Daughter of High Summoner Braska. Honest and determined, Yuna embarks on a pilgrimage to obtain the Final Aeon and defeat Sin. Yuna is learning the mystical art of summoning aeons—powerful spirits of yore.

Booklet description

Yuna is a playable character in Final Fantasy X, and the main protagonist of Final Fantasy X-2.

In Final Fantasy X, Yuna becomes a summoner like her father before her, and embarks on a pilgrimage to expel Sin, a monstrous creature that terrorizes the world of Spira. She meets Tidus who teaches her there is more to life than sacrifice. In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna is a sphere hunter on a personal quest to uncover the mystery behind a movie sphere, and becomes involved in rising political tensions and an ancient force that threaten to end Spira's Eternal Calm.

Yuna in Final Fantasy X is the only character who can summon aeons into battle, with her Overdrive allowing her to summon an aeon with their Overdrive already full. Her Sphere Grid path grants her curative and defensive Wht Magic abilities, and she equips rods and rings. Her Celestial Weapon, Nirvana, gives all her spells one MP cost. In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna's default dressphere is a Gunner, and her special dressphere is the Floral Fallal.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Yuna - Portrait

In Final Fantasy X, Yuna wears an ensemble similar to, but widely varied from, those worn by Yevonites: a purple pleated, flower-patterned hakama; black boots; a black spaghetti-string camisole under a white sash that wraps around her neck and over her chest; and a yellow patterned obi with a chōchō musubi knot and a decorative obidome to clinch the cords. Two separate, kimono-like pink and white sleeves secured by purple cords complete the outfit. The design of her staff is based on the Khakkhara, a staff used by practitioners of Buddhism.

Yuna has shoulder-length brunette hair. She wears a blue-beaded earring on her right ear, hidden by a lock of her hair, woven into blue beads with gold rings around the larger, middle bead. She wears a silver necklace of a hibiscus flower along with a matching ring on the pinky of her right hand. She also wears a silver ring on the middle finger of her left hand and two bracelets, one beaded and one silver, on her right wrist. Yuna has heterochromia: her left eye is blue, while the right is green to represent her half-Al Bhed heritage, though without the characteristic spiral.

In Final Fantasy X-2, two years later, Yuna has transformed with a new revealing dress style and a more adventurous personality. Yuna retains her beaded earring and silver hibiscus necklace, but her hair is cropped shorter, resembling Tidus's hairstyle, with a red braid hanging down to her ankles.

Yuna's attire changes for each dressphere, with details that distinguish her from Rikku and Paine. Yuna's default appearance is the Gunner dressphere, an outfit given to her by Rikku in Final Fantasy X: Eternal Calm. She dons a modified halter-neck top with the symbol of the Zanarkand Abes across the chest and a pink hood. She wears yellow armbands over her biceps, a black bracelet on her left wrist, and denim bootyshorts. She carries a pouch on her left hip over an ankle-length blue and white half skirt and wears laced knee-high boots. Wearing the Gunner dressphere in combat, she wields her signature Tiny Bee pistols.

In the other dresspheres, Yuna wields her original summoning staves, the Nirvana, Tidus's Brotherhood and Caladbolg swords, a blue variant of Rikku's dagger blades, and Auron's Blurry Moon katana. Her deck theme for the Lady Luck dressphere is spades and her Mascot dressphere is a moogle. Her special dressphere is Floral Fallal whose appearance is designed after the hibiscus flower; yuna is the Japanese name of the Sea Hibiscus, the flower on her obi and her skirt in Final Fantasy X. In a bonus cutscene where the girls spend time in a hot spring in Mt. Gagazet, Yuna wears a pink and cream halter bikini swimsuit.

Personality[]

I will defeat Sin... I must defeat Sin.

Yuna
FFX HD Yuna Render

Yuna is a kind, loyal, honest, polite and passionate humanitarian who strives to see the best in others and has a strong conviction to complete whatever task she feels is her duty. She is naive, always believing in the best of people, and places the needs of others above her own, becoming apologetic when she feels she has let someone down. Like most summoners, Yuna is a devout follower of Yevon's teachings. She hides her feelings of fear and sadness while encouraging her friends to express themselves in her place. She is willing to carry others' burdens and sacrifice everything she has to destroy Sin, giving up chances for her own happiness if it means helping others. Her interactions with Tidus make her question Yevon's teachings, and she becomes more direct and open. When her faith in Yevon is shaken, Yuna must find her own path in life and pursue her goals without the backing of faith.

In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna has a new lease on life. Though still unflinchingly polite, soft-spoken, and driven, she is now athletic, cosmopolitan, outspoken, and playful. Yuna has not only learned to think and desire for herself, but has developed a go-getter attitude, willing to jump headfirst into danger. She considers resolving issues through creative thinking, only considering violence as a last resort. From her time as a summoner, Yuna is determined to never again let anyone use her as a means to an end.

During her time with the Gullwings, Rikku serves as a role model for Yuna, as she mimics some of Rikku's eccentric behaviors and uses some of her expressions, though others reprehend her for this. Yuna has gotten in touch with her Al Bhed heritage by learning the language. Though Yuna's friends tease her for always getting dragged into trouble and being a pushover as she's unable to refuse a call for help, she can be stern and intimidating if angered. Yuna has developed a distaste for sacrifice in the name of victory and peace, a trait Tidus instilled in her.

Abilities[]

SendingWallpaper

Yuna performs the sending.

Yuna is a talented summoner despite her youth, besting her more experienced peers in aeon duels (albeit at times with her guardians' aid). She can even summon during a free fall. She performs the sending ritual to send the souls of the deceased to the Farplane, which involves her dancing and at one point, walking on a water's surface. She is adept at white magic, providing healing and support.

In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna has learned how to use dresspheres to imbue herself with new skills and can play blitzball and hold her breath for extended periods of time. She has also learned to speak Al Bhed. It is never specified if Yuna has natural singing talent, as she always sings while wearing the Songstress dressphere, implying that she could have obtained it from Lenne.

Final Fantasy X[]

I've done it! I have become a summoner!

Yuna

Yuna was born in Bevelle to a Yevonite father, Braska, and an unnamed Al Bhed mother. Yuna was four years old when her mother died in an attack from Sin during her journey to the Al Bhed Home to repair her relationship with her brother, Cid. Her death established Braska's resolve to become a summoner and defeat Sin.

