Adamantoise is an enemy in Final Fantasy VIII. The rare giant turtle lives on beaches around Dollet and on Long Horn Island, but can also be found in Ultimecia Castle on the fountain square. It has good item drops and is thus worth seeking out, though can be annoying to defeat as it resists damage and can heal itself.

Battle[]

FFVIII Sand Storm

Sand Storm.

The heavily-armored Adamantoise will repeatedly heal its group and can blind party members, making for a potentially long battle. Adamantoises sometimes cast Protect and Shell on each other. They attack with claw swipes and Sandstorm that hits all party members.

Adamantoises are important enemies for the items they carry: Whisper teaches Quistis White Wind, Orihalcon teaches a Guardian Force the support ability Vit+40%, and Adamantine teaches Vit+60%, refines into Steel Curtain items (20 needed) for Auto-Protect, and is also required in modeling Squall's, Zell's, and Selphie's ultimate weapons.

Devouring a LV30 or higher Adamantoise earns a +1 stat boost to the devourer's Vitality.

Strategy[]

Degenerator

Defeating an Adamantoise with Degenerator.

The player can lower the monster's defenses with Meltdown. If Irvine is in the party, his Armor Shot is useful, as it ignores defense. The fastest way to defeat an Adamantoise is to use Quistis's Degenerator.

An easy method to defeat Adamantoises is to inflict them with Berserk, preventing them from healing and using defensive spells.

Adamantoise may be a good candidate for the LV Up and Down abilities to manipulate what items they yield, or to raise them higher to get the stat boost from Devour.

Triple Triad[]

TTAdamantoise

Adamantoise is an earth-elemental Level 4 Monster Card in Triple Triad used for playing the minigame and for turning into Turtle Shell with Quezacotl's Card Mod.

Etymology[]

Adamantoise is a portmanteau of "adamantite" and "tortoise".

Adamantite and similar words including Adamant and Adamantine are used to refer to any especially hard substance, whether composed of diamond, some other gemstone, or some type of metal.
