FFWiki Let's Play Idea
this wiki
Forum page

So BH came up with a pretty good idea on the IRC today. He suggested that we make a Final Fantasy Wiki™ Let's Play, basically us recording a game and then commenting over it. We randomly decided on playing FFVI first. I'll be playing the game and recording it, and it was decided that we should Skype in three-ish other people to comment over the game. We will record in one hour slots, and the three other people will rotate with each block. We would update each week with a new 15 minute video (cut form the 1 hour block), and it would be placed on the main page. So, if anyone wants in, leave a comment below. There are a few stipulations:

As of - 00:06, June 27, 2012 (UTC) - Signups are officially closed. - Henryacores^
- Why close off signups? It's not like you've figured how many episodes there are going to be (unless of course you have and all the videos are recorded). And even if you had it's not like you've decided who is in which commentating party when. And even if you have it's not like it's going to matter that much if you make some changes. It's not so hard to re-decide who participates when that people who decide after watching some episodes or only find out about this after it has started cannot join in on later episodes.
- And wiki-committee (or "some guys in IRC") still have veto-power over those involved anyway, so it's not like you'll get random people who only just found it on YouTube joining in. 79.69.206.244 23:34, June 27, 2012 (UTC)
- I got the impression that this is just the signup for FFVI. Best not to have somebody sticking their head in halfway through the World of Ruin that wasn't involved in the rest of the game.(Cat + meow)(RC + Sbox) = FFW 02:34, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- Why? The lineup changes every four episodes. It changes nothing. Only four people are involved per hour of gameplay. All other hours they only watch when uploaded. How is someone getting involved for their first time later than the others going to effect it? JBed 02:42, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- Because yes. People had enough time to signup and there was an effort to announce this project, and we were recieving new participants at a time where we wanted to start picking people from the list to record. If this works out well there may be later chances to participate on iterations of this project, but for now, we're doing this with who stood and decided to join.

- Even though the lineup is random, and we have no idea of the duration of the series, it is and has always been our priority to balance the participation of the involved (excluding the host, obviously). Obviously this implies we won't accept people who want to join during the middle of the project, but we also to take equal measures with people who jump off the boat with no reason. - Henryacores^ 17:31, July 2, 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, I can understand that. I was about to add that although I would not like to participate (I probs wudn't say much; I often-don't/find-it-hard-to speak very clearly; I don't yet have a non-embedded mic) there may be certain portions of certain games where I feel I could add stuff to the discussions but would not like to be called up for any random time because my presence wouldn't be worth it.
- But I'll just comment about that closer to the time (I may have changed my mind by then)--- because other than defending that Umaro is the best character in VI, defending that PS's "slowdown" isn't at all bad, and perhaps a few relevant discussion-topics, there is not much I could add to the VI LP. JBed 17:48, July 2, 2012 (UTC)
- ...I must be honest. That was a very unthoughtful and egotistical attitude from you. This is a project that involves literally a dozen of individuals with their own personal and varied schedules, lifetimes and timezones, and delaying the start of this experimental run (because that's what it is and the great majority is made of newbies to the area), would severely damage its progress and/or success. Giving wings to indecision from the participants would only hamper it further and we really can't allow that, yet. - Henryacores^ 21:03, July 3, 2012 (UTC)
- Huh? What do you think I just said? I said there may be some portions of some game's LPs (that aren't VI) that I may like to participate in.
- However I'll make the decision on whether I want to participate in future LPs when the wiki gets round to doing those LPs. And at such time I will also make the decision of whether I would want to take part as a regular member of the cast, or ask whether it would be acceptable for me to be involved with the commentating on only certain parts of the game and not as a regular commentator.
- I'm not wanting to join anything mid-LP. JBed 21:18, July 3, 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think JBed was talking about contributing to parts of LPs after VI. Speaking of which, when we finish the VI LP (which we will, because it is coming along very nicely ^^), do we just wipe the signups and begin anew? I don't foresee needing a contributor limit, just a time limit, because most games are longer than VI, and three people are needed for each hour. 8bit 22:42, July 3, 2012 (UTC)
- I would say we should clear the sign-ups after every one. It would make more sense (for me) that people sign-up for each LP they want to be involved in instead of putting themselves on the list and having to take themselves off/on depending on if they want to participate in certain ones. JBed 22:50, July 3, 2012 (UTC)

It seems fairer to wipe the slate after each game and allow them to rejoin again if they so wish, and those who don't (they might hate the next game for all you know) can toddle off and go about their business again. It would also breathe some fresh air into the next game LP, and viewers can become more familiar with other users. Tia-Lewise

