Battle[]

Ultimecia-Griever from FFVIII Remastered

Ultimecia junctions herself onto Griever.

Ultimecia can cast Holy and Dispel at the start of the battle. She can instantly kill the party's Guardian Forces, summon Helix allies, and absorb any KOed characters into time. After Ultimecia summons one Helix, she begins to cast Ultima. If she can summon two Helixes, she will gain access to Meteor and will begin using her special attack, Great Attractor, every other turn.

Great Attractor deals powerful physical damage to the entire team, but can be defended against with Protect. It is best to kill Ultimecia before she can summon any Helixes, but if she does—once she loses about 65% of her HP, her tail falls off and the Helixes disappear. Once her tail falls off, she begins casting Quake and Tornado, but both are preferable to Great Attractor.

After Ultimecia's Griever Form is defeated, Griever disappears for good, but the party must still face Ultimecia one last time.

Strategy[]

Using Shell and Protect helps mitigate damage from Ultimecia's attacks. Good Spirit and Vitality junctions help, but the final bosses may eradicate entire stocks of the player's spells, so they might lose spells junctioned to stats at random. Therefore, it is best to work fast. Quistis and Selphie have Limit Breaks that can bestow Shell/Protect to the whole party at once, if they happen to be part of the player's formation.

The player can inflict Ultimecia-Griever with Vit 0 with Meltdown and use any Auras or Aura Stones available to bestow the party's best attacker with Aura status, and then use Limit Breaks; now is a good time to use them even if the player only had a few left, as the final form uses an attack that lowers the party's HP to 1 no matter what, giving easy access to Limit Breaks even without Aura status. Squall's Renzokuken is good, as is Zell's Duel and Irvine's Shot. Squall's Renzokuken animation is slightly different than usual for this battle, with the animation slowing down and emphasizing the finishing blow, with a total of eight hits. He stabs the opponent during execution until the last blow contains a charging slash.

Musical themes[]

During the battle with the fused form of Griever and Ultimecia, the music used is titled "Maybe I'm a Lion". It was composed by Nobuo Uematsu. Its title may be inspired by the English Hard Rock band Deep Purple's "Maybe I'm a Leo".

Etymology[]

Ultimecia'a cinematic attack in this form is called Great Attractor. The Great Attractor is a gravity anomaly in intergalactic space within the range of the Hydra-Centaurus Supercluster that reveals the existence of a localized concentration of mass equivalent to tens of thousands of galaxies.
