The Anaconda is an enemy in the original Final Fantasy. In the original NES translation, it was referred to as the COBRA, while the Cobra was called an ASP.

It appears as a random encounter in the Cavern of Earth, and as a guardian in the Marsh Cave, guarding two chests. They are not difficult enemies to defeat, but they sometimes appear in groups. They should be simple to defeat if the party is well-trained, and spells can easily end a battle against a mob of Anacondas. The main concern of the Anaconda is its high Attack for the point in the game the enemy is found. It has low HP to balance this out. Its attacks can inflict the Poison status ailment.

Etymology[]

An anaconda is a large snake found in tropical South America. Although the name applies to a group of snakes, it is often used to refer only to one species in particular, the common or green anaconda, Eunectes murinus, which is one of the largest snakes in the world. Giant Anacondas are sometimes said to be as long as thirty meters but such snakes are considered urban myths by experts.

It was known as COBRA in the NES version. A cobra is a venomous snake from the family Elapidae native to the desert regions of Asia and Africa. Cobras are most easily recognized by the flap of skin that surrounds their heads in a hood-like shape. Cobra is also the Portuguese word for "snake."