A seven-year-old Yuna was left in Bevelle when Braska and his two guardians, Auron and Jecht, left to pilgrimage to Zanarkand. Braska obtained the Final Aeon and defeated Sin, perishing along with Jecht. Braska had requested Auron to bring Yuna to Besaid following Sin's defeat to ensure she'd live a peaceful life, but Auron was mortally wounded when he confronted Yunalesca, and only made it as far as the outskirts of Bevelle before passing on the request to Kimahri Ronso. Back in Bevelle, Yuna heard her father had defeated Sin and met Kimahri who took her to Besaid Village, placed her in the local temple's care, and stayed with her at her request. Yuna grew up with Wakka, Lulu, and Wakka's brother Chappu.

FFX HD Yuna Tidus Besaid Campfire

Yuna introduces herself to Tidus.

Braska's Calm lasted less than a year, and Yuna decided to follow in his footsteps and become a summoner despite her friends' objections. At 15 years of age, she became an apprentice summoner with Kimahri as her guardian. After Summoner Zuke quit his pilgrimage in the Calm Lands, his guardians, Lulu and Wakka, returned to Besaid and became guardians to Yuna.

Now 17 years old, Yuna heads into Besaid Temple's Cloister of Trials with Lulu and Kimahri to become a full-fledged summoner. She spends almost a day of prayer to the fayth, and when Wakka and a young man named Tidus arrive to check on her, Yuna emerges and summons her first aeon: Valefor. The villagers celebrate Yuna's achievement and she introduces herself to Tidus. The next morning, Yuna, Wakka, Lulu, Kimahri and Tidus depart Besaid on the ship S.S. Liki for Kilika.

En route, Yuna figures through Tidus's mention of Jecht being his father that he must hail from Zanarkand as he claims. Sin attacks the boat and destroys most of Kilika Port. Yuna sends the souls of the deceased to the Farplane, the plane of afterlife on Spira, so they would not transform into fiends. After obtaining Kilika Temple's aeon, Ifrit, and meeting a rival summoner named Dona, the group travels to Luca for the Besaid Aurochs' blitzball tournament for which Wakka and Tidus are to take part. When the party splits, Yuna, Tidus, and Kimahri search the city after hearing rumors of Auron being around. When Yuna worries about being separated, Tidus suggests using a whistle signal to find each other.

The Al Bhed Psyches kidnap Yuna to force the Aurochs to lose their blitzball game. Her guardians and Tidus save her before the Aurochs are about to play against the Luca Goers. Hearing an Al Bhed ship saved Tidus when he arrived in Spira, Yuna asks if Cid was there, but Tidus answers no. Yuna reveals to him her half-Al Bhed heritage, and how her mother told her to seek out Cid if she ever needed help.

Fiends attack the blitzball stadium and Auron appears to help dispatch them. The newest maester of Yevon, Seymour Guado, summons his aeon, Anima, to destroy the fiends and awe the spectators with its power. Auron and Tidus join Yuna's party as guardians and Yuna shows Tidus she has learned how to whistle as he had taught her. She explains she fakes cheeriness to hide her sadness and tries to help him do it too.

Yuna and Seymour Operation Mi'ihen

Yuna and Seymour watch Operation Mi'ihen.

While crossing the Mi'ihen Highroad, the party stops at Rin's Travel Agency to spend the night, and Yuna takes the time to make a sphere recording to her guardians containing her final farewells, which she intends to give to them before she will perform the Final Summoning. Unaware of what she is doing, Tidus joins her, and the two watch the sunset together, Tidus describing his Zanarkand to her as a metropolis out at sea that never sleeps.

The party arrives at the Djose shore to witness the untimely Operation Mi'ihen. The group runs into Kinoc, who is one of the four maesters of Yevon. Operation Mi'ihen ends in disaster due to Sin overpowering the Crimson Squad and their machina, which leaves Yuna to perform another sending. Seymour, who was there to supervise the operation, as well as aid in battle, asks to be Yuna's "pillar of strength".

When the party arrives at Djose Temple they meet another fellow summoner, Isaaru, who warns Yuna to be careful as summoners on their pilgrimage are disappearing. After receiving the aeon Ixion, the group spends the night at the local inn. Yuna oversleeps and rushes after the others who make fun of her messy hair. They set off for the Moonflow, and while crossing the banks via shoopuf, the Al Bhed kidnap Yuna with the Extractor, but Tidus and Wakka save her.

After arriving at the other side of the river, Tidus learns it was Yuna's Al Bhed cousin Rikku who piloted the Extractor. After talking with Rikku in private, Yuna makes Rikku her final guardian, and the assembled party heads for Guadosalam, the town of the Guado. Seymour welcomes them to his manor and shows Yuna and her guardians a sphere with images of the ancient Zanarkand, Yunalesca—the first summoner to have defeated Sin—and her husband, Zaon. Seymour proposes to Yuna, for the union would bring hope to Spira. To help make her decision, Yuna visits the spirits of her parents in the Farplane, but when they leave the spirit of Seymour's deceased father, Jyscal Guado, drops a sphere as Yuna sends him. The party passes through the Thunder Plains as Seymour has already departed to Macalania Temple.

FFX Thunder Plains Yuna's Room

Yuna watches Jyscal's sphere as Tidus stumbles into her room.

When they rest at a travel agency, Yuna learns from Jyscal's sphere that Seymour murdered him, but she does not reveal its contents to anyone. Near the end of their crossing of the Thunder Plains, Yuna announces she will marry, but will continue her pilgrimage. When the party reaches Lake Macalania, the Al Bhed make another attempt to kidnap Yuna, but she and her guardians fight them off. Since Yuna is escorted to Macalania Temple ahead of her guardians, she has already received Macalania's aeon, Shiva, by the time her guardians learn the truth about Seymour.

Yuna and her guardians confront Seymour over his crimes and the situation escalates when he attacks them and they are forced to kill him. Before Yuna can send him, the Guado force the party to flee the temple and they end up trapped underneath the ice of the frozen lake. Yuna explains she intended to wed Seymour in exchange for him to turn himself in for his crimes.

Sin whisks the party away to Bikanel Island. While the guardians reunite in the desert Yuna is nowhere to be found, for the Al Bhed already found her and took her to the Summoners' Sanctum in Home. The Guado attack the settlement and kidnap her to Bevelle to marry the now-unsent Seymour. Rikku reveals to Tidus the Final Summoning needed to defeat Sin not only kills Sin but the summoner as well, meaning Yuna will die if she goes through with her pilgrimage.

Yuna Seymour Wedding

Yuna's forced wedding to Seymour in Bevelle.

