Fugly image of Cecil

The old, unofficial artwork of Cecil Harvey made available when Final Fantasy IV was first released for the SNES in America. This is a very inaccurate depiction of said character.

The legendary swordsman Gilgamesh

The Master Creatures' figurine of Gilgamesh, from their third set of Final Fantasy characters. First appearing in Final Fantasy V as Exdeath's somewhat bombastic right-hand man, Gilgamesh became popular with the fanbase for both his quotes and theme song, "Clash on the Big Bridge". He has since appeared in multiple Final Fantasy games as a summon, character or bonus boss, holding a unique position in the series in that each incarnation is implied to be the same person. As befitting his status as a sword collector, here he appears wielding weaponry from many games, including the worthless Excalipoor which he constantly discovers instead of the much desired Excalibur. He also wears the Genji Armour, which can often be stolen from him by the player.

Arrival at Eden

Artwork of the floating city of Eden in Final Fantasy XIII. The capital of Cocoon, the boat-like Eden drifts in the sky above the larger world, which in turn is set above the land of Gran Pulse. Eden, powered by a fal'Cie of the same name, is so bright that it is like a constellation to those on Cocoon below. From Eden's seat of power rules the Sanctum, under Primarch Galenth Dysley. In this image, Eden is the ship in blue, while the airship hurtling downwards through a Pulsian gate is feasibly operated by Lightning and her l'Cie friends. In this picture, the ancient War of Transgressions between Cocoon and Pulse is captured in its latest incarnation.

Nobuo Uematsu

A photograph of musician and composer Nobuo Uematsu. Until Final Fantasy X, Uematsu was responsible for the composition of all the music in the main Final Fantasy series, and thus is the composer of many of the series' most memorable tracks. Since then, he has worked as a freelancer and has contributed to the soundtracks of Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XII, and is currently the sole composer for Final Fantasy XIV. Uematsu's composing style is diverse, ranging from classical pieces and operas, to jazz and rock. He is also the keyboardist for The Black Mages, who play rock and progressive metal arrangements of his Final Fantasy works.

Darkness and Starlight

The album art cover of progressive metal band the Black Mages' third studio album, The Black Mages III: Darkness and Starlight, featuring an unknown couple, presumably the lovers from the opera "Maria and Draco". The album featured a full-length symphonic metal version of the opera, which featured the Mages on vocals for the first time, and the second original composition not featured in any entry of the series: the track LIFE ~ In memory of KEITEN ~. The man depicted in the cover bears a resemblance to Edward Chris von Muir from Final Fantasy IV.

FFG FWol Jobs

A wallpaper of job class illustrations by Akihiko Yoshida, for the game Hikari no 4 Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden. Hikari no 4 Senshi was designed as a deliberate homage to the earlier Final Fantasy games, particularly the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy III. Its Job system, consisting of more than twenty classes, revolves around the use of the "Crown System", with different Jobs being associated with different hats. Aside from old favorites like Knight, Black Mage and White Mage, Hikari no 4 Senshi also introduces unique classes including Traveler, Playboy, and Storyteller.

FFXIII Lindblum

Artwork of the airship Lindblum, from the upcoming game Final Fantasy XIII. The Lindblum references the city of Final Fantasy IX in name and likeness; it is a gigantic carrier ship that houses hundreds of lesser airships of the Sanctum Skyfleet, much like the Lindblum of Final Fantasy IX was a docking place for the airships of Cid Fabool IX. The airship Lindblum's two wings can form a sort of cocoon for protection, or unfold to allow for other craft to dock with it. It is captained by Cid Raines and is a visitable location in Final Fantasy XIII.

Basch lends Argas a hand

Marchioness Argas loses her arm at the hands of Basch, taken from the manga version of Final Fantasy XII. Argas plotted to kill King Raminas as part of the Neo-Rozarrian faction's plan that sought to sway Nabradia and Dalmasca to their side against the Archadian Empire. Basch, having learnt of their intentions, posed as the king in his bed and leapt out of it at the last moment, severing the Marchioness' right arm in one swift stroke.

Screenshot of Red XIII and his father, the petrified Seto, in Final Fantasy VII. The two are overlooking the Cave of the Gi, in front of which Seto sacrificed his life against the Gi people; their poisoned arrows turned his body to stone. Final Fantasy VII was the first Final Fantasy to feature CG cutscenes such as this one, with graphics such as Red XIII's tail far superior to complementary 3D models.

Pre-rendered background of Memoria the second-to-last dungeon in Final Fantasy IX, depicting the whole party as they stand before the entrance, from left to right, Amarant, Zidane, Steiner, Dagger, Eiko, Freya, Quina and Vivi. Memoria, formed from the gathering of all the memories of Gaia, was formed after Kuja destroyed Terra by means of entering a state of Trance.

Really. Nothing fantastical about it.

A perfectly normal well in the NES version of the first Final Fantasy. Located in the city of Cornelia (then Coneria), this well disappoints those who would expect something special at the bottom. This is a nod to another Square Enix series, Dragon Quest, which featured generally more interesting wells, whose depths concealed great treasures. Sadly, Cornelia's watering hole is, in fact, just an ordinary well.

The result of 30 h of gameplay

The caption of a screen during a session of Final Fantasy XI, depicting the superboss Absolute Virtue's use of the special job ability Benediction. After a 30-hour-long marathon in March 2006, in which a party managed to bring the boss down to 51% HP for the first time ever in the game's history, the monster then proceeded to use the ability and go back to 99% HP. The party eventually gave up.

Ff10-2-cast

Artwork by Tetsuya Nomura depicting the main characters of the cast of Final Fantasy X-2. Appearing clockwise: Nooj, Paine, Lenne, Shuyin and Rikku, with Yuna occupying the centre. For the sequel, both Yuna and Rikku, the only characters appearing in Final Fantasy X, were given a completely new design. This decision was highly controverted and remains one of the most common causes of division between fans and disparagers of X-2.

Emperor of Heaven

Emperor of Hell

PSP sprites of Emperor Mateus, ruler of the kingdom of Palamecia in Final Fantasy II. Though meeting defeat at the hands of Firion and his friends, Mateus spurns death and absorbs the powers of the afterlife to be crowned the Emperor of Hell in the main storyline and the Emperor of Heaven in Soul of Rebirth. The Emperor's split is also emulated in the dungeons leading up to each respective final battle. The depths of Jade Passage and Pandaemonium are traversed to reach Mateus' demonic form, while their respective mirror images Raqia and Arubboth are the stairways to his seraphic throne.

CG render of Terra Branford as featured in Dissidia Final Fantasy. Delita sees the higher echelons as his own keys to peace, involving Princess Ovelia Atkascha in his schemes. Ramza, meanwhile, keeps the safety of his sister, Alma Beoulve, in priority. During the storyline, their paths weave back and forth, the actions of each hero helping to determine the fate of the other.

Screenshot in Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings of the Galbana's approach to the Purvama of Lemurés, the airborne, archipelago home of the Aegyl. The closest island with two skystone fronds is Zephyr, the Windward Isles; Tormelados, Isle of the Megalith, lies to the left, the Muruc Cashuac Skysea cascades water endlessly from the sky just behind Zephyr, and the looming spires of Arda, Heaven's Pillar are seen faintly in the distance. The quality of this in-game video is impressively close to a similar artwork, capturing many details of the Aegyl cities etched out on the rock as well as the unending azure of the sky.
