The Chocobo Farm is a field map in Final Fantasy VII. It is located in the Grasslands Area on the world map. When first available, the Chocobo Farm is where the Chocobo Lure Materia is purchased to cross the marsh to the Mythril Mines, making it the best way to proceed in "Going After Sephiroth".

In part 2, after the events of "That Which Waits in the Northernmost Reaches" when Meteor is summoned, the farm serves a greater role in the Chocobo breeding sidequest, allowing the player to breed better Chocobos for racing and for reaching Materia Caves.

The Chocobo Farm is located in the Grasslands Area, the northeast end of the eastern continent.

Fields[]

The Fields, simply named "Chocobo farm" (チョコボファーム, Chocokobo Fāmu?) in the menu, is the area first reached from the map. When first visited during "Going After Sephiroth" up until Chocobo breeding is unlocked, four Chocobos are in the pen outside the barn. The Summon Materia Choco/Mog can be obtained by talking to them. It can still be found later in parts 2 and 3 by renting stables at the farm and sending caught Chocobos to the farm where they appear outside at the pen.

Choco Billy no longer sells the Chocobo Lure Materia after the party has the Highwind, but the player can still get it if missed, as a second Chocobo Lure Materia becomes available to find in front of the fences of the Chocobo Farm.

Farmhouse[]

The farmhouse, simply named "Chocobo farm" (グリン&グリングリンの家, Gurin to Guringurin no Ie?, lit. Choco Bill & Choco Billy's House) in the menu, is a small house where Choco Bill lives. Choco Bill can be talked to here and will give the player some advice, and when Chocobo breeding is unlocked, rents stables for 10,000 gil.

Chocobo Ranch[]

FFVII-ChocoboStables

Stables.

Named "Chocobo Ranch" (チョコボ小屋, Chokobo Koya?, lit. Chocobo Stables) in the menu, this area is where the player's Chocobos are kept in pens and bred once breeding is available. Both Choco Billy and Chole are found here. Before breeding is available, Choco Billy will sell the Chocobo Lure Materia. Chole, Choco Billy's sister, also assists the player by keeping notes of what the Chocobo Sage divulges. She also gives a rough comparison of the resident Chocobos' strengths. The player can approach the Chocobos in the pens to feed them and view them.

Quests[]

Crossing the marsh[]

When crossing the marsh in "Going After Sephiroth", the player must obtain the Chocobo Lure Materia to catch Chocobos from the wild. This can be purchased from Choco Billy for 2,000 gil. Although possible to reach the Mythril Mines by simply defeating or avoiding the Midgar Zolom, it is considerably easier to use a Chocobo to cross. The Materia is also needed for the Chocobo breeding sidequest, and so it is advised to buy it as soon as it is available.

Choco/Mog[]

The Choco/Mog Materia is obtained by talking to one of the Chocobos near the fence in the pen outside the barn. This is done earliest during "Going After Sephiroth". In Parts 2 and 3, after starting the Chocobo breeding sidequest, if one did not grab Choco/Mog, as soon as the player captures a Chocobo it will be standing at the south end; after watching it dance it will give the Summon Materia.

Chocobo breeding[]

Menu when talking to Choco Billy.

After the player acquires the Highwind, it is possible to rent stables for Chocobos caught in the wild. Catching a Chocobo around the tracks allows the player to send them to the pen outside the barn, where up to four can be kept at the same time (if a fifth one is captured, the first one will automatically be released), from where they can be moved into the stables by talking to Choco Billy.

In the stables Chocobos can be fed Greens to boost their stats for racing in the Gold Saucer, as well as bred to produce new offspring using Nuts, many of which are of various different breeds. Once a Chocobo has bred, they need cooldown time before they can produce another offspring, which is randomly set after 3-10 battles; newborn Chocobos can breed after 3-18 battles (which must be won, as escaping does not count towards this).

Though all wild Chocobos are yellow, they are of different variants, and based on their potential they may produce special colored offspring. The Blue and Green Chocobo require a combination of Good and a Great Chocobos caught in the wild each, of opposite genders, and are bred using Carob Nuts. These colors allow the Chocobo to cross shallow water and climb mountains, respectively. The Black Chocobo combines the traits of Green and Blue Chocobos to cross both mountains and rivers, and requires a Carob or Sahara Nut. Finally, the Gold Chocobo can cross any terrain, and requires a Black and Wonderful Chocobo to be bred with a Zeio Nut. New breeds allow the player to access Materia Caves on the world map.

In the PlayStation versions, a bug causes all Chocobo selection screens to be unusable for players who mapped the Circle button to Cancel.