With help from the Al Bhed, Tidus and the other guardians travel to the Palace of St. Bevelle and crash Yuna and Seymour's wedding on Cid's new airship, the Fahrenheit. While her guardians are held at gunpoint, Yuna complies with Grand Maester Mika's ultimatum and her guardians are forced to watch the ceremony be completed. When Seymour orders her guardians killed, Yuna lets herself fall off the temple rooftop and summons Valefor in midair, who flies her to Bevelle Temple.

The guardians escape to the temple where they break into the Chamber of the Fayth. Yuna receives Bahamut, but the party is arrested once Tidus carries her out of the chamber. The maesters of Yevon put Yuna and her guardians on trial for treason, where it is revealed Mika is an unsent. They are branded traitors of Yevon for killing Seymour and imprisoned in the Via Purifico. Yuna, Lulu, Kimahri, and Auron escape the underground dungeon after Yuna bests Isaaru in an aeon duel. When the party reunites on the Highbridge, they encounter a slain Kinoc, defeat Seymour's fiendish form, and escape to the Macalania Woods.

Macalania

Yuna and Tidus together in the Macalania Woods.

Her faith in Yevon shaken, Yuna goes off to the spring to be alone with Kimahri keeping watch. Tidus goes after her, and, having discovered the truth behind the Final Summoning, apologizes for his eagerness to defeat Sin and talking how they would visit his Zanarkand, believing he had only depressed her, but Yuna assures he had made her happy. Tidus wants her to quit the pilgrimage and stay with him, and while Yuna considers it, her sense of duty to the rest of Spira is too great. Tidus comforts her and they share a kiss in the spring. She resolves to go on, with Tidus promising he will always remain by her side.

Despite being branded traitors of Yevon, the party continues through the Calm Lands toward Zanarkand. At Mt. Gagazet Yuna explains her resolve to save Spira to the Ronso and Maester Kelk lets them pass. While traversing the mountain, they find a movie sphere left by Braska on the slopes in which he lets Yuna know whatever path she chose for her life, whether it be to duty or herself, he would be proud. Seymour Flux attacks them but they defeat him, Yuna reeling from a revelation concerning her goal: Sin is Jecht.

Ascending Gagazet, the party finds a mass of fayth performing a summoning. Bahamut's fayth reveals to Tidus "his Zanarkand" is a dream of the fayth, and that Tidus himself is a dream as well. He conceals this from the others. After defeating Sanctuary Keeper at the summit, with the ruins of Zanarkand in view, Rikku despairs about Yuna's impending fate. Yuna thanks her for all she has done and comforts her. Yuna unknowingly drops a sphere and Tidus views it. Having been recorded at the Mi'ihen Highroad, it contains Yuna's reflections and farewells for her guardians at the time, subtly revealing she had already fallen in love with Tidus.

Tidus Yuna Before Fighting Sin

Yuna with Tidus before fighting Sin.

Within the Zanarkand ruins, the party witnesses images of past summoners and guardians. They meet Yunalesca, the unsent summoner who would transform one of Yuna's guardians into the fayth for the Final Aeon to defeat Sin, as Braska did ten years ago with Jecht. Refusing to sacrifice any of her friends, and knowing that the Final Aeon will in time become the new Sin, Yuna declares the Final Summoning is a false tradition to continue Spira's cycle of death. Resolving to save Spira without the falsity of Yevon's teachings, the party fells Yunalesca, ending the tradition of the Final Summoning.

Cid picks them up on his airship and Yuna meets her uncle for the first time. The party returns to Bevelle where they learn of Sin's cyclical existence from Maester Mika. Bahamut's fayth approaches Tidus and Yuna, who learn the means to approach Sin is the "Hymn of the Fayth", and the key to defeating Sin is its core: Yu Yevon, an ancient summoner who exists only to summon Dream Zanarkand. Yu Yevon was Yunalesca's father and the progenitor of the Yevon faith. To ensure the summoning is never halted, and that the mainlanders never find the city of dreams, Yu Yevon clads himself in an armor known as Sin.

With the airship, the party launches a head-on attack on Sin that allows them to travel inside it. The party encounters and defeats Seymour for good in his final form, and Yuna finally sends him. At Dream's End they find Jecht who transforms into Braska's Final Aeon. They defeat him and all of Yuna's aeons when Yu Yevon possesses them, and finally Yu Yevon himself. As Yu Yevon's summoning stops, Spira's cycle of death is put to an end. For Yuna, it is a bittersweet victory, for Sin's defeat heralds the disappearance of the aeons and those from Dream Zanarkand—including Tidus. Yuna proclaims her love for him and watches him jump off the airship into the Farplane.

Yuna Speech

Yuna announces the Eternal Calm.

Back at Luca, Yuna, now high summoner of the Eternal Calm, whistles by the ocean in the hopes Tidus will answer until Lulu sends for her. In the stadium, Yuna addresses the people of Spira the need to stay strong, welcome Spira's long-awaited peace, and rebuild their home. She concludes that the people lost, as well as "the dreams that have faded", should never be forgotten.

Final Fantasy X: Eternal Calm[]

An eternal Calm. A slightly chubby Wakka, and my 2 minutes, 41 seconds. It's not much...but it's enough. Still...it's okay to want more, isn't it?

Yuna
Yuna's decision Eternal Calm

Yuna decides to join Rikku on another journey.

Two years later, Yuna has led a quiet life back in Besaid, practicing holding her breath for extended periods to play blitzball, her best time being 2 minutes and 41 seconds. Wakka praises her for being able to stay underwater for so long, but Yuna thinks Wakka will always be the pro, though he has gotten a little chubby.

At the temple, Yuna sees Wakka talk to a man named Tasgio who is also happy to meet her. Tasgio came to Besaid to talk about his grandson who has joined the Youth League. Yuna contemplates that new groups have formed as everyone wants to be a part of the new age and rebuild Spira. Tasgio only wants what's best for his grandson, but struggles as they disagree a lot. Yuna tells Tasgio that he should talk to his grandson, believing that, though he's on a different path, he wants to rebuild Spira the same way as they all do.

At the outskirts of Besaid, Yuna approaches the bridge where Wakka catches up to her, to discuss an arrangement being made between her and the son of New Yevon's chairman. Yuna declines, knowing that he would only use her. A man named Yaibal arrives with a message from Youth League's leader, Nooj. Wakka tells Yaibal that Yuna is not interested in joining them and Yuna says she's not joining any group. Yaibal wonders if Yuna will start a group of her own.