Yeah, we'll wipe the list after each LP, assuming we get as far as a second LP. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 16:05, July 4, 2012 (UTC)
- I would say we should clear the sign-ups after every one.
That is obviously what has to happen. There's no way we can expect that every single participant on the list will be able, or even want, to be present on later versions of the project, and with the conclusion of an/each iteration of a Let's Play, it's obvious more people will want to be involved after seeing how it actually is. - Henryacores^ 16:09, July 4, 2012 (UTC)
It's good publicity for the Wiki as well as enforcing our 'every contribution counts' mantra if we have a lot of users taking part. I mean, fingers crossed for a second LP, but who knows, this first one might eventually see a lack of contributors due to their own dwindling interest, dead internet, etc. In which case you'll probably have to bring in new users or carry on picking from your existing list. Creating a Party
Edit
So, as of now I've reached the Battle for Narshe. Thus, the game will start letting me pick my party. But I want the wiki to pick which parties I use. So, for each new section of the game, I'll put up a new poll for what characters you want me to take. So this is your chance to give me the illustrious Cyan/Strago/Setzer/Umaro team!
So, you can vote for two different characters (just put your vote under each character's name using #), and then the top four will be joining me for a portion of the game. There will be some exceptions for some of the polls (when I have multiple parties), and I'll put the rules before the list. Also, when we get to the WoR, I'll also let you pick the order I get the characters in. Of course, some characters have to be gotten after others, but you'll be able to roughly plan out the path I take through the second half of the game.
The polls will having a closing time which I'll put up the day before since I need the data to be able to record the game.

For this poll, as this is a multi-character level, everyone wins! The top two will be in a party together, the next three will be in a party, and finally the two losers will be in one final party.

Edit
Well, that sounds like a neato idea. I've been doing this recently with FFTA (the only FF game to date that I've done commentary over), though whether or not I'd feel comfortable with doing it like so. Though do you mean each person would record basically 15 minutes worth themselves from the 1 hour block, or each person would record 1 hour or...? I'm not quite sure I understand that bit.

So the first part is up here! I made it an unlisted video so that the people on the wiki can see it first before we release to the public. I don't have the password for the FFWiki YT yet, so we can't really upload for real until I get that, though.
Highwind: Uh... yeah. Right.
Scathe: It's pretty good, buuuuuuuuuuuut you might wanna adjust the volume of people's mics beforehand, because it seems like somebody (Henry?) is a lot louder than the other three, and I have to turn up to hear them, then Henry(?)'s voice blasts throughout the room. Kinda makes the conversation hard to follow :/ All: Any plans to make a projectspace page and link to it on the main page? No point in uploading it if nobody knows about it. :((

You could announce it in Shinra News when it's on the FFWiki YouTube.
| |||
Pretty nice Scathe. It seems like you have a slight British accent, btw. So I'm assuming you'll finish FFVI before starting on other games (if the project makes it that far)? Looks fun, almost makes me want to do it. --Shockstorm 18:26, June 27, 2012 (UTC)
I second making a project page for the wiki's Let's Play series.
Firstly, ScatheMote, your voice is full of sex.
Secondly, some mics are quite bad. There should probably some prerequisite for having a good-sounding mic. I dislike bad quality audio.
And did you record this on one person? I see now why recording everyone's voices separately may be a better idea. You can then cut out all the noise when the person isn't speaking.
I also think the game should be played with segments in mind, and you might do better if you announce the end of a segment each time, because on YouTube it just feels like you cut off.
Someone comments about not completing FFVI. I think having completed the game should be a prerequisite too. It would be less bad if they actually talked more, but I'm pretty sure the person said like nothing throughout. 79.69.204.125 19:25, June 27, 2012 (UTC)

Well Scathe, I already said on the IRC that I was impressed with the video. And JBed, that would be Daiton. But yes, Henry's voice sounded very echo-y and everyone needs to have at least an equal amount of contribution; though Daiton could have just been quite shy. I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos and your sexy-ass voice.
| |||

Everybody wants you Scathe. ;) I'd like a project page too. Write a little intro where the idea came from and who did what, then maybe embed the videos? Or better just leave it at YouTube and just link?

Yeah, the sound quality is all over the place. If everyone can do so, I think that, while we cast and chat, we should individually record ourselves, and then if someone knows a way to get the files to each other (assuming they're too large to email), slap them together. Should help.
Come vote in the Soul Shrine and take one of my Final Fantasy quizzes.

