Me!? I'm a master chocobo catcher. Chocobos are my expertise.

Chocoboy

Chocoboy is a non-player character in Final Fantasy VIII. A young boy who hangs out in the Chocobo Forests around the world, he helps Squall catch chocobos.

Chocoboy is one of the few people who can still be found in the endgame.

Gameplay[]

Catching chocobos[]

Realizing that Squall wants to ride a chocobo, Chocoboy sets up business and charges him for advice and methods to catch one. To catch a chocobo, Squall must first call the chicobo—the baby chocobo. When the mother chocobo realizes that the lone chicobo is missing, she will come out to find it. Chocoboy gives Squall a ChocoWhis, a whistle which can both detect chicobos using its ChocoSonar and call the chicobos using its ChocoZiner.

Chocoboy also sells Gysahl Greens for 600 gil and hints to find chicobos for 100 gil. He can also catch one for a more hefty price. His method is more unconventional, to say the least.

At the Holy Grounds[]

At the Chocobo Forest in the Grandidi Forest in Esthar, Chocoboy confesses that it took him three years to find the Chocobo Holy Grounds. He tries to hide some Magic Stones from Squall, but the mother chocobo recovers them and gives them to Squall to congratulate him for his success in finding the Holy Grounds. After witnessing the chocobos' dance, he bids his farewell.

Triple Triad[]

Chocoboy is a Triple Triad player, but he does not hold any rare cards. He can only be challenged in the Forest of Solitude, where he plays with the Centra region's rules. Prompting him to play cards is actually part of the puzzle to find the treasure there, as it also opens the option to ask him to move, which is required since he is standing where the magic stones are buried in that forest. However, the player is better off not playing cards with him because of the absence of rewards and because he leaves the forest after the treasure is found, making it annoying to win back any rare cards lost to him. Any such card is shown in the menu as being located in "Chocobo Forest", even after Chocoboy is gone. If he disappears while holding a rare card, the player can still get it back from the Card Club if they complete that sidequest before the point of no return.

Etymology[]

"Choco" is short for "chocobo". The name "chocobo" derives from a Japanese brand of chocolate malt ball by Morinaga, ChocoBall (チョコボール, Chokobōru?). The mascot for this product is Kyoro-chan (キョロちゃん?), a bird who says "kweh".

食う / くう / kuu is a rough way to say "eat", whose volitional casual form is 食え / くえ / kue ("let's scoff 'em down!"), leading to Kweh!
