Final Fantasy VI PlayStation Bestiary entry

Valigarmanda, also known as Tritoch or Frozen Esper, is a boss in Final Fantasy VI fought in the snowfields over Narshe in the World of Ruin. In the first battle event involving Valigarmanda in the Narshe Mines, it is called Frozen Esper on the GBA release. Defeating it opens the path to the Yeti's Cave where Umaro lives and the party gains the Valigarmanda magicite.

Battle[]

The Valigarmanda has high Defense and cannot be harmed physically, except with weapons and abilities that ignore Defense, like the Valiant Knife, Fixed Dice, Drill, and Ultima Weapon. It is also immune to all elements except Fire Fire. Offensively, Valigarmanda's only damaging spell is Blizzaga, which is weak.

Strategy[]

As a boss, the battle is fairly straightforward. Fira and Firaga spells are the easy counters to melt the esper's prison of ice, as do abilities that ignore defense such as Tools, Blitzes, Throw, and Bushido.
