Final Fantasy 6 - Shadow Leaves your one-man party bug demo

The empty party glitch in Final Fantasy VI occurs when the player ends up having no members in their party, making the game unplayable. This can only occur after the Battle for the Frozen Esper, but before the Opera House event. During this part of the game, if Shadow is in the party, and the group enters Narshe, he will automatically leave the party. He will do so even if he is the only party member, resulting in this glitch. Though the glitch is straightforward to trigger, one is unlikely to encounter it during a normal playthrough because it requires the player to ignore the game's narrative.

After Terra transforms into an esper and flies away to the west, the player is expected to bring a party of three or four characters to Kohlingen and search for her in the western part of the continent; the player would typically desire a party of four, but might bring three characters if they intend to recruit Shadow. If the player instead takes a party of only Gau and recruits Shadow in Kohlingen, the glitch can be triggered as follows: using Figaro Castle to return to the east, walking through South Figaro Cave and Mt. Kolts to the Returner Hideout, taking a raft to the Doma region, walking through the Phantom Forest and going over Baren Falls to the Veldt, and having Gau use Leap on an enemy. Without reclaiming Gau, Shadow should take the Serpent Trench to Nikeah and a ferry to South Figaro, then walk back through Figaro Cave and into Narshe. Shadow leaves the party, which is now empty. This will lock up the game and leave the player unable to do anything.

There is a bugfix patch that players can use to fix this on the SNES version (it is listed as "Shadow Leaves One-Man Party event bugfix" on that page).
