Bevelle is at the heart of Spira, even today. It's also the place where I was born. I suppose that makes it my hometown, but I can't say that I have a lot of fond memories here.

Yuna

It seems Bevelle still likes to keep its secrets.

Paine

Bevelle [bəˈvɛɫ] is a city in Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, and Final Fantasy X -Will-. The capital of Spira's dogmatic society; it is initially the home of the Yevon religion and, later, the New Yevon party. Being Yuna's birthplace, it remained her home until her father, High Summoner Braska, defeated Sin. In Final Fantasy X, the Warrior Monks and the fiend Evrae protect the city, and Sin rarely attacks it.

History[]

Bevelle was a technological wonder one thousand years ago, surpassing even the city-state of Zanarkand's glories. The novel Final Fantasy X-2.5 ~Eien no Daishō~ explains that at this time Bevelle worshiped a pantheon of deities: Luchera, goddess of war; Kush, goddess of abundance; Anli, god of travelers; Ifarnal, god of beauty; Sloan, god of vengeance; Alb, god of workers; Guard, god of the Farplane; Valm, god of order; Kanaela, goddess of the moon; and Meiyoh, god of the sun. The leader of Bevelle was a Summoner who declared the leader of Zanarkand, Yu Yevon, and his daughter Yunalesca to be heretics who had strayed away from the gods.

The escalating hostilities between the city-states culminated in the Machina War, and Bevelle held the advantage with its machina weapons. Though it developed the mobile weapon Vegnagun, they could not use it as Vegnagun was unable to tell friend from foe, and it was hidden away underneath Bevelle. During the war both sides used both machina and summoners, though the summoners of Bevelle were not willing soldiers. As soon as someone was shown to have a talent for summoning they were recruited and trained from youth. Summoners and their guardians disposed of their old identities by taking the name of one of Bevelle's gods as their new name.

Zanarkand's leader, Yu Yevon, gathered the Zanarkand survivors and turned them into fayth all but for his daughter Yunalesca and her husband, Zaon. Yu Yevon used the newly-created fayth to conjure a dream world parallel of Zanarkand at the height of its glory, setting it far out to sea, never to be discovered by mortals.

To shield himself and his creation, Yu Yevon clad himself in armor formed from pyreflies, becoming the creature known as Sin. Sin turned on Zanarkand, decimating it, and though Bevelle had thus won the war, Sin remained in Spira, attacking machina cities uniting Spira under a common fear. At that time, Bevelle's citizens thought that what Yevon summoned from the Zanarkand fayth was Sin that was going around destroying everything as a sign of Yevon's anger.

Yunalesca and her husband returned to Zanarkand's ruins, where she turned Zaon into a fayth and summoned his aeon and defeated Sin. The moment Zaon's aeon cracked Sin's shell, Yu Yevon took control of it, severing the mental link between Zaon and Yunalesca, killing her. Yunalesca already knew this would happen and was determined to stay in Spira as an unsent.

With Sin's "defeat", a short period of peace settled on Spira, known as the First Calm, and the survivors began reconstructing Spira, focusing on Bevelle. Yu Yevon regenerated a new Sin using Zaon's aeon as a core, and Spira's plight started anew. The new Sin destroyed the remaining machina civilizations, and thus, machina use began to fall out of favor.

The Yevon Temple was established in Bevelle, and the teachings of paying homage to Yevon and Yunalesca, and preaching of machina prohibition, were adopted by the world at large. The temples seized public sentiment and took control of Spira. The new religion of Yevon established Sin as a punishment for people's sins into its doctrine, spreading the story that the Calm will arrive with the Final Summoning, a dogma purposed from Yunalesca's summoning of Zaon's aeon. People's discontent of Sin not disappearing even if they believed in the teachings was dealt with harshly. The temples shifted the blame of Sin's return onto the people of Spira and brought about stability by leaving them hoping that once they atone, Sin will go away. However, Yevon's upper echelons know the truth, and all the while, Bevelle keeps secretly using machina despite its ban.

