The Warriors of Light on an airship in Final Fantasy V.

Airships (飛空艇, Hikūtei?) and other aerial means of mechanized transportation in the Final Fantasy series are the most common form of transportation.

List[]

Final Fantasy[]

Airship of Light Warriors
Airship

This airship was piloted by the Sky Warriors hundreds of years ago, and is found and used again by the Warriors of Light after they raise it from the Ryukahn Desert using the Levistone. It is the scholar of Elfheim who redirects them to that location, once they obtained the Levistone.

In the remakes since Dawn of Souls, it is revealed that Cid of the Lufaine built it. This is the fastest means of transportation and there are no random encounters while using it. However, it can only land in open fields.

Final Fantasy II[]

Dreadnought[]

Dreadnought

The Dreadnought.

The Dreadnought was an airship built by the Palamecia Empire as a warship, and has the power to level whole towns. Firion and his party entered it after it abducted Cid's airship to rescue Princess Hilda and Cid and destroyed it by throwing the Sunfire in the Dreadnought's engine.

Cid's airship[]

Cid's Airship FF2DoS

Cid's Airship and the Dreadnought's base.

Never named, Cid's airship is the only airship in the world before the Dreadnought is finished. Cid flies it and uses it to ferry people, using the money he gets from ferrying people to upgrade it. Upon his death, he gives the airship to Firion's party to use. Cid's airship was to have its own music when flying in it on the world map, but it was only included as a bonus on music albums.

Final Fantasy III[]

CidAirship-Ff3

Initially, Cid's airship is found in the desert west of Kazus. Cid allows the Warriors of the Light to borrow his airship to save the kingdom of Sasune from the Djinn's curse. In the 3D remakes, Luneth and Arc meet the third party member, Refia, inside the airship, who decides to join them to save her father and the people of Kazus.

FFIIIDS Airship

Cid's Airship as seen on the World Map.

The airship is required to reach the Sealed Cave where the Djinn lies, as the lake in front of the cave prevents entrance by foot. At Cid's request, Refia and her surrogate father Takka later fit a Mythril ram on the airship's bow to destroy a boulder lying in Nelv Valley, in order to gain access to Canaan. Unfortunately, the airship is destroyed in the process.

According to Refia, she and Takka forged the parts for the ship in Kazus.

Enterprise[]

Invincible-Ff3

The Enterprise is a ship awarded to the player by Vikings for appeasing the sea serpent Nepto. Later, it is modified by Cid using the "Wheel of Time" to transform it into an airship. The Enterprise can only land on water. It is later shot down over Saronia.

The Enterprise derives its name from the famous American Carrier the USS Enterprise. It is also possible that the airship's name is a reference to Star Trek's spaceship USS Enterprise.

The Enterprise appears in a Field Music Sequence in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call.

Nautilus[]

FFIIIDS Nautilus

The Nautilus is a high-speed Saronian airship used to fly against intense winds. It is obtained after defeating the Garuda in Saronia. It is later enchanted to dive underwater. While in its submarine form, the party can explore the ocean floor and several dungeons that were previously inaccessible. The Nautilus is still available for the party to use after the Invincible is obtained, and is faster than the Invincible, but lacks the healing, shop, and Fat Chocobo benefits.

Invincible[]

Invincible-FF3
Ff3-invincible-interior

Inside the Invincible.

The Great Ship, Invincible, is the final airship found. It is found in the Ancient Ruins and obtainable only after awakening Unei. The Invincible does not land, rather, the party exits the airship via a ladder that hangs beneath it. Though it is not submersible nor as fast as the Nautilus, the Invincible can go into "high gear" allowing it to pass over small mountain ranges which previous airships of the game were unable to do.

It is unique in the fact that unlike other obtainable airships in the game, its interior can be visited. Inside are four beds for restoring HP and MP; shops for magic, weapons, armor, and items; a place to summon Fat Chocobo; and (in the 3D version) a moogle to access Mognet. The Invincible also sports a cannon which it fires at the beginning of a random encounter.

