The Esper Elder is a minor character in Final Fantasy VI. The leader of the espers, he is one of the oldest and wisest espers alive, and is implied to be friends with Maduin, the gatekeeper of the Esper World.

He cannot be obtained as a magicite so he can't be summoned by the player. From the look of his abilities, he could have been either a wind-elemental summon or a support summon.

ProfileEdit

AppearanceEdit

Esper Elder is one of two espers to have a unique esper field sprite. He dresses in a full blue robe and has white beard, dark skin or fur, and gray hair or mane. He appears to have horns.

PersonalityEdit

Esper Elder is loyal to the esper populace and puts his people's needs above his own.

AbilitiesEdit

The Elder can create a tempest to sweep all invaders out of the Esper World, and seal the gate with a magic barrier. Even among espers, the power to create a magical seal is limited to a single bloodline, and he's the last of that line. Due to his old age, there's a chance he might not survive casting the barrier. Without the Esper Elder, both the humans and espers will never be able to open the gate again.

StoryEdit

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

The Elder allowed Madeline to remain with her baby daughter Terra who was conceived by Maduin and Madeline. When the Gestahlian Empire invaded the esper world, the Elder spoke to Maduin about raising a magic barrier to cast them out. Maduin said that in the Elder's old age, the effort could kill him. Nevertheless, as he was the only esper able to do so, the Elder sealed the gate, protecting the Esper World for a short while. He presumably died in the effort, as Maduin predicted.

EtymologyEdit

In fiction, an esper (stylized as ESPer) is an individual capable of telepathy and other similar paranormal abilities. The term was apparently coined in this sense by Alfred Bester in his 1950 short story "Oddy and Id" and is derived from the abbreviation ESP for extrasensory perception.
