Flail (フレイル, Fureiru?), also known as Chain Flail, is a recurring weapon in the series. It is often a powerful weapon when first obtained, but is quickly surpassed by others. It is often found around the beginning of the game to about the quarter point. More often than not, it allows the user to deal full damage from the back row, and is usually equippable by White Mages or other spell casting classes.
The Flail is a low-level staff that allows the user to attack from the back row, and can be used by Freelancers, White Mages, Red Mages, Oracles, Chemists, and Mimes. It can be bought in Karnak for 780 gil or stolen from Atomos, and provides 13 Attack and a Hit Rate of 16.
Chain Flail is the weakest mace in the game, though it is still a rather powerful weapon when first acquired. It has an attack power of 86, and can be used by Gogo, Terra, Celes, Strago, and Relm. It can be either bought for 2,000 gil in the World of Balance in Narshe before acquiring the Blackjack, or in Thamasa, or stolen from Wartpuck.
The Flail is Selphie's starting weapon, and if the player so chooses, can acquire it at a Junk Shop by using two M-Stone Pieces and a Bomb Fragment and 100 gil. It provides 12 Attack and 98 Hit rate and its weapon description is: Even a weakling can cause serious damage with this type of Nunchaku but they're also hard to use. This Flail has long been a favorite for beginners.
In the PlayStation translation the Iron Flail is known simply as Flail. It is available to purchase from Chapter 2 for 1,200 gil and provides 9 Attack.
The Chain Flail is the game's weakest flail, it can be bought found at Kett's and it has an attack power of 9.
The Chain Flail is a level 50 exclusive weapon for Terra, and provides +35 Attack, +26 Bravery, and Magic Defense +30%. It can be traded for at the shop for 15,460 gil, a Healing Staff, three Thorny Lumbers, and two Amplification Shards.
Chain Flail returns as a level 30 Exclusive weapon for Terra that provides +41 Bravery, +38 Attack, and +10% Physical Defense. It can be obtained by trading 61,000 gil, Healing Staff, Scarletite, and five Girl's Desires.
