Aranea is an enemy in Final Fantasy X-2 first encountered as a boss on floor 20 of Via Infinito. It was formerly Maester Wen Kinoc, who was murdered by Seymour Guado. Beyond floor 81, it starts appearing in random encounters.

Aranea can inflict Stop on all party members simultaneously. Its attacks are not strong, except for its bite attack, which ignores defense, but the Stop effect lasts for about five turns. Its strongest attack when it is Oversouled involves him eating a character and spitting them out.
In Oversoul, Aranea gains access to level 3 elemental spells, Dual Catalyst, and Tempus Laxit. In addition, it can rob the player of 10,000 gil with 10000-Gil-Smoosher.
Strategy[]
Aranea is the easiest of the Via Infinito guardians; a Dark Knight's Darkness ability is useful, and having an Alchemist healing is also a good idea.
Another way to quickly beat Aranea is to employ a captured Dark Elemental equipped with the Wring and Minerva's Plate accessories, along with the Black Mage dressphere, Megiddo Garment Grid, and First Strike. The Dark Elemental will very likely cast either Flare or Ultima on its turn, which occurs very quickly due to the drastically reduced casting time for its Black Magic spells, along with the Wring's innate Auto-Haste effect. Without Break Damage Limit, each spell from the Dark Elemental should do 9,999 damage, and two spells are enough to defeat Aranea in normal form (four in Oversoul form).
Creature Creator[]
Aranea becomes available for capture by way of a Trap pod L in Bevelle after it is defeated in Via Infinito. It comes with Ailment Def. (immunity to all negative status effects) and can use Spider Bite and Sticky End, as with Boris.
Fiend Arena[]
To enter the Aeon Cup in the Fiend Arena, the player must capture and raise the story levels of eight special creatures. These creatures will immediately be available to be released upon capture, however, what the player has to do is raise their story levels by three and then release them. This will change that particular creature into an aeon. Aranea is one of these eight creatures, capable of being changed into Anima.
Aranea appears in Grand Cup: Hard and the Fiend World Cup, as part of the Lady Tarantula team. It is exactly the same as in Via Infinito, and there is a chance that the player may fight it instead of Mega Tonberry (Tonberry the Ripper) or Omega Weapon.