Final Fantasy IV[]

FFIV DS Airships

The airships (DS).

The Red Wings[]

The Red Wings are a fleet of five airships built by Cid Pollendina as its own military division in Baron. The Red Wings are commanded by Cecil Harvey in the opening, but command is soon given to Golbez. Golbez then uses the Red Wings to collect the remaining eight crystals. When the party returns from the moon to stop the Giant of Babil, the Red Wings are inexplicably in the command of Cid's apprentices to assist in fighting the Giant.

Enterprise[]

FFIVDS Enterprise

The masterpiece airship of Cid Pollendina, the Enterprise was the party's airship for much of the journey. It later acquires a crane attachment that allows it to ferry the Hovercraft over oceans.

Falcon[]

FFIVDS Falcon

A stolen aircraft from the Red Wings, the Falcon was at first vastly inferior and requires many upgrades and enhancements. The first enhancement was Adamantite hull plating which permitted it to fly over lava, and the second was a drill mounted on its bow to drill through dirt and rock which permitted it to re-open the passage between the Overworld and the Underworld.

Lunar Whale[]

FFIVDS Lunar Whale

The Lunar Whale, also known as Big Whale, is an airship that is bestowed on the party with the aid of the elder of Mysidia. It is capable of space flight to the Red Moon, and also contains "beds" and a mechanical Fat Chocobo. The only place it cannot fly over is the Underworld, presumably because it is too large to fly through the crater.

Final Fantasy V[]

FF5-Airship

An airship was discovered in some ancient ruins that would come to be known as the Catapult. Cid Previa and Mid Previa "discover" it at around the same time as Bartz, Lenna, Galuf, and Faris do.

Initially, it is able to fly over mountains as well as land on water, where it can be used as a regular, seafaring ship. Cid and Mid upgrade the airship using Adamantite, so that it can reach higher altitudes, being able to reach the Ronka Ruins. The Catapult is rediscovered in the merged world after Fork Tower's destruction. Cid and Mid rebuild it to double as a submarine.

The Airship and Hiryuu glitch loses the player their airship, meaning they cannot complete the game. The airship found in the Catapult uses a modified Falcon sprite from Final Fantasy IV.

Achievement icon.

Obtaining the airship in the iOS version gains the player the achievement "The Skies Are Yours!". The airship also appears in a Field Music Sequence in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call.

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals[]

Rouge airship

Rouge's airship.

Rouge's pirate airship[]

Airship used by Rouge and her pirate crew. It appears as a large, pink balloon, equipped with weapons such as poison gas canisters. The airship's first appearance is in the first episode, where it jumps out from the long grass to chase Prettz, with Rouge hoping to steal his motorbike.

After escaping, Prettz returns to hijack the ship in order to gain entrance to the Temple of the Wind. When Rouge captures Valkus, Prettz and Linaly, she flies them to Rouge Island where they are held prisoner. Prettz escapes and attempts to steal the airship, before Ra Devil's men invade and ruin his plans.

The airship houses a few interesting features, such as a microphone which Rouge uses to listen in on Valkus and Prettz, and a large net that drops from the hull which is designed to hold people hostage.

Iron Wing[]

IronwingA

The Iron Wing.

One of Tycoon's air force airships, captained by Valkus. The Iron Wing is a military airship, which second-in-command Gush captains during the time Valkus is held hostage by Rogue.

The Iron Wing first appears in Episode 1, where it is ordered by Queen Lenna to ensure that the Wind Crystal has not been stolen. After Valkus attempts to arrest Linaly and Prettz, the Iron Wing is attacked by Rouge and makes a quick getaway. It does not appear often for the remainder of the show, other than a few scenes of the army searching for the Wind Crystal.

However, nearing the end of the story, Gush pilots the Iron Wing to the Black Moon to confront Ra Devil. Here, the ship engages in battle with Deathgyunos and is almost able to defeat him. It undergoes repairs from the battle while Prettz and the heroes finish off Ra Devil for good.

