Final Fantasy VI PlayStation Bestiary entry

The Red Dragon, formerly called Red Drgn, is a boss in Final Fantasy VI. It is one of the eight legendary dragons, and is the dragon of the Fire Fire element. The Red Dragon is found in the Phoenix Cave, near the end of the dungeon.

The Red Dragon is re-fought in the Flame Labyrinth area of the Dragons' Den bonus dungeon in the Advance and the discontinued 2014 releases. Both versions of Red Dragon can be further re-fought in the Soul Shrine, as with most bosses in the game.

Battle[]

First battle[]

The Red Dragon uses fire-elemental spells, casting Fira and Fireball for much of the battle. When its HP drops to 10,240, the Red Dragon casts Flare and Firaga. It has an equal chance of using Southern Cross, Flare Star, or Level 4 Flare on regular intervals, the latter of which can be avoided at the correct levels. If the player attempts to use reflect, the Red Dragon will use Eraser to remove it from the entire party.

Strategy[]

Blizzaga and Flare spells are effective, as is having Shadow throw Tridents. Poisoning it early in the fight is also a viable option; it will eventually kill the dragon even if the party is forced into recovery-based tactics.

Second battle[]

Red Dragon uses its life force to power itself up, and cannot be harmed by the player's attacks. Instead, the Red Dragon dies if the party survives long enough for its life force to be completely drained. The dragon will constantly use powerful spells, such as Flare, Flare Star, and Meltdown, and its physical attack inflicts high damage and can be used several times in a row. It uses a new special attack, called Red Fang, which inflicts death. Before it dies, it casts Ultima followed by Flare in a final attack.

When the player wins, the Seal of Fire shatters, and the player receives Terra's ultimate weapon, the Apocalypse.

Strategy[]

Shell, protect, reflect, and Celes's Runic are vital, as is regular healing with Curaga. Equipping Flame Shield allows the wielder to absorb fire-based damage. Casting Reraise on all party members is a good idea. It is also possible to use Quick and wait until the Red Dragon's timer is up.

The sprite that is shared between Red Dragon, Great Dragon, Holy Dragon, and Dragon is virtually identical to the sprite found in some of the Thunderh class dragons in Bahamut Lagoon. Namely the Pontilac and General.

Etymology[]

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, which is featured in the myths of many cultures.

Chromatic dragon is a classification of dragon in the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons who are typically of evil alignment, in contrast to the metallic dragons, and their queen is Tiamat. White, black, green, blue and red dragons are the classic chromatic dragons. Final Fantasy has derived a lot of influence from D&D, especially the early series. Red dragons are the largest and most powerful of the classic chromatic dragons who regard other chromatic dragons as inferior and make home inside active volcanoes or mountains. Red dragons use their powerful breath first, followed by physical strikes, then magical attacks.
