Bartz's world is the first of three worlds of the Planet R in Final Fantasy V. It is one half of the planet, split from the world a thousand years prior to the events of Final Fantasy V. Bartz's world consists of two large continents east and west, and curving archipalegos to the south from meeting with a crescent-shaped island southeast. It is the birthplace of Bartz Klauser, Lenna Charlotte Tycoon, and Faris Scherwiz.

The game begins in this world and continues up until the events at the Ronka Ruins. After the first world is complete, the party travels to Galuf's world.

History[]

Before Final Fantasy V[]

A millennium prior to the events of Final Fantasy V, the necromancer Enuo traded his immortality for control over the Void, giving him the power to consume anything into nothingness. He was defeated by the twelve Sealed Weapons and consumed by the Void, which was contained within the Interdimensional Rift. The twelve weapons were sealed within Kuza Castle, and the four crystals of the world were separated. Thus the world itself was split to prevent any evil from harnessing the power of the Void again, as the entrance to the Rift became caught in the space between the two worlds.[1] Half of the Sealed Tome which documented the splitting of the world remained in the Library of the Ancients, but was illegible without the other half.[2]

The ancient Ronkan civilization arose, creating a floating city near the town of Gohn, and the Catapult hangar for storing ships below Crescent. The civilization collapsed 500 years prior to the events of Final Fantasy V, with its descendents residing in Jachol, a town visited by adventurers excavating remaining treasures from the civilization found in Jachol Cave.[3]

Thiry years prior to the events of Final Fantasy V, the Dawn Warriors from Galuf's world (the other half of the split planet), followed the warlock Exdeath to Bartz's world. Unable to kill him, they elected to seal him in a cave in Bartz's world. Believing it too dangerous to allow a demon from their world to be left in this one, Dorgann Klauser stayed behind to watch over Exdeath's seal.[4] Dorgann moved to the border town of Lix, where he married Stella and had a child with her ten years later,[note 1] named Bartz. Dorgann wished for Bartz to never know about the crystals, believing they were "not his burden to bear".[6]

At some point, Cid Previa studied in the Library of the Ancients, where he learned that one thousand years ago the crystals possessed power much greater than they did in modern times.[note 2] This prompted him to build amplification devices for the wind, fire, and water crystals.[7][2] As a result, the fire crystal brought prosperity to the kingdom of Karnak by making it much cheaper for smiths to build weapons,[8] while the water crystal brought safety to the kingdom of Walse by using purified water that kept monsters away.[9] Nonetheless, protestors from the Library of the Ancients warned that the use of the devices weakened the crystals, though the warning went unheeded, with Queen Karnak building a wall to keep them out.[8]

Final Fantasy V[]

In Castle Tycoon, King Alexander Highwind Tycoon noticed the wind behaving strangely, and departed for the Wind Shrine. He ordered his daughter, Princess Lenna Charlotte Tycoon, to watch over the kingdom while he investigated.[10] Meanwhile, Galuf Halm Baldesion, one of the Dawn Warriors, arrived in a meteorite (known as the Tycoon Meteorite due to where it landed) after noticing that Exdeath was beginning to reawaken.[11] Though he was the first of many travelers from his world trying to prevent Exdeath's return, he suffered amnesia upon his arrival.

The amnesiac Galuf met with princess Lenna as well as Dorgann's son, Bartz, who was traveling the world with his chocobo Boko. The three resolved to investigate the Wind Shrine themselves. In search of a ship, they noticed a pirate ship moving without wind, thanks to the sea dragon Syldra that was commanded by the pirate captain Faris Scherwiz (formerly Sarisa Scherwil Tycoon, separated from Lenna at a young age after being lost at sea and found by pirates[12]). After they unsuccessfully tried to steal her ship, Faris tossed the three to the brig but had a change of heart after recognizing Lenna's pendant and suspecting she was her long-lost sister.[13]

The group found the wind crystal already shattered atop the shrine. The shards gave off light and marked each of them with an essence of the four elements: courage and fire for Faris, devotion and water for Lenna, hope and earth for Galuf, wind and passion for Bartz. King Tycoon appeared and named them the Light Warriors, warning the four of an evil that is trying to destroy the other crystals. The crystal shards entrusted themselves to the party, providing them with the first set of job classes.[14]

