FFXIV Trick Attack

Trick Attack in Final Fantasy XIV.

Pretend to let your guard down, then surprise enemies with a quick slash. Stopped foes take extra damage.

Trick Attack (だまし討ち, Damashiuchi?) is a recurring skill appear in Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy XI[]

Trick Attack is the partner of Sneak Attack. It is available at level 30 for thieves or at level 60 for those choosing thief as a Support Job. When used, the ability will create a special status effect that signifies the next melee attack is a trick attack. Trick attack deal critical damage, like sneak attack, and the damage is modified by the thief's strength and agility score. Sneak attack and trick attack stack with each other. When using together, the thief has a chance to do truly massive damage, especially when using a compatible weapon skill.

Trick attack has one other very notable effect. It is used for the transferring of enmity. When another player stands directly between the thief performing a trick attack and the enemy, the thief essentially "tricks" the creature into thinking that the player in-between did all of the damage and will most likely turn to attack him instead of whatever it was doing. It is this reason that the common First Provoke strategy was developed for parties with a thief.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Trick Attack is a level 18 Rogue ability, notable for inflicting a flat Vulnerability Up debuff in comparison to other jobs' selective Resistance Down debuffs, as well as stacking with them. It delivers an attack with 240 potency, or 400 potency if performed from the enemy's rear, and if performed from the rear it will also inflict the aforementioned Vulnerability Up debuff. It serves as a core ability for Rogue and later Ninja, with the Ninjutsu ability Suiton temporarily negating its requirement that the Rogue or Ninja be Hidden to use Trick Attack. The role action True North can also be used to negate the directional requirement.