Ra Devil's airship[]

Ra Devil airship

Ra Devil's airship.

A third unnamed airship, owned and piloted by the antagonist Ra Devil, is shown a few times throughout the show. It is somewhat bio-organic, with a large green monster face sprouting from behind it. The airship is also shown to be able to function underwater.

It only makes a few appearances, but has little importance to the plot other than enabling Ra Devil transport between Planet R and the Black Moon.

Final Fantasy VI[]

Blackjack[]

FF6 Blackjack IOS

The Blackjack is an airship and is one of two airships in the world, the other being the Falcon. It has a casino, an item shop, and a free recovery point.

Falcon[]

FF6 Falcon IOS

The Falcon is the second ship flyable by the party. One of the fastest vessels in the world, the Falcon was owned by Darill before her passing and entombed with her beneath the ocean.

Final Fantasy VII series[]

Highwind[]

Highwind 5

The Highwind.

The Highwind is the stolen airship acquired by Cid Highwind in Final Fantasy VII, and serves as a means of transportation for the entire party. Although it has no visible weapons, it is used during Cid's Limit Break named Highwind, where several missiles are launched from the ship.

In Final Fantasy Tactics, there is an errand related with this airship. Ramza's party must raise the Highwind from the ocean to the surface.

Shera[]

SheraAirship

The Shera.

The Shera (シエラ, Shiera?) is Cid's airship in all appearances after Final Fantasy VII, replacing the Highwind due to the destruction of the Highwind during the ending sequence of Final Fantasy VII. It is named after Cid's wife, Shera.

Structurally the Shera is quite different from the Highwind with a series of propellers arranged one of top of the other at the rear of the ship to serve as its propulsion, and a deck and cockpit with glass walls and flooring instead of an open deck.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

Balamb Garden Area 9

Balamb Garden floating in the ocean.

Balamb Garden[]

There are structures called Gardens that act as schools to help train and educate SeeD hopefuls. One such Garden is Balamb Garden; the player spends a lot of time here during the course of the game and is instrumental in enabling its ability to fly.

Balamb Garden is home to all kinds of things, including (but not limited to) a dormitory where the party may rest. The Card Club and Headmaster Cid can also be found in Balamb Garden during the first half of the game.

Galbadia Garden[]

Galbadia Garden 2

Galbadia Garden hovering in wait.

Another Garden school-like structure, and one that the party does not get to control. They visit the school during its time as an immobile complex, but later, when it is apprehended by the Galbadian Army, it is used against the party during the Battle of the Gardens and is the scene of a major turning point in the plot.

Ragnarok[]

Ragnarokairship

Ragnarok.

The Ragnarok is the primary airship, created by the nation of Esthar during the Sorceress War, it is heavily armed and capable of space travel. It was originally used, along with two others, to banish Sorceress Adel to space.

Squall Leonhart and Rinoa Heartilly encounter the ship while lost, adrift in space. They rid it of monsters and guide it back to their planet. Selphie Tilmitt, Zell Dincht, Quistis Trepe or Irvine Kinneas (depending on which character is not in the fighting party) eventually becomes the ship's pilot.

Final Fantasy IX[]

Airship Size Chart FFIX Art

Artwork of showing the various airships.

Most airships are Mist-powered, and thus only operate on Mist Continent at the start of the game. Airship technology was invented in Lindblum and its shipyards provide the continent with airships, their ally Alexandria having a single royal flagship, and numerous cargo ships skirt the skies.

Gates are constructed between borders to regulate airship passage between countries. Lately, there have been efforts to develop an airship not reliant on Mist that could thus explore higher and wider, Cid Fabool IX pioneering the concept with his Hilda Garde series of airships. None of the airships piloted by the player party rely on Mist, meaning players can explore the entire Gaia and do not use the border gates.

Cargo Ship[]

DaliEvent7

Cargo ship in Dali.

The cargo ship transports completed black mages from Dali to Alexandria. Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, and Princess Garnet stow away on board the airship and when Black Waltz 3 attacks the ship the tussle leads to an accident as they pass through South Gate to Lindblum region, but Garnet safely pilots the airship to Lindblum Castle.

