Phoenix Down, as featured in Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.

The undying phoenix is said to call back souls from the heavens, but to win the attention of such fabled bird, you must give up a feather as an offering. The best are the downy feathers of the tail... hence the term phoenix down, see? Mark well that not just any feather will do. Depending on quality and size, the blessing received varies greatly. Displeased? You get what you pay for.

Kirrik, Pugilist, Aletap Rumors

Phoenix Down (フェニックスの尾, Fenikkusu no o?, lit. Phoenix Tail), sometimes known as Fenix Down or Life, is a recurring common item in the Final Fantasy series. The "Down" refers to the down feathers of a bird, the undercoat of feathers beneath the visible layer on top. The down feathers of a Phoenix would return people from the dead as a Phoenix itself does. The Aletap Rumors of Final Fantasy XII says that the Phoenix Down works by being offered to appeal to the mystical Phoenix itself to allow a lost soul to return, with the quality and overall beauty of the current feather being a crucial factor.

Phoenix Downs are used to revive characters who have been knocked out in battle. Like most curative items and spells, characters can also throw a Phoenix Down at an undead enemy in most games, resulting in damage or instant death, although some undead enemies and bosses are immune to this. Alternatives to a Phoenix Down are the White Magic spells Raise and Arise. There is also a Mega Phoenix item in some games that revives all characters.

In games where only one character is controlled, such as Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII- and Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, instead of reviving a fallen character, the Phoenix Down casts Reraise on the player.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Phoenix Down revives a character with 20% of their max HP. Phoenix Lores 1, 2, and 3 raise that percentage to 30%, 40%, and 50% respectively, and wearing the Pheasant Netsuke doubles the potency. Using Phoenix Downs with the Nihopalaoa accessory results in instant death.

Phoenix Downs are bought for 250 gil, or 200 gil in the Zodiac versions. They can also be found in numerous chests and dropped by many humanoid-type enemies.

In the original version, Phoenix Downs used by Amalia were not expended from the player's inventory. This was changed for the Zodiac versions.

There is a minor glitch involving using Phoenix Down simultaneously with another item on an ally.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Phoenix Down XIII

Phoenix Down revives a character with 70% of their max health. They can be bought for 1,000 gil from Unicorn Mart. Phoenix Downs are dropped by most Corps enemies. Items do not use the ATB bar, making them useful when the party needs to revive someone as quickly as possible. However, it cannot be used on the lead character, for the game ends immediately after he or she falls.

Lightning's weapon ability, Improved Raise, also affects Phoenix Downs, allowing them to fully restore a fallen ally's HP.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

Revives one ally from KO and grants Protect and Shell.

Description

Phoenix Down revives a character with 40% of their max HP, gives them Shell and Protect, and restores some wound damage. This common item can be easily obtained from monsters in the early game; achieving 5 stars in a battle where one of the opposing monster(s) offer a Phoenix Down will increase the chances of receiving one. Phoenix Down can also be bought from Chocolina's shop for 1,600 gil. It can be dropped by Chaos Bahamut (commmon; Academia -500 AF-), Nekton (rare), Meonekton (rare), Gogmagog (common), Sarracenia (common), and Paradox Alpha (common).

There is an enhanced item called Phoenix Blood which fully revives a character and grants Haste status. It can be bought for 4,000 coins in Serendipity and dropped by Pantopoda (rare) and Chaos Bahamut (rare; Academia -500 AF-).

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII[]

Phoenix Down is a common item available in most General Stores for 1280 gil, or from Hope on the Ark for 1 EP. It is used to revive Lightning from KO with 50% of her HP, also applying Veil, Protect and Shell.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

They are occasionally found inside Bronze chests within Deep Dungeons, and are obtainable as a reward from the quests "The Rise and Fall of Gentlemen" and "A Faithful Companion". They can also be purchased from the player-operated Market Board. Only one Phoenix Down can be carried in the player's inventory at a time.

When using the Trust system, in the event the Healer is KO'd, a fellow Trust party member will use a Phoenix Down on them outside of combat.

Final Fantasy XV[]

A talisman that takes on miraculous properties by way of Noctis's powers. Brings fallen party members back to life and increases HP and MP recovery rate.

Description

Phoenix Downs are bought for 1000 gil from shops. They revive one party member from a Down state with full HP. When the party leader's max HP falls to 0, the player has a short window to use a Phoenix Down to restore them before receiving a Game Over. Using a Phoenix Down applies the Phoenix's Favor status, boosting HP and MP recovery rate.

Final Fantasy Type-0[]

Phoenix Downs are noticeably rare. They can be obtained by completing certain Special Orders in the Missions "Operation MA Demolition", "Escaping the Imperial Capital", and "The Battle of Judecca", as well as by completing the Tasks "Mad about Ms. Tokimiya" and "SPP Scavenger V". One can also be obtained by exchanging 80 Knowing Tags with the Class Eighth moogle. In battle, using a Phoenix Down will revive both adjacent party members, though the item must be used before they disappear from the battlefield.

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, a phoenix or phenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again. According to some texts, the phoenix could live over 1,400 years before rebirth.

The down of birds is a layer of fine feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers. Very young birds are clad only in down.
