The Samurai Soul, also known as KatanaSoul or KatnSoul, is a boss in Final Fantasy VI. It is fought in the Ancient Castle in a side passage and guards one of the most useful relics. Despite what its name might suggest, the Samurai Soul is not an undead enemy.

Battle[]
Samurai Soul attacks by using Gale Cut and by throwing Flame Scrolls, Water Scrolls, and Lightning Scrolls, doing heavy damage to the entire party every turn. If struck by magic three times, it counters by throwing a powerful katana, then using Gil Toss. If attacked normally six times, it uses Assassin Blade, an Instant Death attack that ignores immunity. After enough time passes, the Samurai Soul gains the image, reflect, and haste statuses, making it even more deadly.
The Samurai Soul drops the valuable Master's Scroll when defeated, a relic that lets the holder attack four times in a single turn.
Strategy[]
Though its list of abilities is impressive, the Samurai Soul has two crippling weaknesses. It can be poisoned, so using Bio on it will eventually cause it to take several thousand damage a turn. It is also vulnerable to confuse, which causes Samurai Soul to use Assassin Blade on itself, killing it. Sketching it with Relm may also work to use Assassin Blade.

Etymology[]
Samurai were the military nobility of medieval and early-modern Japan. They were not just great swordsmen, but also powerful horse archers and martial artists of other fields. Though their status was that above commoners, samurai were bound to forms of etiquette and a way of life known as Bushido, stressing honor to one's devoted and preparing oneself in the face of death.
It has also been known as Katana Soul. Katana is the Japanese word for "sword", but is also commonly used to denote a group of sword types originating from Japan. They bear a distinctive curved, single edged blade with a flat shaped guard, a simple handle wrapped in cloth, and subtle designs that distinguish their identities from other blades. Most are named based on the blacksmith who forged them.
The soul, in many religious, philosophical, psychological, and mythological traditions, is the incorporeal and, in many conceptions, immortal essence of a person, living thing, or object.
The monster's name is unusually spelled entirely in katakana much like the title of Samurai Spirits, the fighting game franchise known in the West as Samurai Showdown. It is likely a reference to it.