I once found a place where you can host your own site for free (or subdomain)... files hosted in a ZIP file can be uploaded to it. Most people should be able to record audio in Audacity and export as WAV (though that would be a large filsize), and then ZIP the files. I'm fairly sure there's no site size restrictions. And if there is then you can just get a convertor to convert down to 320kbps MP3.
I'm sure there's also an audio or filehosting website that allows large files for free users somewhere. 79.69.204.125 21:38, June 27, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. Since that was the first time we'd ever done something like that, it's good to hear outsider opinions on what should be changed for the future. I'll just quickly address some people's points and how we can fix them for the future.
| |||
Why would FFWiki LP need a site/subdomain? (That said, lots of those places exist - 000webhost is a pretty good choice, lots of uptime and no ads.) File hosting is probably a better idea for transferring WAV/MP3 files.

I meant people can get their own site/subdomain to upload files. It's the only way I have used that have lacked any sort of format restrictions.
As for videos... I can't remember, but can videos be uploaded from a computer to the wiki? Or are videos only embedded on the wiki from other websites? I forget how videospace works but I think it sucked.
I think "Archive 1" or "Archive/1" works better. It also might make more sense to use divisions of four... like 12. 79.69.206.244 23:06, June 27, 2012 (UTC)
Oh. I know Megaupload is down but ... what about 4shared or Google Docs, neither has restrictions AFAIK.
And to my knowledge you need to import them. In the right-hand side of the Oasis editor (the useless collapsible part) click Video then enter the YouTube URL. Which is useless, of course, since you have to go through YouTube then add to Wikia, and of course it only works in Oasis. Much easier to just use youtube tags.
We could use [Dropbox] for storing and accessing the files. 2GB space free + 500MB for each referral.
- Seconded. I have an account and we can all share a folder to access and alter the files in one place.
Also, Scathe, I'd also like to add that you should put in an intro and a current cast list for that portion of the LP because it felt rather abrupt when the video started. Haven't watched it in full yet, but I'll add something tomorrow once I've finished watching it. Can't wait to start LPing with everybody... Chocolancer 05:21, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
So I made two versions of the main page with the Let's Play on it. Could I have your opinion on perhaps which version is preferable?
Also, Tia says that on a netbook, the YouTube video doesn't properly resize, and it squashes the rest of the page. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this? ScatheMote 15:47, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
Use Oasis. Also the main page has different size restrictions to other pages, so it's going to look suck in your sandbox... for those viewing Oasis. 79.69.206.244 15:54, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I know that. The main page has the same size as Monobook in Oasis. Changed the link to force the Monobook skin. ScatheMote 16:02, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- Monobook's main page DOES NOT view the same in Oasis. This is how it views in the Oasis. 79.69.206.244 16:14, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- The second one is better.Keltainentoukokuu 16:07, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah both of them are broken as JBed illustrated. It just doesn't fit.Keltainentoukokuu 16:21, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- Well then, I'll go and try fixing it now. ScatheMote 16:25, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
File:Whitespace on the Main Page.png. You may need to zoom in a bit, but basically it's what your Sandbox3 looks like in Oasis without the sidebar, and some of my nitpicking.(Cat + meow)(RC + Sbox) = FFW 17:23, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
- User:Catuse167/RSTCYN/Scathe's_Main_Page_with_a_Test. It's almost exactly the same as User:ScatheMote/Sandbox3, except the Let's Play box is smaller so the forum box isn't squished, and the DNC box is moved into the sidebar. (Cat + meow)(RC + Sbox) = FFW 17:33, June 28, 2012 (UTC)
New version without the video embedded. This version is less intrusive, as the video is no longer there taking up space, but perhaps it is harder for people to find. Is the video-less version preferable? ScatheMote 04:17, June 29, 2012 (UTC)
- This is how I originally envisioned it being, so it gets a thumbs up from me. - +DeadlySlashSword+ 04:36, June 29, 2012 (UTC)
- Works for me. Ideally the YouTube box should be transcluded the same way we do the DNC and FI. That way you just have to update the projectspace page, and the whole thing updates.(Cat + meow)(RC + Sbox) = FFW 04:43, June 29, 2012 (UTC)
What's the WOR poll about? Surely you are getting them all anyway? JBed 21:19, June 30, 2012 (UTC)
- It concerns what order Scathe will attempt to retrieve them at. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 21:21, June 30, 2012 (UTC)
- I thought it might be, but isn't it a no-brainer to get Sabin first? And then I'm sure are other "sensibility" rules, such as getting Strago and possibly Gogo near-last. Right? JBed 12:25, July 1, 2012 (UTC)
Ugh stop voting for Shadow in the Zozo/Opera/Magitek section people, this is when he most prone to leaving randomly. I personally have never seen him even make it as far as Zozo. Unless you want to see the commentators rage when he bails as soon as they leave Kohlinghen. --Adonzo 01:10, July 1, 2012 (UTC)
- Ooh, I had no idea that could happen. Now I'm especially happy I voted for him :3. Thanks for the heads up! --Shockstorm 01:56, July 1, 2012 (UTC)
- Seriously guys, stop trying to screw Scathe over, a shitty party is just as painful to watch as it is to play. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 03:18, July 1, 2012 (UTC)
Jonny, Umaro sucks because you can't control him. He just punches stuff and is useless.(Cat + meow)(RC + Sbox) = FFW 03:28, July 1, 2012 (UTC)
- But he throws guys. - +DeadlySlashSword+ 03:32, July 1, 2012 (UTC)
- "Umaro sucks because you can't control him."
- That's funny, because last time I checked Berserked characters were the strongest in almost every game.
- "He just punches stuff and is useless."
- And his punches are lethal... and is not useless.
- He also is the only real way to succeed at DNC.
- He also makes the Tower of Magic much easier, since he breaks the "No attack" rule.
- With his accessories he is even more lethal.
- Half his attacks Crit. Which IIRC penetrates defense somewhat.
- And then there are the other benefits such as not having to search through commands, knowing whenever its his turn he will be dealing mayhem.
- Compare him to Gau who is also uncontrollable, takes time to upgrade, takes a lot of strategy, and is generally unhelpful. JBed 12:15, July 1, 2012 (UTC)
I don't swear very often, but this demands it. O, bollocks*.
So I planned to have tomorrow morning free for the LP. It looked good, as I'd nudged my extended family to stay at home. Unfortunately, there's been a sudden (read, 10 minutes ago) change of plan involving five children deciding they want to go to the city instead. Since a ratio of seven children to two adults is a bad one, I'm obliged to go with them. I'm really, really sorry. It's possible that it might rain and we'll stay at home, but that's uncertain. We could try recording at 23:00 UTC instead - but it's probably too late to reorganise. I suppose we'll just have to grab someone off IRC and I'll stay out of the LP. Have fun guys. I'll be cheering you along. :) *Yes, that's how I swear. Shush.

