Fires of War (略奪のコンパス, Ryakudatsu no Konpasu?, lit. Compass of Plunder) is a recurring ability in the Final Fantasy series. It is Balthier's trademark Quickening, first appearing as his level 1 Quickening in Final Fantasy XII.
Fires of War is Balthier's level 1 Quickening. As with all level 1 Quickenings, it deals damage equal to a random number between 1 and 90 multiplied by Balthier's Strength, and costs one Mist Charge to execute.
Balthier's card depicting his promotional poster with Fran can use Fires of War. For the discard of another Balthier card and one Wind CP, Balthier can't be chosen as the target of the opponent's effects and gains Pre-emptive Strike until the end of turn.
Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products.