Hilda Garde series[]

Hilda Garde Concept Stages FFIX Art

Artwork of the various Hilda Garde airships.

Cid Fabool IX, Regent of Lindblum and accomplished engineer, created the steam-powered Hilda Garde I airship, being the first of its kind. The airship is named after his wife, Hildagarde Fabool, but when Hilda learned of Cid's adultery she absconded with the Hilda Garde I and morphed Cid into an Oglop. The Hilda Garde I was then hijacked by Kuja.

Cid, with the help of engineer Zebolt, attempts to construct the Hilda Garde II to assist Zidane and his party. Though the resulting craft is inferior due to Cid's oglop state, the Hilda Garde II survives a flight from Treno to Alexandria, rescuing Garnet and Eiko from Kuja's assault on the royal city.

Once Cid is restored to human form after Hilda is recovered from Kuja's clutches, he embarks on a quest to construct a steam-powered airship surpassing Hilda Garde I. When the party returns from Mount Gulug, Cid presents the Hilda Garde III, allowing for effortless travel across Gaia. The Hilda Garde III serves as the party's airship until the events at the Shimmering Island.

Invincible[]

Stone visage at Oeilvert

The Invincible is the battleship commanded by Garland able to destroy entire cities with a great beam of light from the bottom of the ship, and house the souls of the deceased. Princess Garnet has faint memories of "the eye in the sky" destroying her hometown, referring to the red bottom of the Invincible.

The Invincible can also capture eidolons, and at one time is hijacked by Kuja, but after the events on Terra, Zidane and company steal it and it becomes the party's airship for disc 4.

Prima Vista[]

Ff9 theatre ship

Prima Vista approaching Alexandria Castle.

The M.S. Prima Vista is a luxury liner with a theater used by the Tantalus Theater Troupe. It measures 8235 tonnes and has a guest capacity of 288. It runs off a "veil energy propulsion system" (i.e. a Mist-powered engine) and was built in Zebolt Shipyards. The Prima Vista is registered in Lindblum and acts as the thieves' mobile base of operations. The theater ship's stage is used to perform I Want to be Your Canary.

Red Rose[]

The Red Rose.

The Red Rose is Queen Brahne's personal airship and is named after her favorite flower. She uses the Red Rose to travel to the various sites of conquest during her bid for world dominion. After the whole world is flooded in Mist Beatrix commandeers the ship to the Second Battle of the Iifa Tree.

Viltgance[]

Concept artwork of the Viltgance.

The Viltgance is a Lindblum battleship briefly seen when entering Lindblum for the first time after escaping through South Gate. It also appears during the Battle of the Iifa Tree when the party enters Memoria.

Marsha, a girl in Lindblum, mentions that her father rides on an airship called the Viltgance.

The Fenrir is a small airship piloted first by Zorn and Thorn, then later Black Waltz 3 while in pursuit of Zidane's group. It is shot out of the sky by Vivi during the approach to Lindblum and not seen again.

Lindblum freighters[]

Seen flying around Lindblum are many small commercial airships used to ferry freight and people around the city and the Mist Continent. The airships fly in the sky while the party is on the world map. There are three main types.

Ark[]

Ark is an eidolon that takes the form of an airship at the begining of its summon, then it is able to transform into a giant robot.

Final Fantasy X[]

FFX-airship

The Fahrenheit.

The only airship is the Fahrenheit, though the player cannot actually fly it around Spira, instead it is used more for quick transportation from one location to another.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Celsius 1

The Celsius.

The group of sphere hunters known as the Gullwings, consisting of Yuna, Rikku, Paine, Brother, Shinra, Buddy and the Hypello known simply as Barkeep, use the airship Celsius as a headquarters as well as a means of transportation.

It was named Celsius by Brother to spite his father, Cid, with whom Brother had had a falling out. The "joke" being that Celsius and Fahrenheit, the latter of which is the name of Cid's airship from Final Fantasy X, are two different ways of measuring temperatures.

