A shop in Final Fantasy X.

Shops (ショップ, Shoppu?) are a recurring feature in the Final Fantasy series. Appearing in every game, they provide the player with areas where items, weapons, armor and magic can be bought and sold for gil.

Not every game has the same kind of shops available, for example, in the original Final Fantasy, there were shops for both Black and White Magic, while in most games, there is no division. Final Fantasy VIII features two kinds of shops: the recurring item shops and the junk shop, which acts as a weapon shop. In most games shops are physical locations the player should visit to commence commerce, but in some games shops are accessed from the menu.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy[]

FFI-WeaponShop

A weapon shop (Dawn of Souls).

FF1 NES Shop

An item shop (NES).

There are five types of shops: weapon, armor, White Magic, Black Magic, and item. Shops are available in each town. In the Whisperwind Cove, a village of mages exists, where magic of all levels and magic-related equipment is sold.

Item, weapon, armor, and magic shops exist, the latter no longer being divided. All towns have one of each.

Final Fantasy III[]

FFIII-MagicShop

A magic shop (DS).

Weapon, armor, item, and magic shops return. Unlike the previous games, not every town has at least one of these, such as in Saronia or Doga's Manor. Doga's Village has magic shops that sell all kinds of magic, except for level 8 spells, which can only be purchased at Eureka. In this same area exists a shop that sells both armor and weapons.

Magic shops are removed, as each character learns their spells individually by leveling. All towns have at least one armor, weapon, and item shop.

Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-[]

Due to the linearity and shortness of the interlude, there are few shops. There are shops in the Cave of Eblan and the Feymarch; the former doesn't have anyone living there anymore while in the case of the latter, nobody sells anything.

Surgate Castle's armory.

Magic shops return alongside the job system. Black Magic, White Magic, Time Magic, and the first level of Summon Magic can be purchased. Item, weapon, and armor shops exist in every town as well. A new feature to the series is that all the shops can share the same building.

Final Fantasy VI[]

FFVI Auction House iOS

The auction house at Jidoor.

Magic shops do not appear, and while armor and weapon shops can share the same building, item shops are always distinct. A new type of shop is introduced, the auction house, only found at Jidoor. The Narshe weapon shop in the World of Ruin, if opened with Locke Cole, holds a secret where the player is able to get either the Ragnarok weapon or the Ragnarok magicite.

Icicle inn7

The Icicle Inn Weapon Shop.

The shops are of different style to the shops in previous installments. While there are general shops that sell all kinds of items, there is no distinction between armor and weapon shops, and the Materia shops serve as the magic shops. Shops that sell only accessories also exist.

The Sector 7 Slums shops become unavailable early on, which makes certain early armor become unavailable if the player didn't buy them. In Junon the shops' inventory update after the party gains Highwind, all but for the Materia shop. Game data suggests the Materia shop's inventory was intended to update as well, and it not doing so is a glitch. This is notable as it would have sold the Magic Plus Materia that is not available from any shop in the retail version.

In Wutai the shops will not sell the items to the player if Yuffie is still hiding in the town; the player must complete the "Homecoming of a Miserable Daughter" sidequest of reuniting with her for the shops to open. In Mideel, most of the shops close after an earthquake ravages the town, but the player can still buy the items for an increased price from a shopper with a white chocobo.

Zack can access an online shop feature of the Worldwide Network, which the player uses from the menu. New shop online addresses can be obtained in story events or as mission rewards or in special story events. Zack can buy accessories or Materia.

Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-[]

The item shops resemble 1950's style jukeboxes, and are found in various places in each of the levels. They are also found at the end of each stage. They all sell the same items, and offer a range of gun upgrades.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Vending machine in Corkscrew Tunnel from FFVII Remake

Vending machine.

Vendors sell all kinds of items and equipment and materia and their wares may change depending on how far along the game the player is, and what odd jobs they have completed. In dungeons, the player can use vending machines. There is also a special shop where the currency is moogle medals.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

Deling Shop

Deling City Shopping Arcade.

Esthar Shopping Mall

Esthar City Shopping Mall.

There are no common equipment shops, instead Junk shops where weapons can be remodeled. Shops can be accessed anywhere using the Guardian Force Tonberry's Call Shop ability, and junk shops can be accessed anywhere using the Guardian Force Doomtrain's Junk Shop ability. Shop prices and stock are affected by the menu abilities Haggle, Sell-High, and Familiar.

