is unblockable, ignores reflect (and protection to Death), and also inflicts Sap.
Holy Water Item Removes Zombie and kills undead enemies. Restores 1/8 of Max HP.
Phoenix Down Item Revives KO'd party member with 1/8 of max HP.

Final Fantasy VII[]

FFVII Demi

Demi.

The Demi line of spells is granted by the Gravity Materia and does fractional damage. Demi does damage equal to 25% of the target's current HP, Demi2 50%, and Demi3 75%. Demi and Demi2 can also be cast via the Graviball and T/S Bomb items.

Laser is an E.Skill that halves the target's current HP, used by Death Claw and Dark Dragon (when manipulated).

Safer∙Sephiroth's Super Nova inflicts damage equal to 93.75% of the party's current HP values, as well as various status ailments.

Emerald Weapon is not immune to Gravity, useful for damaging it. It itself employs a Gravity attack, Emerald Beam, which inflicts damage equal to 65.625% of the target's current HP.

FFVII Right Revenge

Right Revenge.

Ruby Weapon's Left and Right Revenge inflicts MP damage equal to 46.875% of the target's current MP and may inflict Poison and Slow-numb on one opponent. Ruby Weapon's Left and Right Thrust inflicts MP damage equal to 78.125% of the target's current MP and may inflict Poison and Slow-numb on one opponent. Ruby Weapon's Big Claw inflicts damage equal to 62.5% of the target's HP on one opponent.

Diamond Weapon's Diamond Flash inflicts damage equal to 87.5% of the target's current HP and inflicts Silence on one or all opponents.

8 eye uses Eyesight to inflicts MP damage equal to 75% of the target's current MP on one opponent.

Allemagne's L3 Flare inflicts damage equal to 125% of the target's current HP on one or all opponents.

Mu and Trickplay's L4 Suicide inflicts damage equal to 96.875% of target's HP and inflicts Small on all opponents. It misses if target's level is not divisible by four. The party can learn it as an E.Skill.

FFVII Dive Kick

Dive Kick.

Valron's Dive Kick inflicts damage equal to 25% of the target's maximum HP on one opponent.

Chuse Tank's Rolling Claw inflicts damage equal to 12.5% of the target's current HP.

2-Faced's Self-destruct sacrifices user to inflict damage equal to 75% of the target's current HP on one opponent.

The Stinger's Sting Bomb inflicts damage equal to 75% of the target's current HP on one opponent.

The Vargid Police's Suicide sacrifices life to inflict damage equal to 18.75% of the target's HP to one opponent.

The Yang's Suicide Yang sacrifices life to inflict damage equal to 96.875% of the target's maximum HP on one opponent.

The Flower Prong's W Laser inflicts damage equal to 93.75% of the target's HP on one opponent.

The final cinematic boss's attack inflicts damage equal to 96.875% of the target's current HP on one opponent.

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-[]

Gravity removes 25% of a target's HP, while Graviga removes 50%. These attacks can damage adjacent enemies, but do not naturally break the damage limit.

Drill Attack, Holy Lance, Holy Javelin, Partisan, Dimensional Missile, Purgatorial Wave, and Over Drive deal fractional damage to Zack's HP.

MP Destruction Blast and Black Flurry deal fractional damage to Zack's MP. AP Destruction Blast, AP Gravity, AP Graviga, and AP Gravija deal fractional damage to Zack's AP.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Fractional damage is called Proportional damage from FFVII Remake icon Proportional Damage. The Orb of Gravity item reduces the HP of enemies within range by 25%, though it is ineffective against powerful enemies and cannot be used on Hard Mode. It can also be used by Corneo Lackey.

The Rust Drake's Black Hole gradually removes 10% of any nearby party members' current HP.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

Demi takes away 1/4th of the target's current HP, unless used via Rinoa's Angel Wing, which deals x1.25 the target's HP as damage. Demi's damage is capped at 9999.

Diablos deals fractional damage based on his level. At Lv100 his attack deals 100% damage to the target's HP, but the damage is still capped at 9999.

Micro Missiles deals fractional damage depending on the current Crisis Level; Level 1 halves the target's health.

Gravija is an enemy ability that reduces the party's HP by 75%.

Final Fantasy IX[]

Fractional damage abilities do not work against Heavy enemies, which include most bosses.

The fractional damage abilities in the game are:

  • Vivi's Demi, which does 30% of the enemy's maximum health as damage, but can be boosted with Reflect x2.
  • Dagger's Atomos whose power depends on the number of Amethysts in the inventory.
  • Quina's Aqua Breath, which is also Water-elemental, meaning enemies can resist it and the player can boost it with equipment. Aqua Breath deals 25% damage in neutral state. Quina's White Wind, meanwhile, is a fractional healing ability, restoring one third of Quina's health to all party members.
  • Amarant's Demi Shock, which deals 20% of the enemy's maximum HP as damage, and is multi-targeted in Trance.
  • Steiner's Thunder Slash is supposed to deal 19% of the enemy's maximum HP as Thunder damage, but will miss due to a bug.

Final Fantasy X[]

Final Fantasy XIV[]

The BLU ability Missile reduces a target's HP by 50%, while Dimensional Shift reduces enemy HP over an area by 30% and Launcher removes 10%/20%/30%/40%/50% at random. These abilities can deal the same amount of damage if snapshotted simultaneously, effectively able to defeat enemies at full HP. The ability Wild Rage also removes 50% of the caster's HP to damage nearby enemies. If used with exactly 50% HP remaining, the user will be left with 1 HP.

Odin in Urth's Fount uses Valknut, damaging anyone nearby for 60% of their max HP. Eden Prime from Eden's Gate: Resurrection uses Eden's Gravity, damaging all party members for 60% of their max HP, and Dimensional Shift, removing 50%, while Vice of Apathy removes 50% from four party members. Heart Asunder during the intermediary phase in Eden's Verse: Refulgence deals damage equal to 25% of all party members' HP.

Gravity Force, used by the Rank A Elite Mark Vogaal Ja in Middle La Noscea, deals damage equal to 50% of a target's current HP and any other nearby players.

Clionid enemies in The Tempest, after consuming three leeches, can use Buccal Cones to deal damage equal to 100% of a character's HP.

Archaeotania's Tidal Wave in the FATE "The Head, the Tail, the Whole Damned Thing" damages all participants for 65% of their max HP.