The group traveled to the water crystal located in Walse, though they lost their ship and Syldra along the way and resolved to flying by Tycoon's wind drake, Hiryuu. They attempted to encourage King Walse to disable the crystal amplification device, but he declined, not wanting to endanger the town, and assured Lenna the crystal was safe.[15] Shortly after, the Walse Meteorite fell near the tower, and the water crystal was destroyed by a raging Garula possessed by Exdeath,[note 3] and the tower sunk. The warriors picked up more crystal shards, and Syldra appeared and used last of her strength to rescue them before drifting away in the current.[18]

Cid Previa in Jail

Bartz and the Light Warriors used the Walse Meteorite to teleport to the Karnak Meteorite, which a werewolf had arrived[19][7][7] having come from Galuf's world to protect the fire crystal.[20] On suspicion of colluding with the werewolf, the Light Warriors were thrown in the Karnak Castle dungeon, where they met Cid, the inventor of the amplification devices, who had tried to shut them down himself and been arrested in the process. Karnak's chancellor hurried in and apologized to Cid, pleading for his help, and he agreed to on condition the Light Warriors were also released, allowing them to use the fire-powered ship to enter the Karnak Castle basement and shut down the fire crystal machine.[7] There, they found the possessed Queen Karnak and freed her before entering the crystal room. A Karnak soldier—also possessed—turned up the machine to its full power and the crystal shattered. The werewolf, recognizing Galuf, arrived to aid the the party's escape at the cost of his own life, and the castle exploded, with the warriors picking up three more crystal shards from the wreckage.[20]

Cid blamed himself for the crystals' destruction and holed himself up in Karnak's pub, until the party found Mid Previa, his grandson, in the Library of the Ancients. The sight of grandfather and grandson evoked something in Galuf's memory and he remembered his granddaughter Krile Mayer Baldesion, allowing him to tell the others of the evil warlock Exdeath.[11] Cid and Mid repaired the fire-powered ship and gave it to the Light Warriors to find the earth crystal. After an unsuccessful trip to Crescent, they learned from Cid and Mid that King Tycoon was spotted flying towards the abandoned town of Gohn.[21]

The party at Catapult.

Though the Light Warriors found King Tycoon in Gohn, they were led to a trapdoor and plunged into underground ruins, where they discovered the Catapult and an airship. Cid and Mid, having arrived there from Crescent, fixed it and gave it to the party, only to found that the possessed King Tycoon had lifted the Ronka Ruins. Cid and Mid reinforced the airship's hull with adamantite from Galuf's meteorite so the party reached the flying city, where they found King Tycoon outside the crystal room. The possessed king tried to attack them, but Krile, landing in her own meteorite, burst into the room saving the party and freeing Tycoon from possession, with Galuf's amnesia cured in the process. Nonetheless, they had arrived too late to stop the earth crystal shattering, freeing Exdeath (but also granting shards to the party).[22]

Galuf and Krile used Krile's meteorite to travel back to their world, but asked Bartz, Faris, and Lenna not to follow, as they would not be able to return to their own world if they did.[22] The three resolved to follow anyway, and with Cid and Mid's help, using adamantite from all remaining meteorites, they traveled to Galuf's world.

After Exdeath destroyed the crystals in Galuf's world, the two worlds merged once again.

Locations[]

Bartz's world consists of two large main continents to the east and west, with parts of the other world missing. Curving archipelagos at the bottom of both continents meet with a crescent-shaped island to the southeast, missing parts of the other world that would instead make it a long stretch of land connecting the two. A tiny island surrounded sits in the middle of the ocean between the continents, but is inaccessible by normal means.

Notes[]

Annotations[]

  1. Bartz is 20 during the events of Final Fantasy V,[5] and Exdeath was sealed 30 years prior to the events of Final Fantasy V.[4]
  2. The crystals would have been more powerful before the world was split, as Cid read that they were more powerful one thousand years ago.[7] However, he did not learn the reason they were split, as no one knew about the worlds being separated.
  3. The guards at the tower expressed surprise at Garula's actions and suspected he was under control.[15] Queen Karnak later confirmed being controlled at the fire crystal,[16] and after King Alexander Highwind Tycoon was freed from control at the earth crystal, Exdeath appeared,[17] showing him to be the one in control.
