The Hellfire Chasm is one of the four bonus dungeons in the Dawn of Souls version of the original Final Fantasy, and one of the five in the 20th Anniversary Edition and iOS/Windows Phone versions. Hellfire Chasm does not appear in the Android or Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster versions.

It is located in the southeast end of the swampy island and directly south of the cave of Bahamut in Cardian Islands. It is accessible after defeating Marilith in Mount Gulg. It is longer than Earthgift Shrine with ten floors, but shorter than Lifespring Grotto and Whisperwind Cove. The Archfiends from Final Fantasy IV appear here.

All floors of the Chasm bar B5 and B10 are selected at random from floors based on the overworld, Mount Gulg, the Waterfall Cavern, and a unique fire shrine environment. The Mount Gulg and shrine maps feature HP-draining lava tiles, necessitating constant healing. Scarmiglione and Cagnazzo appear on floor 5, though the player may only battle one during each run through the dungeon. Likewise, either Barbariccia or Rubicante may be battled on floor 10.

In the Hellfire Chasm, treasure lists are static on each floor, but the number of chests in each floor varies, and these are randomly sorted for each run.

Musical themes[]

In the 20th Anniversary version, a remix of the Final Fantasy IV boss theme plays while fighting the bosses in this dungeon. Previously, "Boss Battle B" was used for that purpose in the Dawn of Souls version.
