Perform black magic.

Description

Black Magic, also known as Black, is the primary ability of the Black Mage from Final Fantasy V. This class of magic is purely offensive, containing numerous spells that induce status effects or cause magical damage. It is disabled if the user is silenced. Black Magic is purchased at shops in different towns and is divided into six levels. The Red Mage's Red Magic ability can also use the Black Magic spells up to level 3.

Obtained[]

Black Magic is equipped on Black Mages by default. After leveling up the Black Mage job, a character can have the Black Magic ability equipped on any other job and use any Black Magic spell whose associated level has been attained by the Black Mage. Therefore, to be able to use all Black Magic spells as a non-Black Mage, a character must level their Black Mage job up to level 6. Black Magic is the primary ability for Black Mages, who can use all Black Magic spells without the need to attain a spell's associated level first.

The Black Magic ability requires 10 AP for level 1, 20 for level 2, 30 for level 3, 50 for level 4, 70 for level 5, and 100 for level 6.

Mechanics[]

Ff5Black

Black Magic skillset is locked if the user has silence, or in the right side of Fork Tower where magic usage is forbidden. Multi-targeting spreads the damage around but deals less damage per target; spells that automatically target everyone do not suffer this penalty. The spells that inflict targets with status ailments have their hit rate reduced instead when multi-targeted.

If the target absorbs the attacking element, it is healed instead of damaged. If it has elemental immunity, the attack misses. If the target resists the attacking element, the spell does less damage and if it is weak against the element, the spell can do supreme damage as it even ignores the target's Magic Defense.

Flare has a unique damage formula that disregards most of the target's Magic Defense.

Any job equipped with Black Magic Level 1 will gain their character's base Freelancer Magic +16 if their default stat is lower. For each additional Black Magic level up to level 6, the Magic bonus is increased by 3 per level, for a maximum of +31 Magic at Black Magic Level 6. Upon mastery, Freelancers and Mimes gain the Black Mage's base Magic unless they already have a higher base from another mastered job.
