Malboro is a monster in Final Fantasy VIII fought on the Great Plains of Esthar before Lunar Cry, in Grandidi Forest, and on the Island Closest to Heaven and the Island Closest to Hell. The earliest it is possible to encounter a Malboro is in Esthar's Grandidi Forest area, which can be reached via chocobo.

Malboro is one of the game's toughest opponents, and at LV100 has more HP than any other regular enemy. Malboros are important enemies for the Malboro Tentacle items they yield, used not only to teach Quistis the Bad Breath skill, but also to acquire the Doomtrain GF and for a weapon upgrade.

Stats[]

Battle[]

Malboro uses Bad Breath from FFVIII Remastered

Bad Breath.

More often than not, the Malboro will begin with Bad Breath, which can defeat a party without effective status defenses. Its other attacks include Eerie Sound Wave, which damages all party members, and Dissolving Acid, which will deplete 37.5% of a party member's current HP. Dissolving Acid is physical in nature and can be avoided with high evasion and luck.

Strategy[]

Among the best defenses against a Malboro is equipping a GF with the ST-Def-J x4 ability and junctioning Pain, Confuse, Berserk, and Sleep, negating nearly all the Malboro's status abnormalities, leaving only Slow and Petrifying. One can also replace Berserk with Break and allow the berserked character to whittle away the Malboro's HP. With Auto-Haste equipped, Slow will also be prevented, and if the party's HP is high enough, the Malboro's other attacks won't KO anyone before they kill it; with the entire party thus prepared, the player could simply wait for the battle to end.

If the player lacks the aforementioned spells (or ST-Def-J x4), they should at least junction Sleep, Berserk and Confuse, which still leaves a character available to cure the party; Selphie's Full-cure Limit Break is a quick way to cure the party from status effects, though Siren's Treatment command, Remedies and Esuna are good as well. Summoning Cerberus would let one party member use Esuna three times to heal all of the party in one turn.

If the player has Ribbon, they become invulnerable to Bad Breath. Obtaining the Ribbon item is difficult, however, being a rare treasure from either Chocobo World (original versions) or Angelo Search (Remastered).

Equipping a character with Initiative lets them have a turn before the Malboro can use its Bad Breath, further eased by lowering battle speed in the Config menu. Having Quistis in critical status and ready with Degenerator will instantly defeat any Malboro. If the party is at a low level, the player may wish to use the Tonberry GF's LV Up ability to ensure a better chance of Malboro Tentacle drops.

Demi

Using Demi against Malboro.

Because of Malboro's high HP, Demi works well against it, dealing 9999 damage easily. The spell can be drawn from Malboro, making draw-casting a good strategy. The player can also summon Cerberus to triple-cast Demi.

Triple Triad[]

TTMalboro

Malboro is a poison-elemental Level 5 Monster Card in Triple Triad that boasts two 7s, the highest value for Level 5, making it a good card to use in play against many NPCs. Four Malboro cards become Malboro Tentacle with Quezacotl's Card Mod.

Etymology[]

The name may be a reference to Marlboro Cigarettes, since the creatures often spew horrid fumes from their mouths.
