Earl Tyrant (タイラント伯爵, Tairanto hakushaku) is the main antagonist of Final Fantasy: Unlimited. He appears as a spoiled young monarch, surrounded by his followers on his throne in the floating fortress of Gaudium. Though he acts in a child-like manner, he is the primary avatar of Chaos itself.

Earl Tyrant's goal is to sit on the seat of God, and he hopes to do so by obtaining all the pieces of Omega and recombine it into one. His Lords of Gaudium are sent to search for the Omega crystals, pieces of Omega which had been separated.

At the course of the story, Earl Tyrant is constantly fed by unusual pastries, which is revealed to have been prepared by Ai and Yu's parents and is made of emotions such as fear and anger. Earl Tyrant is revealed to be a human representation of Chaos, and with the help of Oscha, had planned all the troubles and tribulations faced by the protagonists so that they generate all the terror, sadness, and rage which becomes his meal.

At the end of the anime, Earl Tyrant had his hold on Clear, the heart of Omega, as other pieces of Omega had been destroyed, and he was the only piece left. Joe and Marie explain that the Earl plans to absorb Clear and obtain Omega's destructive power. Furthermore, the Earl sees that Yu and Ai are byproducts of Chaos that came into being twelve years ago, deciding to merge with them as Oscha saw them as matured enough.

When all his plans are foiled by the protagonists, he transforms into Chaos Tyrant, a winged dark entity. Chaos Tyrant was defeated when it got possessed by Makenshi's soul, turning into a parody of the Sword Dragon called Chaos Sword Dragon. Kaze turned himself into Soil and was summoned by Lisa as a Gun Dragon. Enacting their battle twelve years ago, but in reversed roles, the two summons then destroyed each other, destroying the Earl and damaging Gaudium.
