Vivi

Vivi casting Fire in Final Fantasy IX.

Fire (ファイア, Faia?), also known as Fire1 and Fire 1, is the most common elemental Black Magic spell in Final Fantasy history and is the basic Fire-elemental spell.

Since its appearance at the start of the series, Fire has appeared in almost every series title as a magic ability. It is generally the first spell a Black Mage learns in titles. In addition, jobs such as the Red Mage and Magus can utilize Fire.

Overview[]

Fire is the most elementary of black magic spells.

Fire from FFVI Pixel Remaster

Terra using Fire in Final Fantasy VI.

Like Blizzard and Thunder, Fire is one of the three primary elemental Black Magics, appearing since the original Final Fantasy. In most titles, Fire is one of the default magics available for players to purchase or learn. When used, it deals a small amount of fire-elemental damage to targets. Its appearance tends to vary, with most titles having the spell unleashing a small burst of flames on the targets, but some titles have had the attack occasionally unleash a fireball. Undead and plants are usually weak to fire magic throughout the series. With the exception of Final Fantasy XII, Fire is often the counterpart to the Blizzard spell.

FFIV Rydia melting Ice GBA

Rydia using Fire to melt the wall of ice in Final Fantasy IV.

Fire is also a spell commonly used to enhance character physical attacks in some fashion, with the common method of enchantment being the Fire Spellblade attack. Later titles would also have some characters using Fire as part of their special attacks, such as Seifer's No Mercy Limit Break from Final Fantasy VIII, and Lulu's Fire Fury Overdrive from Final Fantasy X.

In addition, Fire serves a small narrative purpose in some titles - Rydia's fear of the spell in Final Fantasy IV, and Vivi Ornitier's use of the spell to traverse the passages of the Ice Cavern in Final Fantasy IX.

In all titles featuring the spell, Fire includes upgraded forms with their names deriving from the series's recurring Magic tier system. The following are the prominent recurring upgraded forms:

Firaga from FFVII Remake

Cloud Strife using Firaga in Final Fantasy VII Remake.

  • Fira (ファイラ, Faira?) - Serves as the second tier of Fire, inflicting moderate fire damage to targets. In later titles, Fira would deal damage to multiple targets within an area of effect.
  • Firaga (ファイガ, Faiga?, lit. Figa) - Serves as the third tier of Fire, inflicting heavy fire damage to targets. It often serves as the strongest fire-elemental spell in earlier titles, with later titles featuring upgraded tiers. In later entries, Firaga began to have the property to inflict damage within an area of effect.
  • Firaja (ファイジャ, Faija?, lit. Fija) - Serves as the fourth tier of Fire, inflicting massive fire damage to enemies. Originally appearing in Final Fantasy Tactics, it serves as the strongest fire-elemental spell in most newer entries. In some titles, Firaja is an enemy exclusive spell.
  • Flare (フレア, Furea?) - Serves as the ultimate form of Fire magic, often dealing heavy to massive fire-elemental damage to targets. Though Flare has existed alongside Fire since the original Final Fantasy, it has served as the final fire spell available to players in Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy XI, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
  • Meltdown (メルトン, Meruton?, lit. Melton) - Serves as an alternate ultimate form of Fire magic, often dealing heavy to massive fire-elemental damage to multiple targets. Meltdown has served as the strongest form of Fire magic in Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy Dimensions II.

In addition, several titles have featured unique or alternate upgraded forms of Fire. These spells include unique properties, or are used by specific jobs:

FFIX Pyro

Pyro in Final Fantasy IX

  • Pyro (ファイダ, Faida?, lit. Fida) - A unique Fire spell that appears as an SFX ability in Final Fantasy IX, dealing 0 damage to targets. Its Japanese name serves as a reference of the "-da" tier often used in earlier titles for White Magics.
  • Fire I - XVI (ファイアLv.1 - ファイアLv.16, Faia Lv.1 - Faia Lv.16?, lit. Fire Lv.1 - Fire Lv.16) - Due to the unique progression system of Final Fantasy II, there are sixteen levels of Fire. Each have increased potency, while also having unique animations every four levels.
  • Fire II - Fire VI (ファイアII - ファイアIV, Faia II - Faia VI?)- Upgraded forms of Fire that exclusively appear in Final Fantasy XI. Due to the -ra and -ga tiers in the title being used exclusively for area-of-effect versions, Fire serves as a single target fire-elemental damage spell, with its upgraded version using Roman numerals to signify their enhanced rank.
  • Verfire (ヴァルファイア, Varufaia?) - A unique version of Fire that appears as a Red Mage Black Mana spell in Final Fantasy XIV. It deals fire damage to a single foe in combat.
  • Dark Fire (ダークファイア, Dāku Faia?) - An "evil" variant of the first tier Fire spell that appears in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XIV. It often deals fire-elemental damage to a target, while also inflicting several status ailments.
  • Tri-Fire (3連ファイア, Sanren Faia?, lit. Triple Fire) - An alternate upgraded form of Fire that appears in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII as a Magic Materia for Zack Fair. It unleashes three fireballs that independently seek out targets.

Non-Final Fantasy guest appearances[]

Other Square Enix titles[]

Chrono Trigger Fire

Fire in Chrono Trigger

Fire has appeared in other Square Enix titles as an ability, referencing the Final Fantasy version of the spell.

The original Game Boy versions of the first three entries of the SaGa series (known as the Final Fantasy Legend trilogy in the west) include Fire/Fire 1 as the recurring fire-elemental spell, with its upgrade being Fire 2 (ファイア, Faiga?, lit. Figa) in the third entry. The Japanese-exclusive 3D remakes of the second and third titles include several upgrades for Fire - Fira, Firaga, Hell Fire, Fire Storm, and Crimson Flare.

Fire also appears in Chrono Trigger as a tech of Lucca, allowing her to deal fire-elemental damage to a single target. In addition, the spell's upgrade, Fire II (ファイア, Faiga?, lit. Figa), is a tech for both Lucca and Magus. Both spells also appear in the Chrono series's spiritual successor, I Am Setsuna, as a spritnite ability for Kir, even carrying over the same suffixes in Japanese.

Ehrgeiz Fire Materia
KHII Fire

Fire in Kingdom Hearts II.

Fire appears as a magic spell within the Forsaken Dungeon of Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring. The Basic version shoots a small fireball and consumes one Magic Stone when used, while the Ultra version shoots several homing fireballs depending on the amount of enemies currently present, it consumes three Magic Stones when used.

Fire, together with its higher tiers Fira and Firaga, appears as a recurring magic spell in the Kingdom Hearts series. When performing the spell in most titles, the caster unleashes a homing fireball directly from their Keyblade to damage a target. In Kingdom Hearts II, Fire instead creates a small wall of flames around the user.

As the successor of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, Fire is featured as a recurring Black Magic spell in the Bravely series. Fire is often one of the first spells obtained for the Black Mage job in each title. The spell can also be used by Red Mages in titles associated with the first Bravely Default.

Non-Square Enix titles[]

Fire has also made cameo appearances or has been referenced in some titles not associated with Square Enix. Noctis can use Fire in the form of his Fire Blast move in Tekken 7.