Rikku arrives, having been traveling around Spira, salvaging ancient machina and teaching people how to use them. She shows Yuna an ancient sphere Kimahri found on Mt. Gagazet that shows someone bearing an uncanny likeness to Tidus imprisoned in Bevelle, lashing out the guards. This motivates Yuna to journey again, and Rikku gives her new clothes to go "incognito" due to her celebrity status.

Yuna leaves to join the Gullwings, an Al Bhed sphere hunting group led by Rikku's sibling Brother and his two friends, Buddy and Shinra. The group includes Paine, a mysterious young woman who keeps to herself and joined the Gullwings shortly before Yuna.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Who's Lenne? Why...why am I so mad? Who the heck is Lenne!

Yuna
FFX-2 Yuna FMV

Yuna confronts Logos, Ormi, and Leblanc.

With their airship, the Celsius, Yuna, Rikku, and Paine travel Spira in search of treasure spheres. They gained a rivalry with the Leblanc Syndicate and its leader, Leblanc, stole Yuna's Garment Grid to perform a concert in her likeness. Rikku and Paine crash the concert in Luca while Yuna dons a moogle costume as disguise and keeps a low profile. When Rikku and Paine chase Leblanc and her two henchmen, Logos and Ormi, out to the docks, Yuna joins the battle and reclaims her Garment Grid. Afterward, Yuna finds herself dancing uncontrollably being overcome by someone else's excitement.

The Gullwings explore the recently discovered Floating Ruins at the peak of Mt. Gagazet and run into Leblanc, Logos, and Ormi again, racing them to the top. Leblanc and her goons get stuck and the girls claim the treasure sphere that contains images of the ancient Zanarkand.

Yuna wants the sphere

Yuna wants the awesome sphere in Kilika.

News spread about an "awesome sphere" discovered in Kilika drawing the attention of both the Youth League and New Yevon. Yuna believes if the two factions cannot decide who should have the sphere, the Gullwings should take it. They seize the sphere whose footage shows the mysterious man standing before a large weapon, mentioning someone named Lenne. Yuna doubts the man is Tidus and wonders who Lenne is.

Having seen the sphere, Yuna decides to return it. During her mini-concert on the deck of the Celsius that night, she gets angry and storms off to bed. The next morning Yuna dreams of her and Tidus being gunned down by soldiers in front of the machina weapon shown in the sphere, though Rikku tells Yuna to "blame it on her new jammies" since she slept wearing the Songstress dressphere.

Bevelle underground

The Gullwings and Leblanc Syndicate find the Bevelle Underground.

The awesome sphere is returned to either the Youth League or New Yevon, and it is learned from Nooj or Baralai the colossal weapon is called Vegnagun. Leblanc, Logos, and Ormi broke into the airship while they were away and stole the broken sphere they obtained from the Zanarkand Ruins. Yuna, Rikku, and Paine steal uniforms from members of Leblanc's gang to sneak into Chateau Leblanc in Guadosalam where they discover Leblanc already had the other half of the broken sphere and stole theirs to make it whole. Leblanc, Logos, and Ormi fight them, but afterward, Leblanc lets the girls watch the restored sphere.

From the sphere, it is learned Vegnagun hides underneath Bevelle. Forming a truce with their rivals, the sphere hunters enter the underground passage in the Bevelle Temple formed after the fayth's disappearance brought about by Yu Yevon's defeat. In a secret complex filled with machina, the YRP reaches Vegnagun's lair and faces an antagonistic Bahamut. Yuna begs it to stop, but the girls are forced to fight it. The sphere hunters find Vegnagun is gone and a large hole is left in its place.

Shuyin and yuna

Yuna encounters Shuyin in the Farplane.

Fiends pour out of the temples, and the leaders of the Spiran leading factions—Nooj, Baralai, and Gippal—go missing. Following the battles with aeons in their respective temples, deep holes are left behind in the Chambers of the Fayth where Shinra says the fiends are coming from. After defeating Ixion in Djose Temple, its surprise death blow attack sends Yuna falling into the chamber's hole and she lands in the Farplane. She finds herself wearing the Songstress dressphere that emits pyreflies and she encounters the mysterious man from the spheres who reveals himself to be an unsent named Shuyin.

Calling her Lenne, Shuyin tells Yuna he despises Spira's inability to change after a thousand years as everyone continues to fight. He plans to use Vegnagun to destroy Spira to end all wars and avenge Lenne's death. As Shuyin embraces Yuna she feels emotions that aren't hers and wonders if they belong to Lenne.

Shuyin's spirit has possessed Baralai to travel to the heart of the Farplane, and Nooj and Gippal have been following their friend to save him. Nooj and Gippal give Yuna spheres for Paine and follow Baralai deeper into the Farplane. Frustrated with getting more questions than answers, Yuna tries to escape the Farplane. Close to giving up, she hears a familiar whistle and sees an image of Tidus and follows him to emerge in the Bevelle Underground.

FFX-2HD 1000 Words

Yuna sings "1000 Words" alongside Lenne's spirit.

Back on the Celsius, Yuna tells everyone what happened. Throughout Spira, tension rises between the Youth League and New Yevon with their leaders missing, so Yuna performs a concert on the Thunder Plains to express Shuyin's hatred of war and unite everyone. During the concert, Lenne's spirit appears from the Songstress dressphere. It is revealed Shuyin and Lenne were gunned down by Bevelle soldiers after she stopped him from activating Vegnagun a thousand years ago.

Lenne was a famous songstress and summoner from the ancient Zanarkand who was called to the front lines during the Machina War, and Shuyin had tried to use Vegnagun to save her. When she died her memories coalesced into a sphere, which the Gullwings now use as the Songstress dressphere. Now knowing Lenne chose her to help Shuyin's spirit rest in peace, Yuna plans to try talking to him and tell him how Lenne felt.

Yuna Tidus X-2

Yuna reunites with Tidus.

Using one of the holes in the temples, YRP descends into the Farplane in search of Shuyin and Vegnagun. Bahamut's fayth appears to Yuna and explains the aeons were corrupted by Shuyin's despair, and thus had fought her. When Yuna learns of Nooj's plan to draw Shuyin to possess him and then take his own life, she objects, wishing not to repeat the actions taken to defeat Sin, her plan to convince Shuyin to yield for Lenne's sake. After destroying Vegnagun and besting Shuyin, Lenne's spirit puts Shuyin's hatred to rest and they fade away together.