Final Fantasy X[]

Jecht freed from bevelle prison

Braska frees Jecht from prison.

Sin has been ravaging Spira for a thousand years, bringing technological innovation to a halt. It has been defeated several times but always returned. Ten years ago, when Sin killed his Al Bhed wife, Braska, a Yevon priest who had fallen out of favor with the church, resolved to become a summoner. Joined by Auron and Jecht as his guardians, Braska embarked on his pilgrimage to Zanarkand, leaving behind a seven-year-old Yuna in Bevelle. Jecht was a mysterious man who claimed to hail from Zanarkand and be a blitzball player for the Zanarkand Abes. He was jailed in Bevelle for being a drunken madman before Braska released Jecht to make him his guardian. Unknown to everyone, even Jecht himself, he came from Yu Yevon's ancient dream version of Zanarkand, which no one had yet discovered due to Sin's rampaging.

Yuna learned of her father's success and that it had claimed his life. She was found by Kimahri Ronso, who had come to take her to Besaid Island to grow up peacefully as a request from a dying Auron of what the girl's father wanted of her.

Ten years later, having become a summoner to begin her own pilgrimage, Yuna is abducted from the Al Bhed Home by the Guado and taken to Bevelle to be married to the unsent Seymour Guado. Though Yuna plotted to use the wedding for a chance to send Seymour to the Farplane, her guardians being held at gunpoint forces her to comply. When Seymour orders her guardians executed, Yuna threatens to commit suicide. Yuna falls off the palace top while summoning Valefor to break her fall and take her to Bevelle Temple to gain Bahamut. Once her guardians arrive, they are arrested.

Yuna Yevon Court

Yuna in the High Court of Yevon.

Yuna is put on trial for killing Seymour in the Macalania Temple. During the mock trial, Grand Maester Yo Mika reveals he is an unsent like Seymour and that unchanging continuity and rule by the dead in the spiral of death is what makes up Yevon. Yuna and her guardians are imprisoned in the Via Purifico. Finding Lulu, Kimahri, and Auron, Yuna wins against Isaaru in a contest of aeons at the dungeon's exit. Meanwhile, Tidus, Wakka, and Rikku are thrown into a flooded portion of the prison. Defeating the undead Evrae along the way, they exit the dungeon as well.

Yuna meets up with the rest of her guardians on the Highbridge. Confronted by Seymour, who has killed Maester Wen Kinoc and absorbs his pyreflies to become a fiend, they defeat him and escape into the Macalania Woods.

The party visits Zanarkand Ruins and defeats the unsent Yunalesca who had remained in the Zanarkand Dome to grant summoners the Final Aeon at the end of their pilgrimage only for Sin to be reborn. The party returns to Bevelle, where Yuna reveals she ended the Final Summoning tradition. Seeing no hope for Spira, Mika departs to the Via Infinito rather than see Sin destroy the world. The party asks Shelinda to spread the word of singing the "Hymn of the Fayth" to pacify Sin, and sets out to fight the beast on their airship, the Fahrenheit. During the assault, the weakened Sin falls from the sky and crashes on a portion of Bevelle.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

New Yevon

Bevelle Temple after being converted into the New Yevon party's headquarters.

After Sin's permanent defeat, Bevelle fell into chaos. The Yevonite priesthood fell in the wake of the revelations of the temple's origins, hypocrisy, and lies and disbanded in the face of the theocratic society's breakdown. During this cultural upheaval, a former Yevonite named Trema rejuvenated interest in Spira's history in the form of ancient spheres, and many sphere hunting groups sprung up ready to take on the task. New Yevon party was founded; however, Trema disappeared with the discovered spheres with their contents never made public. The party's leadership fell to a chairman who tried to have Yuna marry his son to garner public support. The chairman was forced to relinquish leadership to Baralai as he sought to continue Trema's philosophy of gradual adjustment to the world's new order.