All regular shops have the same items. The exceptions are the shops in Esthar City with some unique shops, and the pet shop in Timber. Some shops in Esthar City are closed: Cheryl's Shop will give a Rosetta Stone randomly when one tries to access the shop, and Johnny's Shop is initially closed but will open at a random time when the player tries to enter it. The player must open Johnny's Shop from the shopping arcade terminal in Esthar City to get it for Tonberry's Call Shop ability.

There is a dummied shop that was intended to be found somewhere in Trabia, but it didn't have any unique items.

Final Fantasy IX[]

FFIX-Dali Shop

The shop at Dali.

Shops are commonly found in cities and towns, but some merchant moogles roam Gaia, offering their services when spoken to in dungeons and other places that have no physical shops. The moogles sell various items and equipment but in towns equipment shops and item shops are usually separate. Zorn and Thorn sell items aboard the Hilda Garde I when the player first ventures to the Forgotten Continent, as there are no towns in the area.

An auction house can be found at Treno, and another type of shop is introduced: the synthesis shops found at most towns. There is also a hidden synthesis shop that opens after the player defeats the optional boss Hades.

The weapon shop in Treno is also a battle arena. The shops' inventories update later in the game and thus the player can miss out on some equipment if they didn't buy it in time.

Other than the common shops found at travel agencies and towns, the wandering merchant O'aka XXIII and his brother Wantz provide the party their services along the journey. Their stock is varied. Most shops offer both equipment and items and so, the number of shops per area rarely surpasses the three (counting with O'aka).

If the player meets with Wantz, he will sell weapons with empty ability slots in Macalania at the end of the game. The player can buy Clear Spheres from the Monster Arena to clear out nodes in the Sphere Grid to replace with more potent stat boosts to max out their stats.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Lake Macalania Shop

Shop at Lake Macalania.

Shops appear in most of the locations within travel agencies and merchants. Barkeep has a shop on board the party's airship, the Celsius, and if the player saves O'aka from his Al Bhed debtors, he will come onboard the airship as well and sell the player items to pay his debt. The player can no longer equip weapons, so the shops' inventories consist of accessories and items.

If the player saves the travel agency at Lake Macalania from fiends and has O'aka reunite with his brother Wantz, they will find good accessories from their shop in Chapter 5. If the player has Clasko open a Chocobo Ranch at the former Monster Arena, he will balance the player's chocobo related items for catching chocobos.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Every town and city in Vana'diel has at least one non-player character selling weapons, armor, items, and magic scrolls. The big cities (except Jeuno) also host the headquarters of crafting guilds and their guild shops can be found in their cities. Guild shops, unlike regular shops, have opening and closing hours and have a holiday on a specific day each week. Despite the existence of NPC merchants, players generally trade with each other through the use of auction house since they can get a better price and most of the best items are not sold by NPC merchants.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Westersand shop

Lohen's shop at Dalmasca Westersand.

In the major towns of Ivalice, shops are divided into magick, weapons, armor, gambits, technicks, and items and in minor areas there are usually merchants selling base provisions. Many of the more remote shops update their stock late in the game to sell special magick and equipment not available from any other shop. Necrohol of Nabudis has a hidden shop the player can find by inspecting a corner of a room in an area off the map. The Clan Centurio shop in Muthru Bazaar in Rabanastre sells items based on the player's rank in the clan.

A new kind of shop is the bazaar that is available in every normal shop, but the items in the Bazaar only become available as the player sells specific loot items in specific quantities to the shops. Many of the best equipment are only available through the bazaar. Visiting different types of shops a specific number of times (purchases are not needed) unlocks monographs at the bazaar.

Maps can be purchased from Cartographers' Guild moogles. The only time a map can be purchased from a normal vendor is if the player missed the map of Rabanastre while they were there, in which case the map will be available in a shop in Old Archades.

The Skyferries also sell items, and different airship routes have slightly different stock.

Shop prices were dropped and many shops now carry different items in the Zodiac versions.

FFXIIRW-TomajShop

Tomaj's shop.

The only shops are Tomaj's equipment shop, Cu Sith's smithy that forges equipment from materials, and Llyud's material shop. They are on board the Sky Saloon of the Galbana. Throughout the game the shops evolve from small shacks to buildings, and accommodate more items to sell.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Save Point and Shop FFXIII

A Retail Network Shop.

Shops are accessed via Save Stations and new shops are found and added to the shop list along the storyline. Certain shops are only opened after having completed certain missions. Most of the weapons in the game are found in treasure spheres but the same weapons come available in the shops soon after in case the player missed them, or wants another copy of it.