TALK - This Land is Made of... LOVE AND PEACE!! LOVE AND PEACE!! ツ:
Yes, it was a great tragedy that Yuany couldn't join us last night. But so far the second act seems to have been recorded well. There were a limited number of casualties.

Okay, so the official version (not any different, just on the FFWiki account) of the first part is up right here! The project will update Wed/Sat, so stayed tuned for new episodes!

Updates
Edit
With the increase of video duration at the FFWiki account, we can now upload a full part, or the one-hour episode, at once, instead of uploading 15-minute fragments of the same part two times per week.
However, that way we can't keep the same upload rate (twice a week), which leads to the changing the upload pace to a fortnightly update of the Let's Play. So, the only real change would be a video more similar to the original recording (since we record one-hour blocks and ignore the 15-minute cut), preventing mid-sentence/word/topic cuts.
Feedback? Biweekly one-hour blocks versus 15-minute blocks every wednesdays and saturdays. - Henryacores^ 16:27, July 9, 2012 (UTC)
- When I watch videos on YouTube, if it's longer than 15 minutes I usually ignore it.
- I can't imagine myself watching half-an-hour or an hour of an LP in one sitting. From the perspective of someone watching as they are uploaded I do not like the idea of any longer than fifteen minutes. JBed (talk) 16:33, July 9, 2012 (UTC)
- Hour-long video segments are not going to be convienent at all for our readerbase. Cat (meow ∙ hunt) 19:31, July 9, 2012 (UTC)
Stealing a march on Faethin...
Edit
Feavyre mentioned that he'd like to appropriate another song, which we could perhaps sing in the last episode. In the last recording, I compared Celes to the Modern Major General of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. Here is the result of this and a long commute...:
I am the Very Model of a Gestahlian General
I've very well-acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I can catch every item Yuffie, Edge and Shadow ever hurled,
When I have learnt to stab my boss, is not good job security,

Am I to assume these are the final lyrics? I'm due to start your recording in the next few days; Scathe says he would like the finished piece by the end of September, so I have plenty of time.
| |||
Yes, unless anyone can think of some modifications to better fit the meter or improve the grammar. The awful "Though I'll insist I of opera floozies and their kin deplore" stands out.
8bit said he'll play the piano for us, so you might want to have a chat with him first. How are we handling the chorus, by the way?
I like it, and don't think though I'll insist of I of opera floozies and their kin deplore is that bad, honestly. My one complaint (and I think it's too late to fix, since Scathe already sorted out the chorus recording) is that it's weird to have the chorus switch between third person and first person. Just a thought :/