Two years after the start of the Eternal Calm, Yuna returns to Bevelle with Rikku and Paine. While waiting for an audience with the New Yevon praetor, Yuna proposes they leave and explains she turned down an arrangement with the chairman's son. Baralai appears and reveals the New Yevon party repudiated the chairman and his son. Depending on whether the "awesome sphere" from Kilika is given to New Yevon, the party will either accept the Gullwings or declare them enemies.

Later, the Gullwings learn from the Leblanc Syndicate of Vegnagun being hidden beneath Bevelle. The two groups jump into the hole in the Chamber of the Fayth, and discover the Bevelle Underground, a complex filled with machina remaining from the Machina War. They find Vegnagun gone, the machina having responded to Nooj's attempt to destroy it by burrowing into the Farplane.

After Baralai disappears, having ended up being possessed by Shuyin while in a private discussion with Nooj and Gippal in the Bevelle Underground, Bevelle falls into turmoil. In Chapter 5, Isaaru might leave Zanarkand and try to help the New Yevon party get back on its feet. The Gullwings and Kinderguardians can discover a hidden maze-like dungeon called the Via Infinito.

Three months later, New Yevon, Youth League, and Machine Faction discuss dissolving, but New Yevon has difficulty moving forward with the change.

Final Fantasy X -Will-[]

Bevelle is still Spira's capital and the home of a new governing body known as the Spiran Council. Baralai, now the council leader, sends members Chuami and Kurgum to Besaid to meet with Yuna. The two meet Tidus at the Bevelle Stadium under construction, but Chuami notices he's injured and trying to hide it. Later, Chuami and Kurgum return to Bevelle with Yuna, and it's discovered that Sin has been revived, possibly beckoned back to Spira from the Farplane by someone's wish. Yuna delivers a speech to a crowd in a stadium, possibly the one in Bevelle, proclaiming she will defeat Sin once more.

Spoilers end here.

Temple aeon[]

Locations[]

In Final Fantasy X, most of Bevelle goes unexplored, and most of what the player sees are dungeon interiors. In Final Fantasy X-2, the player can pass through the gates that lead to the Bevelle Temple proper. New areas and the area where Yuna's trial occurred are accessible, but not the Via Purifico.

Cloister of Trials in Bevelle Temple.

Situated inside Bevelle Temple is a Chamber of the Fayth where the aeon Bahamut resides. Infiltrated without Yevon's blessings, its architecture uses sophisticated machina technology despite the machina ban. The cloister, consisting of a labyrinth of powered walkways and mystic seals housed in a mechanical framework, leads to the temple's fayth—the boy who serves as Tidus's "guide" in Spira.

In Final Fantasy X-2, the temple becomes New Yevon's headquarters. If the Gullwings side with the Youth League, they're stopped at the door and can't enter the base until the main story quest sends them there. If they side with New Yevon, they can enter freely. The trials area can be fully explored without the mechanisms, though it has become filled with fiends.

Via Purifico[]

Via purifico

Via Purifico.

Yuna, Auron, Lulu, and Kimahri are imprisoned in the labyrinth of the Via Purifico, above the water-filled sewers where Tidus, Wakka, and Rikku are held captive. After fighting guards posted at the exits, including Isaaru and Evrae Altana, they reunite and escape.

One can only access the Via Purifico on the first visit. If the player decides to return to Bevelle with the airship, they're taken to the Highbridge, and the palace entrance is guarded by Maroda, who won't allow the party to enter the city.

Bevelle Underground[]

The Bevelle Underground is located beneath the temple complex, but its official entry point is unknown. The Gullwings find their way in through a gaping hole in the Chamber of the Fayth. The hidden complex is an ancient and expansive armory from the days of Bevelle's war with Zanarkand but is littered with Yevon's insignia nonetheless. Aside from serving as a hangar for the hulk of Vegnagun, it contains a machina-operated prison called Gaol.

Via Infinito[]

Via Infinito.

The Via Infinito is a dungeon comprised of 100 levels, accessible in Chapter 5 as a sidequest. The player can find two Crimson Spheres on early levels, and the deeper part resolves minor, unanswered plot points, such as the fate of New Yevon's Lord Trema.