Some of the weapons with special abilities are only found in shops that are acquired after completing missions. Shops sell weapons, accessories, upgrade materials, items and there is also one shop that sells shrouds.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

Weapon shop ffxiii-2

Weapon shop.

The shopkeeper is Chocolina, who appears in numerous locations to sell wares. The further in the game the player progresses, the more items they can buy from her. The player can buy regular battle items, adornments for Paradigm Pack monsters, and equipment for Serah and Noel. Some equipment requires the player to trade in items dropped by monsters to make.

Serendipity also has a shop, where the player can trade their coins for prizes.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII[]

LRXIII Shop

A shop.

Shops are found in towns and they will sell more items as the time goes by, and more items will become available on days 6, 8, and 11. Some items are only available on the Hard difficulty, meaning it requires a New Game+. Shops are usually available at any time, but there are exceptions.

Available shop types:

  • General Stores sell various recovery items. Tenio, the Black Market Dealer found in the Patron's Palace at the beginning of the game, introduces players to the use of general stores and provides an item tutorial.
  • Adventuring Essentials sell notes on monsters that contain info on the enemies' weaknesses, HP, and so on, adding them to the Datalog. On a second playthrough, Adventuring Essentials also sells basic materials to upgrade weapons and shields.
  • Outfitters sell garbs and adornments.
  • Forges sell weapons and shields. On a second playthrough, the Forge also allows the player to upgrade or downgrade weapons and shields.
  • Sorcery Shops synthesize and upgrade abilities.
  • Restaurants serve three types of dishes. The most expensive ones recover Lightning's HP completely; the cheaper ones will recover only a certain amount of HP.
  • Soul seed Merchants buy soul seeds, but the player will need to complete the quest "Soul Seeds" in Luxerion before they become available.
  • Forge (Rare) is a wandering merchant selling rare garbs and adornments.

Item shops sell recovery items, food Ingredients, parts for the Regalia (including music for the music player), fishing lures and gear, and key items. Shops are found at outposts and vending machines, and there are some temporary shops, such as the shop outside Steyliff Grove in Chapter 7. The player's car also has a shop in the menu that updates inventory as the player encounters new items in other shops.

Equipment vendors sell weapons and accessories; attires are not sold in shops. A recurring type of equipment shop is a black Culless van. Tackle shops sell fishing gear and are located at fishing spots.

Some shops get new stock or change their prices as the player completes sidequests for them. The player can sell items in their inventory bar key items to any shop. Most shops are open 24/7, but some tackle shops are only around during the daytime.

Some shop items' brand names pay homage to a variety of Final Fantasy terms. For instance; Mama Edea's Potato Chips (referring to Edea Kramer from Final Fantasy VIII), Regen Co. Refreshments (referring to the Regen spell), and Great Glacier Cola (referring to the Great Glacier from Final Fantasy VII). Some shops advertise American Express Credit as product placement.

Final Fantasy Type-0[]

FFType-0-Shop

Shopkeeper.

Shops are indicated by the icon for "Shop" (, Mise?) above the shopkeeper's head. There are three main shops located within Akademeia, which will sell more wares as the player earns special bounties by fulfilling certain requirements, such as completing missions on increased difficulty levels. Other shops, which are found in towns on the world map, retain their set of wares throughout the game. Shops usually sell equipment, but gift shops also exist.

In addition to the usual "Buy" and "Sell" options in shop menus, players can also access their equipment menu through shops, due to the Main Menu being available only at relic terminals.

Final Fantasy Tactics[]

FFT Shop

An Outfitter.

Shops are called Outfitters and exist in every town. There are differences in each town's outfitter stocks, as heavier armor and weapons like swords and heavy armor are sold in castles, while a wider range of weapons, like katana and rods, are sold at trading cities. The shops' inventories may update between chapters.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]

FFTA Shop

The shop at Cyril.

Shops exist on every town that have their own set prices, giving discounts on weapons usable by the town's dominant race while other weapons are sold at higher prices. A good example is spears being cheaper in Sprohm than anywhere else, as they are usable by bangaa-only jobs, while Rapiers, a viera-exclusive weapon, are cheaper in Muscadet.

Each town has their own shopkeeper, whose race is the dominant one in the town. The only shopkeeper whose name is known is Ellen, a viera shopkeeper who sells at Muscadet. She's mentioned in the mission "No Answers" along with a member from Clan Ritz.