Final Fantasy XI[]

An airship.

Airships can be accessed to allow players to travel much more swiftly over the large open world of Vana'diel. They provide travel between the Grand Duchy of Jeuno and ports in the Republic of Bastok, the Federation of Windurst, the Kingdom of San d'Oria, and the village of Kazham. The player must either complete the Rank 5 mission or pay to obtain a pass in order to be able to utilize them.

A specific airship appears in later Chains of Promathia missions, transporting story characters between Tavnazian Safehold and Al'Taieu. The player can optionally name this airship by completing a sidequest.

Final Fantasy XII[]

There is a large variety of airships, which come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and run off a combination of magick and electricity. History recorded that airships were first invented by the moogles. The discovery of Bhujerba by House Ondore has been credited to one of the first airship expeditions.

A variety of magicite called "skystone" is used to power the airships. Airships in Ivalice run on glossair rings, in which fuel produced from the Mist within Skystones runs through glossair engines. These shiny rings of blue can be seen in many airborne vehicles, from the small air cabs in the streets of Archades to the large Archadian military fleets invading the skies.

There are certain areas known as Jagds that standard airships cannot access because of the large amount of Mist in the air and the rich amount of magicite in Jagd soil. By using nethicite, airships are able to fly over Jagd territory.

Most airships are named after summons in previous games.

Strahl[]

The Strahl.

The Strahl is the main airship for the party. It is owned by the party members Balthier and Fran. Unlike previous games, the Strahl cannot be boarded. Instead, boarding the Strahl will instantly bring up the world map and a list of destinations that can be traveled to.

Originally a new prototype ship for the Archadian Empire, its unique folding-wing design proved to be too expensive. As such, the ship was going to be scrapped. However, while Balthier was escaping from Archades, he stole the Strahl. As shown when being chased by Archadians, Balthier does not use any weapons on the Strahl, even though it was a prototype fighter airship and as such, should be equipped with something.

The Strahl has since been upgraded so much, it no longer resembles its original design. New features include invisibility and a skystone that allows it to travel over Jagd.

Dalmascan Ships[]

12b-durga

The only instance the player is shown any Dalmascan airships is the opening FMV, with the Durga, which is a carrier ship powered by two glossair engines. The seal of the Kingdom of Dalmasca is painted on the side.

Archadian Ships[]

Alexander[]
Ffxii alexander 2

This airship shares its name with the recurring summon, Alexander. The Alexander is the flagship of the 12th Fleet of the Archadian Imperial Army and is commanded by Judge Zargabaath. It is classified as a No. 1 Heavy Carrier class airship. It is the second largest Airship in the game after the Bahamut.

Atomos[]
For the mark of the same name, see Atomos (Final Fantasy XII).
FFXIIAtomosAirship

An Atomos? All skiff, no ship. Hardly fit for a leading man.

Balthier upon escaping the Dreadnought Leviathan

Sharing its name with the recurring boss and summon, Atomos, the Atomos is a class of carrier ship, meant to transport people quickly. It is similar to Pandaemonium, though it is painted in a white hue.

Bahamut[]

This airship shares its name with the recurring summon, Bahamut. A Sky Fortress under the command of Vayne Solidor, it is powered by a great amount of Mist, taken from the Sun-Cryst. Even when not at full power, its Mist Cannon is powerful enough to blow entire airships out of the sky in one shot. Built by the Archadian Empire, Bahamut serves as a gigantic base for the Archadian military.

At the end of the game it is heavily damaged and crash lands, narrowly missing the city of Rabanastre. It crashes just outside of the city, and embeds itself in the ground. In the epilogue, it is shown to have been covered with plant-life, and a small lake had been formed at the base.

Carbuncle[]
Carbuncle-FFXII

This airship shares its name with the recurring summon, Carbuncle. It was also the ship Vossler used to transport the party to Shiva. Note the red jewel on the front of the ship, gems similar to this are found on the creature Carbuncle in all of its appearances.