Bahamut's fayth asks if Yuna wants to reunite with Tidus. If she accepts, Tidus will surface off the Besaid coast and a joyous reunion is celebrated.

Final Fantasy X-2.5 ~Eien no Daishō~[]

Final Fantasy X-2

Yuna on the cover.

After Yuna reunites with Tidus on the beach, everyone returns to the village for a welcome party. During the preparations, Yuna visits the temple where the village elders have been waiting for her return. She stays with them for a long while, telling them about her exploits as a sphere hunter. The elders are comforted by her presence, as with the influence of Yevon's teachings fading from Spira the elderly, who had lived by them, feel displaced. Seeing their struggles makes Yuna feel guilty.

She goes looking for Tidus and finds him fallen asleep in a boat by the beach. She takes the boat out, and when Tidus awakes he finds it is dark and stormy. Yuna tells him about the guilt she feels for Yevon's downfall, but Tidus disagrees and the two argue. When Tidus attempts to kiss her she refuses, but after making up she proclaims she wants to be with him forever.

While trying to return to Besaid, Yuna and Tidus get lost at the stormy sea and end up shipwrecked on an uninhabited island that resembles Besaid. They find two stone statues pointing in a certain direction that leads them to the area where the village would otherwise be, but there is no village. Tidus hypothesizes they had traveled a thousand years into the past.

They explore the forest hoping to find a clue on how to return home when Tidus mistakes a bomb for a blitzball and is killed. Yuna passes out from the shock and dreams of speaking to someone who claims to be a god and questions her regarding her relationship with Tidus. Yuna describes Tidus as an ordinary boy whom she met the day she became a summoner and whom she fell in love with during her pilgrimage. She is sad her feelings cannot be fulfilled now, but the god tells her he will cast a spell that will suppress those feelings up until the day she became a summoner, but not erase them, with the possibility of them returning if something were to trigger it.

Tidus wakes Yuna up and they find themselves alone in a place that resembles the Besaid Temple. They come across the statues of the gods people worshiped before the time of Yevon: Kush, goddess of food and shelter; Velm, god of safety; Slone, god of quenching regret; Arb, god of knowledge; Luchel, god of war; Kanaela, goddess of protection from darkness; Meiyou, goddess of light; and Guarudo, god of rest.

They leave the temple and come across a frail summoner woman called Kush from Bevelle. She is not the goddess as per the statue but had only borrowed that name. After explaining the role of summoners in the Machina War, the Bedohl (the old name for the Al Bhed), and naming a different star as the brightest on the night sky than Yuna is familiar with, Yuna understands this is a different world and Kush disperses into pyreflies.

Yuna senses the presence of another summoner and tells Tidus they must meet with him to find a way back home. Tidus senses danger and tells Yuna to run, but Yuna hesitates as she fears Tidus will disappear like Kush. Yuna has a vision of Kush in the forest with her guardian, Velm, and hears the voice of the summoner she is searching for but is told that Tidus must kill a certain girl if they wish to return home together.

Yuna tells Tidus she wants to be alone for a while and goes out for a walk. She thinks about her time spent with Tidus so far and how she wants them to understand each other's suffering. Yuna is reluctant to tell Tidus about the god's order for him to kill a girl, as she knows he would carry it out for her sake. She runs into Kush standing at an altar who tells her about the summoner Ifarnal from one thousand years ago who was the one who appeared in her dream and helped bring Tidus back to life. Ifarnal's real name is Joit. Kush asks about Yuna's feelings for Tidus, to which she replies that being with him was somewhat painful. Kush explains that Tidus had understood her desire to be alone.

Yuna spots the names of the gods carved on a stone beside the altar from which summoners and guardians adopted them. Kush makes a deal with Yuna that she will bring her to Ifarnal provided that Yuna does not send her to the Farplane before shining brightly and dispersing into pyreflies.

Yuna finds herself on a rusty boat with a skinny old man with long white hair who is revealed to be Ifarnal, now known as Joit. He explains he is no longer the muscular redhead he once was, and that the name "Ifarnal", or god of beauty, is no longer appropriate for him. He tells her about the fayth and that while in Yuna's world they were created by Yunalesca for summoners to fight Sin, the fayth during the Machina War were created by the summoners themselves with the help of someone they shared deep feelings with. Ifarnal shows Yuna a scene in which she blushes in embarrassment. Ifarnal apologizes and explains there are "easier" ways to make a fayth. The summoner and fayth must share a mutual sympathy to summon an aeon, something which Joit says he was not able to do adequately. He explains the island she was on was "summoned" by him, created with the use of an uncountable number of fayth.

Ifarnal tells Yuna to go down into the cabin, which reeks of dead bodies. Inside is a chocobo surrounded by pyreflies, i.e. another "summon". Yuna encounters four robotic Bedohl, three male and one female, holding a bomb that looks like a blitzball, the one that exploded on Tidus. Joit explains they, along with him, had escaped the island during the war on this boat but ended up having to return after one week due to there being too many enemies at sea. By that time the war had settled, and the era of the temples and Yevon began, leading to the execution of the Bedohl.

Yuna asks if the boat is real or a summon, and Joit replies it must be real as he stopped the summon, unable to continue due to inadequate bonding with the fayth. Yuna dashes outside, realizing they have returned to the Besaid of her world. A mass of pyreflies gathers to form Briar, whom Yuna remembers as a man who was dispatched from Bevelle to Besaid. Joit and Briar know each other (as they were Ifarnal and Velm in their past). Ifarnal orders the Bedohl on board to eliminate Briar using the bomb, which misses and kills Joit instead who vanishes into pyreflies. Briar asks where Kush is, but Yuna does not know, deciding to keep quiet about Tidus's order from Ifarnal to kill her. Briar realizes the reason he, an unsent, can exist like this, is because he was beckoned by Kush's feelings. Now alone on the boat, Yuna tries to whistle, believing Tidus will come running, but hesitates.

Meanwhile, Besaid Village is in chaos as everyone interrogates Tidus, who had returned to their world alone, on Yuna's whereabouts. Tidus explains that to bring Yuna back they must find a man named Briar as per orders he had received in the other world. Tidus finds Yuna at the beach and explains to her about Kush and the power she gave him to return to their Besaid, and how he must find her. Using the power, they find a frail Kush sitting in a chair, but Yuna sees she is just a beckoning. Briar appears, relieved to reunite with Kush. He thanks Tidus and Yuna for helping them meet before they disappear together. With Kush gone, the power she had granted Tidus vanishes and Yuna and Tidus return to the village.

