Nightmare in Final Fantasy Tactics.

On the verge of death... Nightmare!

Upon casting in Final Fantasy Tactics

Nightmare (ナイトメア, Naitomea?, lit. Nightmare) or (悪夢, Akumu?, lit. Nightmare) is a recurring ability in the Final Fantasy series, having most commonly appeared in games taking place in Ivalice. It causes Sleep with 100% accuracy, and may also induce Doom.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy VII[]

Nightmare is one of the abilities usable by Vincent during his Limit Break Hellmasker. Nightmare inflicts Sleep, Poison, Confuse, Silence, Frog, and Small to one enemy.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Nightmare is a Blood Pact of Diabolos under the Ward category. It afflicts enemies in the area of effect with a special form of Sleep known informally as "nightmare" or "hypersleep"; unlike normal sleep, taking damage will not wake the slept creatures although healing will. The slept creatures also receive Bio status, causing them to take damage over time. It is considered a Dark-based ability that costs 42 MP and is accessible at level 29.

Like Diabolos's other blood pacts, this one is used by enemy Diabolos Avatars such as Diabolos Prime. When doing a Diabolos fight at the fight's original intended level, Nightmare is by far the worst danger that players will face. Even Diabolos's Astral Flow ability, Ruinous Omen, will result in fewer player deaths and mission failures than Nightmare. Stunning Diabolos whenever he readies Nightmare may easily mean the difference between failure and success.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Nightmare is the ability of Diabolos, which inflicts non-elemental damage to one target and has a chance to inflict Sleep.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Nightmare is an ability of Diabolos, which causes any player facing him to suffer the Nightmare status effect for several seconds, taking damage over time while immobilized.

After he transforms into Diabolos Hollow at the end of Dun Scaith, he gains an upgraded version called Hollow Nightmare, which inflicts Doom on any players facing him.

Final Fantasy Tactics[]

Cúchulainn and Zalera can use this ability. This attack inflicts Sleep or Doom (randomly decided) with a 100% success rate. See also enemy abilities.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]

Puts targets to sleep, and sometimes dooms them.

Etymology[]

A nightmare is an unpleasant dream that can cause a strong emotional response from the mind, typically fear or horror, but also despair, anxiety and sadness. The dream may contain situations of danger, discomfort, psychological or physical terror. Sufferers often awaken in a state of distress and may be unable to return to sleep for a prolonged period. The word derives from the Old English "mare", a mythological demon or goblin who torments others with frightening dreams.

Trivia[]

  • The (ナイトメア, naitomea?, lit. nightmare) spelling is consistently used when referring to Nightmare as a Diabolos ability, while the (悪夢, akumu?, lit. nightmare) spelling is reserved exclusively for Nightmare as a Lucavi/Assassin ability.