Catoblepas[]
XIICatoblepasAirship

This airship shares its name with the recurring enemy and summon Catoblepas. Originally the Destroyer-class airship of the 12th fleet, it has been a standard to include Catoblepas in every fleet.

Ifrit[]
FFXII-Ifrit Artwork

This airship shares its name with the recurring summon, Ifrit. It was one of these types of ships that stopped the resistance from invading the Royal Palace of Rabanastre while Vayne Solidor was visiting. Part of the 8th fleet, it can be assumed they sunk with the Leviathan.

Leviathan[]

This airship shares its name with the recurring summon, Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the 8th Fleet of the Archadian Imperial Army and is commanded by Judge Ghis. It is classified as a No. 1 Dreadnought class airship. It was fitted with a special type of skystone, able to resist the effects of the Jagd, which usually disables the use of airships. It was destroyed in an explosion caused by the Dawn Shard, when Judge Ghis attempted to test the shard's power by through the use of the airship's own energy source.

A second ship by the same name is built sometime after the game's conclusion. Like the first it was built by the empire, but is owned by Dalmasca and used as Ashe's flagship. It appears in Revenant Wings.

Odin[]

This airship shares its name with the recurring summon, Odin. It is part of the Imperial 1st Fleet.

Pandaemonium[]
FFXIIPandaemoniumAirship

This airship shares its name with a Mark in Final Fantasy XII, two locations and a summon in Final Fantasy VIII, Pandemona. The Pandaemonium is a carrier ship similar to Atomos, only differs in its hue which is black.

Remora[]
Remora

This airship shares its name with the Final Fantasy V, Remora. Unlike the other airships, the Remora is a class of light fighter. Several Remora are seen, including ones codenamed Antlion and Tonberry. Its official name is the Draklor CB56 Remora Fighter.

Shiva[]
Final-fantasy-12-08a

The Imperial airship Shiva.

This Light Cruiser-class airship shares her name with the recurring summon, Shiva. Part of the original 8th fleet, she was crippled in the explosion caused by the Dawn Shard, the only ship shown to not have been outright torn apart. Briefly seen limping away from the disaster, with apparent heavy damage. It is unknown what became of her.

Valfarre[]
XII Valefor

This airship possibly shares its name with the Final Fantasy X aeon, Valefor. An improved light fighter, the Valfarre is seen directly after the party leaves the Tomb of Raithwall, and during the battle between the Resistance and Archadia. Its official name is the Draklor CB58 Valfarre Fighter. It is referred to as "Valefor" on the Collector's Edition bonus disc and in the official artwork book.

Resistance Ships[]

Garland[]
Garland FFXII

The Garland.

This airship shares its name with two antagonists of the Final Fantasy series. Garland from the original Final Fantasy and Garland from Final Fantasy IX. The flagship of the Resistance, it is under the command of Marquis Ondore.

Galuf-Val[]

This airship shares its name with the character of Final Fantasy V, Galuf and his home, Val Castle. It was shot down during the battle between the Resistance and Archadia.

Queen Hilda[]
XIIQueenHilda

This airship shares its name with one of the characters of Final Fantasy II, Princess Hilda, as well as Hildagarde Fabool in Final Fantasy IX. This cruiser-class provides support and defense for the Resistance airship fleet against Archadia.

Xezat Surgate[]
XIIXezatSurgate

This airship shares its name with one of the characters of Final Fantasy V, Xezat Matias Surgate. It was designed as an aircraft carrier, and the main force of the Resistance with many of these class, similar to how the Archadians use many Ifrits.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Galbana-ffxiirw

Vaan pilots an airship which acts as a base for his party. Even though it is called the Galbana, the player may call it whatever they like.

It also contains a sky saloon created by Tomaj where Vaan can buy and sell raw materials, craft weapons, and sell items.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Fifth ark airship

Concept art of an unnamed airship the party pilots away from Fifth Ark.