Tidus and Yuna in zanarkand

Yuna and Tidus in the Zanarkand Ruins.

Due to the Celsius having malfunctioned, Tidus and Yuna travel to the Zanarkand Ruins on foot. They stand on the spot where they once had a bonfire during her pilgrimage and Yuna asks Tidus if he's real and not just a dream. Tidus explains his theory of the fayth reassembling his pyreflies, but that he might still be a dream. Yuna asks if he will disappear, but Tidus says they should just cherish each other. Yuna hugs Tidus before playfully pushing him into the water below and sees he did not disappear. She smiles, praying they can be together forever. However, Yuna knows she beckoned him after the incident on the island via her feelings for him, and if Tidus realizes this he will disappear, as what occurred when Briar realized he was beckoned via Kush's feelings. She stands in the same place Tidus stood two years ago when he told his story to the others, bringing the story full circle.

Final Fantasy X-2: Last Mission[]

I'm a different person now. I don't feel like I need to keep busy anymore. I'm fine with staying in one place and taking it easy.

Yuna to Rikku and Paine
Yadonoki-Tower-HD

The girls arrive at Iutycyr Tower.

Over the next three months after the Gullwings dismantled Vegnagun and felled Shuyin, they have gone their separate ways. One day, each girl receives a letter that calls the trio back together at Luca to explore the newly discovered Iutycyr Tower. As they explore the ruins they discuss what they had been doing since they had separated. Rikku has continued working on missions and thinks Yuna doesn't want to see her anymore, but Yuna denies it. Paine has something she needs to say to the others but won't reveal what and Yuna and Rikku don't pry.

Last Mission Floor 30 YRP

Yuna talks about her return to life on Besaid.

Yuna had needed a change when Tidus was gone, which is why she had joined the Gullwings, but is now fine with a relaxed life in Besaid, although she is planning on doing something soon. She mentions meeting someone but doesn't say who. Rikku is jealous Yuna has settled down, something Rikku feels she's unable to do. She says Yuna is wasting her life away while Yuna accuses Rikku of fooling herself by keeping busy and worrying about others too much. The content of this conversation changes depending on the particular version of the game. The Japanese dub specifies that Yuna has been spending time with Tidus. This is also alluded to in the English version of the game by Rikku's mention of him "being back" in Besaid.

Paine had sent the letters because she felt something was amiss during her lone travels across Spira since they split up, and wanted the trio to have another adventure like they used to. She had made up the part about something worth seeing at the top of the tower, but Yuna insists they keep going.

Iutycyr Tower Floor 70

The girls discuss how different they are.

The girls learn they have changed and fear growing further apart as long as they are together. Yuna realizes they all think differently and believes they had gotten along before only because they had to work together. Once the group reaches the top they find a broken-down machina. The girls decide to go their separate ways but to always cherish the time they had together. With their friendship renewed, the machina springs to life and their adventures continue.

Hello, and welcome to Besaid, home of the Yevoners. I am the priestess Yuna.

Yuna to Chuami and Kurgum

Artwork of Yuna for the audio drama (30th anniversary exhibition version).

Six months later, at the request of Baralai—Chancellor of Spira Council—two youths named Chuami and Kurgum travel from Bevelle to Besaid to meet with Yuna, who has returned to the mannerisms and dress style of her summoner days. She is now a priestess acting as an advisor to the Yevoners, a group that follows Yevon's moral teachings while praying for peace and accepting the way others live.

Kurgum shows Yuna a sphere recording of two shoopufs at the Moonflow. The shoopuf was the last of its kind, but it mysteriously reappeared one morning, causing Yuna to believe the shoopuf had been beckoned. Kurgum asks Yuna to accompany him and Chuami back to Bevelle and address the Council. When Yuna refuses, Chuami tells her about having met Tidus, who now resides in Bevelle and appeared injured, compelling Yuna to take action.

As Chuami, Kurgum, Yuna, and Wakka stop at the Moonflow on the way to Bevelle, they see the shoopufs and a crowd of onlookers where half of the people are illusions created by the pyreflies. They see a father and daughter with the illusion of the girl's mother who answers her request for them to go home together, which stuns the group since the illusions normally can't hear or speak. Kurgum insists the illusions should be sent to the Farplane, but Yuna says they don't have the right to interfere with the reunion.

Returning to Bevelle, they find Sin has been reactivated, possibly beckoned by someone, and Yuna rushes to meet with Tidus. Yuna had previously told Chuami that Tidus is her boyfriend, but when Chuami and Kurgum eavesdrop on the conversation between the two, it seems they are breaking up. Yuna is jealous of Tidus's friend, Marphie, but soon tells him she doesn't care as she has already got another person she likes. Tidus asks who it is but Yuna tells him it's someone he doesn't know and leaves.

Chuami and Kurgum part ways with the latter accompanying Yuna and Wakka, and the former returning to Besaid with Tidus. On a ship with Lulu and Chuami, Tidus says he wants to follow Yuna and the others on her new journey since he promised to be with her forever. Elsewhere, Yuna delivers a speech to a crowd in a stadium, proclaiming she will defeat Sin once more.

Spoilers end here.

Final Fantasy X[]

Yuna summons ifrit

Yuna summoning Ifrit in Final Fantasy X.

In Final Fantasy X Yuna serves as a Summoner and a White Mage, being the only character able to summon aeons, and learning the majority of the Wht Magic spells on her Sphere Grid path. Yuna equips rods as weapons and wears rings as armor. Her physical stats are low, but her Magic, Magic Defense, Evasion, and Agility are high (her agility even exceeds Tidus's using the default Sphere Grid). Yuna's Overdrive is Grand Summon, which allows her to summon an aeon with a full Overdrive gauge. Her Celestial Weapon is Nirvana, and is one of the easiest to acquire. Yuna is the only party member who briefly replaces Tidus as the field character.

In Final Fantasy X-2 Yuna is the main playable party member. Her default dressphere is the Gunner. Her Mascot dressphere is a moogle, and her special dressphere is Floral Fallal, where she dresses as a large purple flower. In her Trainer dressphere, Yuna's pet is a dog called Kogoro that resembles aeon Yojimbo's dog. Yuna can participate in blitzball and play the Gunner's Gauntlet minigame in Besaid.

During the opening mission, the player can find an oversized moogle hiding among the crates in Luca's docks, who is Yuna in disguise. Approaching her is necessary for 100% completion without New Game Plus.

