Wyvern (ワイバーン, Waibān?), also known as Y Burn or Twinhead Wyvern, is a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy series. Wyverns, in general, are considered winged dragon-like creatures without forearms or with forearms that are not independent of their wings.

Final Fantasy XI[]

There are two very distinct creatures called Wyverns. There is a creature family known as a Wyvern which meet the traditional description of a Wyvern, and then there are Dragoons' summonable pets.

The traditional Wyverns are enemy creatures that detect players by the use of their sight. They are generally found in out of the way places, like Kuftal Tunnel (where the Notorious Monster Guivre is well-known to wreak havoc), and are most numerous in Ifrit's Cauldron. They have a number of abilities, including the ability dispel up to three positive status effects from everyone in the party or alliance facing them. The common Wyvern is encountered as a regular enemy in the Labyrinth of Onzozo, Nyzul Isle, and the Zhayolm Remnants.

A Dragoon's wyvern is actually not a wyvern at all, but instead a dragon hatchling. It is summoned by Dragoons using the Call Wyvern ability; some enemy Dragoons are also capable of using Call Wyvern to summon a Wyvern. It does physical damage against the same target the Dragoon engages. It also will perform elemental breath weapon attacks when the dragoon uses a weapon skill. The type of breath weapon used is dependent upon the dragoon's Support Job.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Wyvern xii

Wyverns are a subclass of the dragon genus. They are aerial enemies, and can only be fought with ranged weapons, magicks or technicks. The common Wyvern is an enemy found in the Ogir-Yensa and Nam-Yensa Sandseas. It is on a slightly higher level when encountered in the Nam-Yensa, but has the same stats and item spoils. The only difference is that in the Ogir-Yensa, Wyvern is sometimes immune to Silence.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Wyvern RW

Wyvern is a Rank II Fire Flying Esper. It costs 14 Affinity Points to summon. Its normal attack, Gnaw, deals damage to one foe. Its special attack, Fire Breath, deals Fire damage to multiple foes in range.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Wyverns are a subclass of Feral Creature that were used as transport on Gran Pulse before the War of Transgression. They can inflict status ailments with their breath attacks. The common Wyvern is an enemy encountered in the Sunleth Waterscape. Its Bite attack inflicts heavy damage and can easily knock out party members if they are afflicted with Deprotect. The easiest way to defeat the Wyvern is to inflict Poison on it and then keep attacking.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Wyvern from FFXIV

Wyverns are type of dragon that specializes in aerial combat, landing only to rest. As wyverns age, their bodies become more aerodynamic and streamlined. The oldest are the venerable ancient wyverns, who possess powerful magicks. In-battle, wyverns are known for body slamming foes with Collapse, sometimes possess fire or wind-aspected magic, and on occasion have been known to divebomb at high speeds.

The common Wyvern is first encountered during In the Eyes of Gods and Men In the Eyes of Gods and Men, arriving to assist the heretic Alderique. Players need not defeat the Wyvern here, as it will retreat when Alderique is defeated. This same Wyvern returns during The Heretic among Us The Heretic among Us to assist the heretic Guillaime, where it may finally be defeated. Wyverns will also appear later during A Relic Reborn: the Hydra A Relic Reborn: the Hydra, assisting the titular beast. Players can also obtain a Wyvern Mount by trade Clan Mark Logs in Idyllshire.

Kingdom Hearts[]

Wyverns appear in Kingdom Hearts as a Heartless enemy in various worlds, shown as a purple (blue in Final Mix), dragon-like monster. They again appeared in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories in Hollow Bastion. In early Kingdom Hearts II trailers, Blue Wyverns can be seen flying in the sky in a cutscene before the Battle of 1000 Heartless; however, the Blue Wyverns were removed from the cutscene in the finalized version and were never seen in the game.

Etymology[]

A wyvern is a medieval European mythological winged creature with a dragon's head, reptilian body, two legs (sometimes none), and a barbed tail. They appear in many crests of Europe's ancient families, symbolizing strength. The word wyvern comes from wivere, which means serpent.