Cid Raines and his Sanctum Guardian Corps command an airship called Lindblum (リンドブルム, Rindoburumu?), named for the city of Lindblum in Final Fantasy IX. Another is the Palamecia of the Sanctum Skyfleet, where the protagonists battle Barthandelus. Many other airships are shown in the game of varying designs and sizes, and the party flies small, unnamed airships for brief periods throughout the game.

However, they do not have permanent access to any single airship for personal travel, yet the main airship that serves the purpose of transporting the main characters is Menrva, Barthandelus's servant who transforms into an airship to guide the group to specific places in the story.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

The party pursues and fights Caius Ballad on an airship near the end of the story. This unnamed airship is piloted by Sazh Katzroy. The main body owning airships appears to be the Academy; their airships defeat Atlas's first form in Bresha Ruins 5 AF, and much later, in Academia 400 AF. The main personal method of transport appears to be a type of flying car.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Agrius[]

Concept Art of Agrius.

The opening CG of the game shows the Battle of Silvertear Skies between a fleet of Garlean Empire magitek airships including the XIVth legions flagship Agrius against a swarm of wyverns led by the Father of Dragons, Midgardsormr. The mothership is encircled and crushed by the dragon, crashing in the Mor Dhona region. The wreckage of the airship can be seen by the player still tangled in the great dragon's corpse when visiting the region, and was eventually made into a dungeon.

Blackjack[]

The personal airship of Highwind Skyways chairman Tatabaru. Similar in design to the Tiny Bronco (see below) and other transport airships, it is distinguished by its sleek black paint on the hull.

Bonanza[]

The private airship of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, its construction was overseen by Tataru Taru. Although having a priori a size comparable to a Bronco-type airship the Bonanza nevertheless has a totally new design.

Dalriada[]

FFXIV IVth Airships

The Dalriada.

The flagship of the IVth Imperial Legion commanded by Noah van Gabranth. It resembles the Ifrit from Final Fantasy XII and has a very different design from the rest of the imperial airship, especially because it does not seem to use the Magitek wings that all other imperial airship use. The Dalriada was the ship that led the imperial destruction of Rabanastre as relation against Dalmascan rebels. At the conclusion of the fighting at Zadnor, the Dalriada was destroyed by the Diablo Armament.

Dezul Qualan[]

An experimental hybrid airship in development by the Ehcatl Nine under the visionary Sezul Totoloc. Its design combines traditional Ixali ballooncraft with magitek-based airship technology used by Highwind Skyways. The Ixali Beast-Tribe quests focuses around the construction of the prototype airship.

Enterprise[]

Concept art of The Enterprise.

The prized airship of Cid Garlond, it is a custom built vessel unmatched in speed by the entire fleet of Garlemald. Cid took this ship with him when he defected from the Empire. This ship is used in many quests to ferry the player characters to dungeons by Cid himself. The Enterprise was later upgraded into the Enterprise Excelsior, incorporating an experimental aetheric convergence device. Players can also use the Enterprise design for their company airship.

Gration[]

A new dreadnaught created by Garlemald following the succession of Varis zos Galvus. It was used demonstrated by the VIth Imperial Legion during their search for Azys Lla. Forced to remain moored at the Gamma Quadrant of Azys Lla due to its engines being frozen with aetheric ice after a battle with the primal Shiva.

Ia'sar[]

The Ia'sar is the airship of Ba'Gamnan and his crew. It means "tornado" in Dalmascan. After Ba'Gamnan's death, his crew joined the Dalmascan resistance group Lente's Tears and the airship came with them.

Manacutters[]

Experimental single-seat aircraft developed by Garlond Ironworks, used by the Warrior of Light and Estinien Wyrmblood to infiltrate the Aery. Manacutters are one of the few airships available to players as mounts.

Prima Vista[]

FFXIV Prima Vista

The Prima Vista.

The mobile theater of the Majestic Imperial Theater Company.

Ragnarok[]

An airship capable of space travel, originally constructed using Allagan and ancient technology by Sharlayan and the Loporrits to evacuate the planet's citizens to the moon. It was reconfigured through the efforts of people across the Three Great Continents to instead reach the edge of the universe and defeat the source of the Final Days.