Musical themes[]

Yuna has two themes attributed to her named "Yuna's Theme". The one from Final Fantasy X is a remix of "Suteki Da Ne (Isn't It Wonderful?)", the theme of her romance with Tidus. The one from Final Fantasy X-2 is an entirely new composition and an upbeat pop tune.

An arrangement of her theme from Final Fantasy X also appears in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy as her world map theme. This version is also included in the Final Fantasy XV music player. "Yuna's Theme" is also a battle music track in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.

"High Summoner's Daughter" is another track in Final Fantasy X associated with Yuna, which plays when Tidus talks to her for the first time in Besaid, when viewing Braska's sphere on Mt. Gagazet, and on the deck of the airship before the final dungeon.

Another theme associated with Yuna in Final Fantasy X-2 is "Yuna's Ballad". An album dedicated to Yuna and Tidus is Feel/Go Dream: Yuna & Tidus.

Yuna's character model was used in the development of Final Fantasy XIII before the actual characters were finished.

Dead Fantasy[]

DF Yuna

Yuna in Dead Fantasy.

For more information, see Dead Fantasy Wiki: Yuna.

Yuna is a primary character in the fan-made Dead Fantasy series, being the first character to appear. She fights alongside Rikku, Tifa, Rinoa, Kairi, and Cloud against certain characters from Dead or Alive; her main opponent is Kasumi.

Throughout Dead Fantasy I Kasumi and Ayane chase her in ancient ruins. When Ayane is about to take Yuna down, Rikku arrives to save her. As they overpower Kasumi and Ayane, Hitomi joins the fray until Tifa arrives to turn the tide of the battle. Throughout Dead Fantasy II Yuna fights Kasumi, and the fight ends with Yuna knocking Kasumi into the conjure portal that Rinoa had created, which leads them to fight in Dead Fantasy IV, where Yuna and Kasumi battle on the flower fields reminiscent of Final Fantasy VIII. One of the Kasumi α clones interrupts their match forcing Yuna to spherechange into her summoner form and call forth her aeons as Kasumi aids Yuna to fight her antagonistic clones. The aeons are defeated and Yuna reverts. Cloud saves her and blasts the clones with his Limit Break. Kasumi promises to deal with the clones and Yuna rides away with Cloud on his motorcycle to search for Tifa.

Yuna is last seen with Cloud in Dead Fantasy V, where they spot a helicopter passing through a city. In Dead Fantasy IX, Yuna and Cloud were planned to team up to infiltrate DOATEC to save Tifa, but since Monty's death, the series ended up in a permanent hiatus.

Yuna Dead Fantasy Summoner Promotional Artwork

Promotional Artwork of Summoner Yuna with her aeons from Dead Fantasy IV.

Yuna does not have her long red braid, her blue-beaded earring on her right ear and her blue sash from her blue and white half-skirt when in her Gunner dressphere, and she has wristbands on both wrists. In her summoner outfit, she wears arm warmers. Yuna's fighting style is a Gunner mixed with self-defense techniques, and her hand-to-hand combat style is based on Self-Taught, which is Lili's fighting style in the Tekken series. Three of her moves are demonstrated in Dead Fantasy II: Heavy Languish, Femme Fatale and Divine Step. She carries an X-Potion and a Turbo Ether during Dead Fantasy II. In her Summoner form during the events in Dead Fantasy IV, she relies on her aeons and the way she summons is based on her appearance in Final Fantasy X.

Following Oum's death three years later, animator Uiyahan remade the original Dead Fantasy series where Yuna retains her main appearance in Final Fantasy X-2 without the long red braid and her silver necklace.

Her grunts are from Jun Kazama from Tekken 2 up to Tekken Tag Tournament, voiced by her Japanese voice actress, Shiho Kikuchi. In "Dead Fantasy 2020" by sWooZie however, she was voiced by her original voice actress, Mayuko Aoki.

Yuna has also appeared in the Dead Fantasy - Gee music video in her Songstress dressphere where she plays the role of the main vocalist and former leader of Girls Generation, Kim Taeyeon as Taeyeon's leadership within the group is given to Im Yoona in later years.

Following Oum's death, Uiyahan created a short music video as a tribute to him and his two of his music videos called Dead Fantasy- Say So. Yuna regains her original appearance from her Songstress dressphere.

Behind the scenes[]

Character creation[]

FFX-Yuna sendingConcept

Concept art of Yuna's sending.

She has lived her life up until now simply following the creed that she believed in but when her whole world is shaken she then has to pick herself up and find a new way forward with her own willpower. That was the kind of strength we wanted to show in her.

Yoshinori Kitase

[3]

The original concept for the story of Final Fantasy X was that "a person would reach the end of life at 17 years of age". That theme of "inevitable death" was carried over to become Yuna's fate in Final Fantasy X.[4] The developers wanted to depict a heroine who is not physically strong, but who has a strong will and determination.[3]

Art Director, Yusuke Naora, gave Yuna a more "tropical" design to go with the "oriental" theme, but Tetsuya Nomura wanted to give it a more Japanese feel.[5] In early development, character designer Tetsuya Nomura designed Yuna in a different outfit, but after learning Yuna would dance during the sending, he changed it to a furisode to have something that would "flow" as she danced.[6]

FFX tattoo system concept

Tattoo system explained in Final Fantasy 25th Memorial Ultimania Vol.3.

One of the character development system proposals for Final Fantasy X was a "tattoo system" where characters would have a 100x100 grid, and upon level up could place "tattoos" down to boost stats and learn abilities. Different tattoos would confer what abilities the bearer could use. Yuna would have the Bahamut tattoo on her back (and thus her kimono leaves her back bare).[7]

When asked about Yuna's drastic wardrobe change in Final Fantasy X-2, Tetsu Tsukamoto, the game's alternate costume designer, replied: "From a planning standpoint, I would say that the differences are due to the changes in Spira between Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. Final Fantasy X had more of a darker, religious feel, whereas in Final Fantasy X-2, there is a huge cultural change. I think those changes are reflected in the character designs."[8]

In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna's change in personality is connected to her quest in finding a new role for herself since she is no longer burdened by a summoner's responsibilities. Through Rikku's influence, Yuna begins finding her new self. With her new clothes and attitude, Yuna can be seen as a different person, but inside, she is the same Yuna from Final Fantasy X. "It is her realization of a stronger and more confident woman inside herself that drives the story of Final Fantasy X-2."[9]

Curiosities[]

Yunaffx2poster

Final Fantasy X-2 key art.

After the battle with Biran and Yenke on Mt. Gagazet, they say they will make a statue of Yuna with a "grand horn on its head", possibly a reference to summoners in past Final Fantasy games who are often depicted with horns.

