FFXI Polearm 9A

Spears (, Yari?), also known as polearms and lances, are a recurring weapon type throughout the Final Fantasy series. They are associated with the Dragoon job class, and usually grant bonus damage when using the Jump ability. Recurring spears include Abel's Lance and Kain's Lance, Longinus, and Gungnir.

Polearms are two-handed weapons, having high damage but medium to high weapon delay. They inflict piercing damage. The Dragoon, Paladin, Samurai and Warrior job classes can equip polearms, and the Dragoon job can utilize the Jump ability. Polearms are varied, but generally fall into three categories:

  • Spears have the lowest delays and are equippable by all four jobs listed above.
  • Couses have intermediate delays and are equippable by Dragoon, Samurai, and Warrior.
  • Lances have the highest delays and are Dragoon only.
Notable spears include:
  • Gungnir
  • Gae Assail

By equipping the appropriate license any character can gain access to spears in the original version. In the Zodiac versions, only Uhlan wields spears, and spears can hit flying enemies.

Spears are two-handed weapons, with the strongest, and one of the most coveted weapons, being the Zodiac Spear. Spears' damage is calculated based on the character's strength, the weapon's attack, and the enemy's defense. All spears add 8 to evasion and can knockback enemies. Spears are among the faster weapons with 2.14s charge and 1.2s action time, second only to daggers and ninja swords.

The damage formula for spears is:

Spears use the Strength damage formula. Damage depends on the weapon, the user's Strength and character level. The characters' stats can vary by up to 30%, but Strength varies 10%; Vaan, Balthier, and Basch have the highest strength.

Spears and a variety of other polearms fall under the Lancer's Arm Lancer's Arms category, and are used by both Lancer Lancers and Dragoon Dragoons. In addition to these, Fisher Fishers can use a spearfishing gig as their secondary tool.

Notable lancer's arms:

Final Fantasy XV[]

Polearms-ffxv-dmgtypeicon

Polearms can be equipped by Noctis and Ignis as his secondary arm. Polearms can be airstepped with and thus wielded while midair, as homage to Dragoons. Aranea Highwind wields a spear unique to her, the Stoss Spear.

Forward + Attack: Noctis performs a thrusting attack, and at the end of the "thrust" he will do an airstep that can link into a plunging attack depending on positioning.

Side + Attack: Noctis swings the polearm in a wider area instead of stabbing with it.

Back + Attack: Noctis performs a backflip attack that can lead into an air combo. If the player releases the thumbstick before leading into an air combo, Noctis will perform the Full Thrust technique that was seen in Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae.

If attacking an enemy directly from above with a spear, Noctis can descend upon them like a Dragoon.

The royal arm Trident of the Oracle functions as a polearm gameplay-wise.

Final Fantasy Tactics[]

Dragoons equip polearms (spears in the original version). Unlike close-ranged weapons, spears hit two units instead of one. By accessing the "Equip Polearms" support ability, other job classes can use the polearm as well, but not the Jump ability.