Tiny Bronco[]

Airship Gridania

A Highwind Skyways Bronco-type airship leaving Gridania.

An airship maintained by Garlond Ironworks engineers Biggs and Wedge, it is shot down by Imperial Mercenaries who are out for the bounty on the engineers heads. The Tiny Bronco is the basis for the common Bronco-type airships seen throughout Eorzea, including Archibishop Thordan's personal airship, the Soleil, and those used for commercial flights by Highwind Skyways. Players can also use the Bronco design for their company airship.

The Void Ark[]

A vessel created by the Fifth Astral Era city of magic, Mhach, in an attempt to escape the great flood of the Sixth Calamity. Unlike conventional airships, it is powered by thousands of voidsent sealed within coffins aboard the ark.

Wind-up Airship[]

Wind-up airship1

Wind-up Airship is a toy airship that appears as a minion. It is awarded to adventurers for serving as an envoy on behalf of the city-state leadership.

Final Fantasy XV[]

Imperial invasion of Altissia in FFXV Episode Ignis

Various types of imperial aircraft.

The ancient civilization of Solheim used airships,[1] and airship technology thus possibly originates from Solheim. In the modern era, Niflheim uses the technology to transport its troops and magitek armor, and has largely replaced its seafaring ships in favor of air transport.[2] From Chapter 2 onwards, Niflheim's assault craft scour the lands and drop soldiers near the player party to initiate a battle. Aranea Highwind's aircraft is red rather than black.

Assault craft are not usually used for direct warfare, although in Chapter 11 they are shown to have mounted machine guns. Imperial dreadnoughts, meanwhile, have massive magitek cannons as seen in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. Niflheim uses at least three varieties of airship: the assault craft, the box-shaped vehicles that directly transport troops; the dreadnoughts with a large thin stern accompanied by boxed-shaped protrusions on each side; and airships that resemble a manta ray in shape, which Noctis Lucis Caelum and his party upon first seeing it refer to as a "flying fortress".

The player party's car, the Regalia, can transform into a flying form and become the party's airship. The player can obtain the flying Regalia in Chapter 15 as an additional challenge, called Regalia Type-F. The player can maneuver it around the skies of Eos, but landing it can be tricky. The flying car is needed to reach Pitioss Ruins.

Zegnautus Keep is an imperial fortress that can fly, and thus could be considered another kind of airship.

Final Fantasy XVI[]

Airships are ancient technology; as legend has it, the Fallen used to live on the bellies of flying magitek ships on the skies of Valisthea. In modern day, the ancient ruins found all around the landscape are called "airships" and are sometimes used for making settlements, such as Lostwing in Sanbreque, and Cid's and Clive's hideaways, the latter being the relic of the ancient airship Invincible. If the player buys enough pints at Maeve's tavern, she will regale a story of how she believes the Fallen airships were downed by dragons.

Midadol Telamon wants to recreate the technology of flying ships and build one. She has Clive help her gathering parts, but when her miniature airship does not soar, she becomes deflated. She decides to bury her airship plans across the land as a treasure hunt for future engineers to uncover and lets Clive keep the miniature airship for his Wall of Memories. Mid's airship resembles the classic airships from the Final Fantasy series, such as from the first three games, but is not a direct recreation of any specific airship. Mid's airship is glimpsed in an Active Time Lore background in the "Engineering" entry for Mysteries of the Realm Engineering in Active Time Lore from FFXVI before she actually finishes building it if the player finishes the sidequest "On Balance".

A third airship carried the Warriors of Spiritus at various points in Act 1. Its fate is not known. A fourth airship appears at the conclusion of Act 3, Ch. 2, Pt. 2, based on the events of Darill's Tomb.

With this in mind, several characters have retained their roles as airship pilots: Setzer, Cid, Vaan, Balthier, and Sazh can all be observed boasting of their prowess; and a recurring event involves these characters arguing over who among them will take the helm.
