Bahamut is a summon in Final Fantasy III. While appearing originally in the first Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy III marks its first appearance as a series summon. Bahamut can be called forth into battle with the Bahamur Summon Magic spell. Unlike its other Summon Magic counterparts, Bahamut appears during the events of the game's story.

Profile[]

Bahamut is depicted as a massive winged dragon. The creature has a gray scaly body with a pale green underside.

In the original Famicom release, Bahamut on the map is depicted as a large orange dragon, while appearing as its gray colored form in battle. In addition, depending on the version of Bahamut summoned, Bahamut's color scheme would be different.

Bahamuts Rematch from FFIII Pixel Remaster

Bahamut appears before the party to prove their worth.

Bahamut is first spotted by the Warriors of Light prior to entering the Dragon's Peak outside of Canaan. While looking for Desch, a man who possesses the Mini spell and broke Salina's heart, Bahamut appears before the party at the peak's summit and takes them to its nest. After meeting up with Desch in the dragon's nest, Bahamut attacks the party when they attempt to escape. Knowing how strong the creature is, the party flees from Bahamut, causing it to give up its pursuit of the party.

After the Warriors of Light obtain the Invincible from the Ancient Ruins, they travel to Bahamut's Lair and are given the chance to fight Bahamut at its behest. After a fearsome battle, Bahamut is defeated and lends its power to the heroes.

Spoilers end here.

Obtained[]

The Bahamur spell to summon Bahamut can be obtained by defeating Bahamut at Bahamut's Lair immediately after obtaining the Invincible. Alternatively, the Bahamur spell can also be bought in the final room in Eureka, costing 60,000 gil to purchase from the vendors. Bahamut is a level 8 Summon Magic that can be used by the Evoker, Summoner, and Sage jobs.

Gameplay[]

Combat[]

Being the strongest summon in the game, Bahamut is extremely useful in combat. Should the Evoker or Sage (3D) summon Bahamut, the summon may cast Aura on the party, which increases the party's overall attack power, allowing them to deal more damage to enemies.

Bahamut's Megaflare attack available to Summoners and Sages (2D) is one of the strongest magic attacks in the game, rivaling Meteor, making it useful on dealing massive damage to groups of enemies. However, due to Sages not having access to Bahamut's Megaflare in the 3D remake of the game, Bahamut's use dwindles unless the creature is called forth by a Summoner.

Etymology[]

Bahamut (Arabic بهموت Bahamūt) originated as an enormous whale in ancient pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. Upon Bahamut's back stands a bull with four thousand eyes, ears, noses, mouths, tongues and feet called Kujuta (also spelled "Kuyutha") (compared with the pair of Behemoth and Leviathan). Between each of these is a distance of a 500-year journey. On the back of Kujuta is a mountain of ruby. Atop this mountain is an angel who carries six hells, earth, and seven heavens on its shoulders.

Another version of the Arabic story is that Bahamut is indeed a dragon and he stands on a whale called Liwash.

In modern times, the game Dungeons & Dragons is responsible for reimagining Bahamut as the king of dragons, a benevolent Platinum Dragon; the opposite of the malevolent Tiamat, the five-headed Chromatic Queen of Dragons.
