The Hill Gigas is an optional boss, and later, enemy in Final Fantasy II. It is first encountered on the Dreadnought inside a treasure chest, but later appears as a regular enemy in Deist Cavern and Mysidian Tower.

Stats[]

Battle[]

The first battle with a Gigas can be surprisingly difficult if the party is not ready for it. Like most creatures of his type, he is a muscle-bound brute with a high Attack stat. He does not cast any spells, instead relying on a physical barrage. Depending on the party's HP he may be able to knock them out in one hit. He boasts very high Defense and Magic Defense stats, making it difficult to land substantial hits on him. Even if the party's strongest member has 2000 HP and is almost as strong as a Gigas, only with Mythril or Gold armor, the player likely can't survive more than one battle.

Strategy[]

The Hill Gigas is easily put to sleep, and if the Crescent Sword was picked up earlier, it can be equipped and used to put the giant to sleep while the party dishes out damage. The player should cast Blink and Protect on the party to mitigate damage.

Etymology[]

Gigas is a popular term for races of giants in fantasy games. Gigas is a Greek word meaning "giant", originally used to describe the race of Gigantes in Greek mythology and is used in the scientific name, as the specific epithet, of hundreds of species of animals and dozens of plant species to denote their size.

The mythology and legends of many different cultures include monsters of human appearance but prodigious size and strength. Giant is the English word, coined 1297, commonly used for such beings, derived from one of the most famed examples: the gigantes of Greek mythology.