In the background of Yuna's Final Fantasy X-2 key art, the words "Yuna Live" are written in Spiran script.

Yuna is one of two Final Fantasy characters to have heterochromia, the other being Ravus Nox Fleuret from Final Fantasy XV. Yuna is also one of few Final Fantasy main characters to be of mixed race, other examples being Cecil Harvey from Final Fantasy IV, Terra Branford from Final Fantasy VI, and Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII.

Voice[]

Yuna's Japanese voice actress is Mayuko Aoki. She shares her voice actress with Seven from Final Fantasy Type-0 and Selphie from her Kingdom Hearts appearance. Tidus's and Yuna's characters were fleshed out more after their respective voice actors, Morita Masakazu and Aoki Mayuki, were cast; the two were originally motion actors for Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy X was their first attempt at voice acting. While actors do their recordings separately nowadays, back then it was the standard to have them all working as a group. Yuna was originally written to speak in a different way, but after hearing Aoki perform, she was changed to a more formal manner of speech.[5]

Yuna's English voice actress is Hedy Burress. While voicings Yuna in Final Fantasy X, Hedy Burress tried to translate duty, respect, and honor while also trying to retain her gentleness and femininity because of her appearance, but found the dichotomy to balance the two. She considers her relation with Tidus to be "humanizing" as it balances Yuna between her duty to Spira and her emotional side. Hedy stated she tries to relate to the character she's portraying and joked she wasn't able to save the world so that part "escapes" from her portrayal.[10]

In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna has a singing voice during her performances. Her Japanese singing voice is Koda Kumi, who also reprises Yuna's song and dance within her "real Emotion" official music video. Yuna's English singing voice is Jade Villalon, the main vocalist of the band Sweetbox.

In Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster, Yuna occasionally utters lines in Japanese during battle. The lines were done by her English voice actress, Hedy Burress. This is because in the original Final Fantasy X-2: International + Last Mission Square got the English voice actresses to record the new English battle dialogue for the Festivalist and Psychic dresspheres, and recorded Japanese lines one might hear any time during a battle. For Yuna these new lines are Zenkai de ikuyo—! (全開でいくよっ!?, lit. Let's give it our all!), Yūna, mairimasu (ユウナ、まいります!?, lit. Yuna's here), Oshimai (おしまい?, lit. And that's the end), and Kore de sayonara (これでさよなら?, lit. This is the end for you).

Amano Morning Song

Artwork of Yuna by Yoshitaka Amano.

Because the game's cutscenes were programmed around the Japanese voice work, the localization team faced the difficulty of incorporating the translated script with the rhythm and timing of the characters' lip movements, and almost all of it had to be rewritten to better match the animations. Once the voice recording was complete, sound editors would digitally speed up or slow down the audio clips to fill the character's allotted speaking time for each particular line, because the lengths of audio files were hardcoded.[11] The file constraints were not the only issue: the Japanese idea of dramatic writing is to speak slowly. This reflected in Yuna's cadence in some parts with long pauses between words. Some parts like this were covered by having the character ask themselves a question and then answer it, making the pause sound more natural.[11]

The head of localization, Alexander O. Smith, was the one to push for the change for Yuna's final words to Tidus in the Final Fantasy X ending from Arigatō (ありがとう?, lit. Thank you) to "I love you" despite resistance from the Japanese side of development. "I love you" had never appeared in a Final Fantasy game before because it is not something Japanese usually say, but Smith kept pushing for the change and it made it though to the localization.[11]

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia and World of Final Fantasy are the only games in which Yuna says the names of Tidus and her aeons, due to the option to change their names in Final Fantasy X.

Merchandise[]

Yuna has three action figures in the Final Fantasy Play Arts Action Figures series: two from her appearance in Final Fantasy X (a new figure was released to commemorate the HD release), and one from her appearance in Final Fantasy X-2. Yuna in both her Final Fantasy X summoner outfit, and her Final Fantasy X-2 Gunner dressphere, appears in Final Fantasy Trading Arts Kai Mini series of figures.

Yuna has a figure in the Final Fantasy X 1/6 Scale Figure Collection wearing her regular summoner outfit from Final Fantasy X; a pre-painted set of 1/6 scale PVC figures was made by Kotobukiya in 2001. Final Fantasy X Yuna Wedding Cold Cast is a limited edition statue of Yuna in her wedding gown. Yuna also has a Coca-Cola bottle cap figure released as part of a marketing campaign in Japan.

For Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna's Tiny Bee guns have been released as merchandise in the form of a controller for the PlayStation 2 console. The Final Fantasy X-2 "Yuna" Zippo lighter represents the Gullwings with the wing of a seagull embossed on the lighter. The Final Fantasy X-2 Minimum Collection set includes miniature figures of the YRP.

A 1/6 scale PVC statue of Yuna in her Gunner dressphere setup was produced by ArtFX of Kotubukiya. Yuna's special dressphere, Floral Fallal, was released as Final Fantasy Creatures Fan Book Vol 2 figure. Two official phone straps of Yuna for Final Fantasy X-2 were also released: one of Yuna in her Gunner dressphere, and another of her as a Songstress. Yuna's silver necklace from Final Fantasy X-2 has also been released as merchandise, as well as the matching pinky ring from Final Fantasy X.

Etymology and symbolism[]

Yuuna is the Okinawan word for Sea Hibiscus. This flower is on her obi, skirt, necklace, and pinky ring. In Final Fantasy X-2, her special dressphere Floral Fallal represents a hibiscus as well.

FFX-TidusYuna artwork

Promotional artwork of Yuna and Tidus by Tetsuya Nomura.

Yuna's and Tidus's characters may allude to the Chinese concept of Yin and Yang. Their placement in her promotional artwork with Tidus also refers to it. In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang are concepts used to describe how apparently opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent giving rise to each other as they interrelate. Many tangible dualities (such as light and dark, fire and water, and male and female) are thought of as physical manifestations of the duality of yin and yang. This duality lies at the origins of many branches of classical Chinese science and philosophy, as well as being a primary guideline of traditional Chinese medicine, and a central principle of different forms of Chinese martial arts and exercise.

Yin is the negative/passive/female principle in nature, and may allude to many other concepts e.g. the moon, shaded orientation, something covert or concealed, "of the netherworld", overcast or sinister.

Yang is the positive/active/male principle in nature, and may allude to many other concepts e.g. the sun, open, overt, and "belonging to this world".
